I've spent months testing underwear for hiking and backpacking and in this video I'll reveal my top 5 favorites! We don't talk much about underwear for hiking and backpacking, but we really should. The layer closest to your skin is just as important as any other! Chafing, bunching and generally uncomfortable underwear can absolutely ruin a trip, and the wrong materials can even be unhygienic. In this video I'll cover the 5 best pairs of hiking underwear I've personally tried, as well as declare a best overall winner! Spoiler alert: my all-time favorite underwear on this list is also the CHEAPEST! 👀

I love my Icebreaker Sprite Merino wool underwear, because I don’t like the idea of wearing plasticky nylon or polyester right up against my bits. They’re breathable, moisture-wicking, don’t get stinky after a long sweaty hike, and dry relatively quickly compared to cotton or Modal. The only thing I’m sad about is that they’re not the most durable, which sucks because they’re also not cheap. Two years after purchase, they were already threadbare. I’m still rocking my hole-y skivvies four years later, I don’t even care. It’s the nature of the Merino beast.

Yes! PLEASE do a bra video. As a 36 DD girl, don't forget about us busty babes! Most "lightweight" bras don't work for us as if we get one big enough for the tatas, the band is so big, it doesn't actually support us. I tend to pack the craziest, armor like sports bras for backpacking as I can get them in traditional sizing as opposed to S-M-L. Not only do they take up so much room in my pack, they don't breathe at all. If you can find the holy grail, that would make my year!

I really like the Duluth Trading Armachillo breifs for summer. They are wicking, quick drying, super lightweight, and feel cool on the body. It's really great for hot and humid days. They're high-rise briefs and stay put. They make boxers in the same material, too. And they go up to a 3x in their sizing.

I second the Armachillos. They are the only underwear I have in my drawer now. I absolutely hate the fact that I pay $20-25 (depending on sales) for a single pair of underwear, but I can't go back now.

This. After EVERY hiking trip it's like a week recovery for my skin. I need major support (e) that fits my 30 ribcage. Practically impossible, but it would be so nice to find something that doesn't chafe, is adjustable and breathes, yet provides support. I'm not sure it exists. I don't think support and breathability work together. Close but not quite.

Love, love, love that you included sizing! Thank you! I am excited to try the REI undies. I have been in love with Duluth buck naked and dang soft undies for a hot minute. They have pigs, fish, skulls, flowers, etc. :), have size xs-3x and different styles briefs, boxers, hipsters, etc.. So I am able to get a variety, but I'm really excited to have another option. I live closer to an REI than a Duluth. I mean I know the internet, but sometimes I need something at the last minute :)

As someone who has hiked with many pair of uncomfortable underwear, this is much appreciated. I wish you had covered how the fabric does in the cold, though. Some fabrics, I found, get kind of stiff when it gets below 20 degrees F. You can warm them by wearing, of course, but getting them on is just a little bit more trouble that I wanted. But I actually wound up here in the comments to remind you that you hinted at a hiking sports bra episode and, well, it's been 7 months and I don't see that you've posted one. Since I've also hiked with many an uncomfortable bra, I'm eagerly awaiting the results of your research. Thanks, gosh darn it!

As another commenter said--surprised not to see any merino wool options in the mix! Ridge Merino makes my all-time favorite. Their boyshorts have enough coverage that I use them to swim on waterfall hikes, and the merino wool is super soft, super quick drying, and never, I mean never ever, develops any odor. Their prices are in the middle/lower end of the range you showed here.

I haven’t tried Ridge!! I didn’t like any of the merino undies I tried - they all felt itchy and the waist band cut into me under my pack. But I think I’ll give the Ridge Boyshorts a try!

My go to for backpacking multiple days has been the Speedo shorts with liner, and Nike running shorts with liner. These are quick drying and pretty durable on multiple washes. No longer use separate underwear. I'm a heavyset guy and this works out for me.

As someone who’s been wearing synthetic material underwear like UnderArmour since about 2005, I can tell you that the increased cost ($20-25 for a single pair vs a Walmart 6 pack of Hanes for $8) is more than worth it for durability, comfort, moisture wicking, lack of bunching/rolling up, etc. Being a guy, I don’t care about bright fancy colors and patterns, I prefer black, dark grays, olive drab, etc, but they do tend to be fairly plain styles.

I love REI's active underwear line!! I wish they still made the active briefs in all the fun colors being produced for the bikinis and hipsters. I also just started using the REI active bralette for hiking. As someone with a small chest, I loved it so much I bought it in multiple colors!! Feels like I'm wearing nothing. First off I love this video. Thank you so much for talking about this. No one ever talks about underwear and yet it is an important piece of clothing. I've had to go through a journey of finding the best one myself and landed with the Patagonia Women's Active Briefs. They are full coverage and not hipster style at all so they stay on your boots even when you bend over. I tried the REI ones and they tore after a couple uses. Dunno if I just got a bad batch or I got a big booty but I decided that the Patagonias were the ones for me 😊

As an REI employee of 8 years, I also have some feels. I looovvveeee my rei active hipsters , BUT after maybe a year or so the seams started to peel apart. It could’ve been how I washed them, but I was not stoked that they delaminated at the seams. Also, we had a neon yellow color at one point! But love the suggestion of prints!

Hi! I work at REI right now, and the weird thing about the rei underwear (bc I have tried a few styles of backpacking underwear myself) is that I have one pair that has held up beautifully and I really like it, but then I have another pair that fell apart within 2 weeks of having them. Like the seams just unraveled… I was too embarrassed to bring the underwear to work to exchange them to see if it’s just a dud pair, so I just have these unraveling underwear now haha but that’s my only complaint. Seems like a quality control issue to me! But thank you so much for doing this review!! It is a great topic to cover and I really appreciate you covering it for us :)

I have a very specific...eczema related...skin issue...that essentially eliminates all non-cotton underwear from my life, so none of these make the cut for me... *Sigh* It makes hiking/backpacking very difficult because we all know how much of a bummer cotton is for sweating and activity and trying to stay dry. It does just mean that I take 2-3 pairs of cotton undies per day I'm out, I switch out throughout the day and always before bed, and just hope for them to dry before I need them again. The things that touch your skin are as important as any gear you bring on your hikes. Socks, underwear. I can't count the number of times wedgies/chafing has hurt more at the end of a hike than my feet or muscles. That is until I found Patagonia barely hipsters, and I swear by them now... and not just for hiking. I love that they're seamless because I have issues with literally any seams or edges chafing like crazy. Going to grab a pair of REIs and try them out too!

YES. We talk so much about the importance of layers, but none of that matters if we aren’t paying attention to the next-to-sensitive-skin stuff! I agree the Patagonia Hipsters are so rad. I have a couple pairs of the REI Active undies and really like them, although finding them on clearance was the best part! Duluth Trading Co makes some very nice underwear also, with sizing that doesn't feel like body shaming (looking at you, ExOfficio).

Plain drab colors I like best when hiking. Less attention on me when it's time for a "bathroom break." I like more fun colors day to day but have come to prefer when the attention isn't on me when I'm peeing. 😅

Wonder if you tried Exofficio, specifically the give-n-go 2.0. I use them all the time and they're so great I'm swapping out my normal underwear now. Same with the hiking bras.

I love the icebreaker wool briefs, the fit is great & they're super durable but they run small though. I hatee the seams on the exofficio's, the placement is awful

Those Kula cloth Pyka pants look really cool. The dollar conversion and shipping to Canada might make them waaaaay too expensive for me, tho! I wear Forclaz brand merino wool from Decathlon. I think they were $15, and I really like them. I've had them a couple of years, and they're still good!

In the boys category Ex Officio Give and Go, long lasting, quick drying, great wicking zero odor and super comfort, Down side, $30. Cheap skate almost so good I don't notice option, the 32 Degree Active Cool Boxer Brief. $26 for a six pack at COSTCO. These have replaced all the other drawers in my drawer. Please, you totally need to add that Smokey Bear Butt Be Chafin Sticker on the store.

I got gifted Thinx period underwear and I don’t love them. I use and LOVE Saalt’s menstrual cup and didn’t know they sold period underwear too. I’ll def try them out!

Glad you did this video, I have been waiting more than a year, but(t).... After your "Under and Out(side) video part2 on sport bras, i would appreciate an episode on guy's backpacking underwear. My personal favorite is Ex Officio, which has multiple offerings in both color and "junk mgmt", and they have t-shirts that are extra breathable. Super quick drying: one needs only two sets; wear one set while wash/dry other set. Dries in a couple of hours on a warm day. And they can be purchased at "The store of 3 letters" Thanks for all you (and your producer) do! Thanks
