2:40 Virtual Desktop is a hard pass for me. All these years later, I basically have two options. Let VD display 1920x1080 on my desktop (which is 5120x1440, so the image is unusably stretched in passthrough) OR I can flip the option to fit my 5120x1440 monitor into a 1920x1080 letterbox. Giving me an amazing resolution of... *_1920_* x _*520*_. also unusable. This is the same issue I had with the old ultrawide several years ago, which was "only" 3840x1080... "Showing Meta and Valve How To Do It"... Pft. QuestLink, Airlink, and SteamVR have *always* shown my desktop at the appropriate 1:1 scale.

well... I will have a closer look at Bigscreen Beyond headset... already very expensive ... at least for me ... but I love the idea to make headsets smaller and easier to wear. XR4 for sure is a great great headset for VR enthusiast .. like you? :) but way toooo expensive for normal Vr market and yeah... again "big" and far away from the great idea behind bigscreen beyond making a small wearable headset with great specs too

People may look at these hyper expensive headsets and think “ok cool but i can’t afford that right now” and that’s just the thing. The tech in those headsets may be expensive now, but they’re a glimpse into the future of what VR can bring as that tech trickles its way down into cheaper headsets as tech innovation always does. In this current moment, VR tech is the worst it’s ever going to be, and that’s especially exciting. The future holds a world of possibility for VR.

The VR-3 was the epitome of VR headsets in 2020, and it cost $3,195. Three years later, the Aero, which is just flat out *better* as well as easier to use than the VR-3, goes on sale for $890? If the trend continues, the XR-4 is $3,995 right now. In late 2026, the successor to the aero should be better than the XR-4, easier to use than the XR-4, and go on sale for $1,090 down from $1,190! I know things don’t pan out linearly like that usually, but it gives a ballpark of where things could be! Also by then, Meta will probably be releasing the Quest 4 (likely that year even), which *will* be a competitor to that despite likely being priced substantially lower just due to how well of an all rounder it will be.

Glad to see Varjo coming out with a banger headset. Of all the headset makers, they were the ones poised to compete directly with Apple's Vision Pro. And considering the amount and quality of product Apple can turn out, they were in a somewhat dire position. It's nice seeing them still able to push hardware boundaries and make it more accessible. Now all we need is an Aero 2.

I think it's kinda funny how the VRChat credits now make it even more like the Oasis than it was before. Obviously the Oasis was more of an MMORPG that turned into a MMORPG hybrid with social experiences and productivity in addition to other things, but VRChat is really close to that now and it's sort of insane and cool.

I remember my first experience with actual vr. It was a while ago at gadget show live, and we were walking around the convention area. One of the booths had vr rings to try where you held onto a guard rail, wore some special shoes, and you could walk around a famous painting. The shoes had no grip so you literally couldnt stand with them, but against being told not to, i let go of the ring to try and… tried to grab something that wasnt really there. I smacked my head on the rail and everyone was trying to make sure I was okay, but I was just fascinated by the idea of a world that didnt really exist

In regards to the VRC changes, I just hope the map creators don't get too greedy, I don't think all of them will but some will likely get carried away I imagine. I'm glad it's here but I'm just cautiously optimistic.

​@milannesic5718 that's fine. The consumer market has only really just started to take off. We started at NES and are now at PS5 and that only took like 3 decades. The quest 3 in standalone mode is fairly strong for what it is, nearly surpassing the xbox 360 in quality after only 3 years after the quest 2. All the QoL gripes (FoV, optic stacks, and power draw) get fixed over time.

Yep I'm planning to use the quest 3 to finally be able to work on my patent properly. I can't draw for shit which means I can't properly show how it works despite having my proof of concept but with the 3D art apps in the quest 3 I can finally do that. I only wish I'd gotten it months ago but I didn't realize it was an option. The hell I probably could do it with the quest 2 but I was wholy uninterested in virtual reality. I just didn't realize that it was for more than just gaming at the time I didn't think they'd come that far.

Just got word that it only has DP1.4, so it's restricted to 30PPD unless the game specifically implements Varjos SDK (which is currently zero games). So the Aero actually has higher PPD for consumer use cases, albeit lower FOV. Really a headscratcher that they went with DP1.4.

Yeah still 1.4. I asked them about it and apparently hey did some interesting stuff to stay right under the bandwidth with the eye tracking. The PPD on the pupil gaze is still 51PPD (according to them) with drastic fall off outside of the focus range.

@@ThrillSeekerVR That's true but only with SDK implementation so unfortunately for the consumer experience of Steam VR gaming, we will be stuck st 30PPD (lower than Aero due to the larger FOV). It will still be amazing but much less appealing for the mad cost but does make the Aero still an appealing purchase at a good price now (although come on... Bigscreen beyond is what you'd really go for now haha).

For the creator economy, sure the creators may get 50% of the split, but Gumroad only takes 10% of what avatar and world creators make, not to mention Patreon takes 25 cents on direct deposit payout and 1% payout fee for PayPal on top of an at most a 12% cut for membership fees. Sure, it's nice for people to support their favorite creators in game, however, the creators earn more still through outside platforms. Hell, I think some creators even just have a donation thing so they get 100% of donations anyways, so thinking about it from a purely monetary perspective, it makes sense to support creators through the means by which we are already doing so. VRChat wants to capitalize off of how convenient it will be paying for in-game subscriptions.

Actually, Apple is pushing the prices down. The XR-3 costs $7000 plus a subscription, needs stations for tracking and isn't a standalone device. The Vision offers higher resolution and eye-tracking navigation that is yet to be seen in the industry. And now Varjo launches the XR-4 cutting almost half the price with no subscription.

thats nothing new. apple has always made weaker hardware thats priced higher. they excell at everything else. software and marketting. Thats why the iphone is so successful despite compettitors having better and cheaper hardware. its only till a few years ago that apple actually has decent hardware in their stuff. the thing you forgot though is the apple headset is standalone. its made to be used standalone.

I have been RAVING about variable focus for years and it is literally the *only* feature I’ve genuinely really wanted from a new VR headset since the technology was announced by oculus like six years ago! I am so insanely happy that this is coming out and that it’s going to come down in price soon! I’ve been saying that people keep wishlisting things like increased resolution, wider fov, lighter weight, better audio, etc, but almost none of it matters compared to the ability to focus on objects and use your eyes normally! This is the missing link between Virtual Reality and Reality Reality!

I dislike the VRChat monetization. Don't get me wrong, I like the fact it's gonna be easier for creators to get paid, but I hate the implementation. It uses coins, which are designed like coins in pay-to-win mobile games. They're made so it's hard to judge how much something costs. You can also only buy them in packs, meaning you'll likely have some leftover after a purchase, meaning you'll want to buy more so they don't go to waste. Even if you can cash out a single coin, doing so makes you lose half it's value, thanks to the 50% cut. I know VRChat unfortunately can't get around the 50% cut, but they didn't have to make the value weird, they could've made 1 coin $0.01 USD, and they could've made it so you could buy individual coins! It just feels so scummy IMO, and I can this becoming another Roblox situation, since those exact concerns are issues people have with Robux.

Everything is perfect about the XR4, spatial audio, etc except for the missing MicroLED displays. Add this plus 8k res per eye so we get infinite contrast, less discernible screen-door effect, and near instantaneous response time then we are genuinely closer to total immersion capability.

I think adding monitization to vrchat will be a bsd thing. The game is already plauged by shady characters and half assed strip clubs. Adding real money directly into the game i believe will worsen these issues and create new ones like, paywalling features that have no reason to be paywalled, pollarize communities by those who donated and those who havent, and scams.

From a sentimental standpoint, I'm always happy with HTC hitting the mark. The issues are software side, so doesn't take a lot of optimism to foresee the compatibility issue being solved. I pour all of my reckless optimism in hoping that Sony will collab and work with HTC for support with PSVR2. I can imagine a PS5Pro having native integration for something like that. I'd love to try the XR Elite side by side with a XR4 to understand the difference

Steam Link and the Vive Ultimate trackers are the *big* things for me; I have a Quest 2 that I've been using as a PC headset via Virtual Desktop because most of my VR games are on my PC, but I often suffered from *huge* lag spikes; which in a game like say, Blade and Sorcery, allowed an attack I would've otherwise successfully blocked to *hit* me. I honestly think having to connect my Quest 2 to my PC in such a roundabout way might be the main problem there, and if Valves Steam Link *fixes* that problem, I'm honestly *down* for it because that's really the *big* reason my Quest 2 has been sitting collecting dust for so long. As for the Vive Ultimate trackers, I *really* can't wait until those things officially support *all* headsets; I've been wanting full body tracking for *ages* , not just for the boost in immersion, but also to make my VR sessions much more of a *workout* by engaging much *more* of my body. Blade and Sorcery's my *favorite* VR game, and being able to use more of my body to fight will *definitely* make fighting in it more of a workout.

I for one am really stoked about the VR Chat monetization because it means it could finally be the thing that drives ARTISTS onto the platform. I mean its not hard to imagine maybe some very famous DJs might see this as motivation to do virtual concerts in VR Chat where you need to pay 5 or 10 bucks to attend. I don't think it's unreasonable at all if it brings out famous artists that normally wouldn't care.

Waiting for Immersed Visor, which might come next year. As a visually impaired programmer, I'm looking for something that could replace my work monitors with all their issues. However, MR glasses might have their own issues. For example, my eyes find it difficult to adjust to Quest 3 even with prescription lenses, and I also notice some PWM-like flickering which causes a bit of an eyestrain. Not sure if Visor will be able to sort it all out. Also, zoom-in feature in passthrough is on my wishlist, but no idea who and how could implement that.

Please talk more about lens glare in VR headsets. Which headsets are better for avoiding lens glare and that kind of thing. The lens glare & god rays are the most annoying thing about my Valve Index & number one priority for an upgrade.

Hey I don't know if there is a certain place to put QOTF but ill put it here. Is it worth it to buy the big screen beyond if I already have an index ( I've had it for abt 1 year now) or should I wait till the index is "dying" to buy the beyond/ newer headset?

You've already got the base stations and controllers, so the Beyond definitely wouldn't hurt. If wireless hadn't come along and I had PCVR equipment and that kind of money, I'd buy a beyond. Comfort and visuals are top notch with nothing else coming close currently.

To me i feel like "Giant Chrome Quest 3" is the most menacing part of its design aesthetic. Looks like the face of an H/K drone from Terminator lol
