It can be easier, but it isn't always as transferable as AP credit, actually.

Yes, I actually found out that a lot of more selective colleges don't allow you to use the credit if you needed it to graduate high school, unlike AP courses where you're always using it for both.

I signed up for dual enrollment for honors chemistry in my sophomore year (I am now a junior). I still don’t know how it benefited me, or if it even did. Essentially, as long as I earned above a c in the class, I received college credits for a nearby college, but since the college curriculum for chemistry was already in accordance with my honors chemistry class, my dual enrollment process didn’t require taking an additional college class.

Definitely a better investment than AP classes. Current senior and will graduate in June later this year. Other than a few dollars of fees, it definitely saves you a lot of money and time compared to the classes your school may offer. From personal experience, professors are almost always available and glad to communicate with you on anything, plus your college might have free tutoring and tech help. Much more flexible. I took all asynch classes and have been given a lot of resources. You do need self discipline to complete hw and tests but other than that, what you put into your classes is going to be reflected in your final grade.

Concurrent enrollment is different. Concurrent enrollment is when your high school is partnered with a nearby college and offers a class with their curriculum at your school, allowing you to get credit for that course at the college. Dual enrollment is actually applying to the college and taking possibly all of your classes through the university, either online or on campus

I am a current Dual enrollment senior in high school. I would 100% recommend it for students staying at an in-state college. But, if you talk to the academic adviser your out of state college, they may accept some or all credits. For students who want to go out of state, AP may be a better investment but regardless, having dual enrollment classes in your course schedule show recruiters that you are able to handle college level classes as a high school student.

But now during Covid and currently attending full time college, my gpa couldn’t possibly be worse 😀👍 Edit: Credit transferability. I’ve been reading some of the above comments and just as long as you attend a state college the program was in or related to, you should be able to transfer most if not all of your courses over. Not sure for out of state though.

When I started university the fall after graduation, my credits all transferred because I chose to attend classes at a community college that have a direct transfer agreement with all universities in the state. I am now graduating a year before everyone I graduated High School with. I can say it was worth it and definitely recommend it. I'm a Homeschool Dual Credit enrolled student. It's my first semester and I have 3 left to finish the 'Core Requirements' which I have to do to graduate. I decided to take 2-8 week courses to take 2 more classes this semester. First, I took Health and Wellness did all of the fitness but little of the classwork, so I rushed everything before the last class day. Now, Im taking US History 2, which I regret, but I didn't realize 1 was required for University. It's really fast pace, so I'm trouble keeping up in long slides and quizzes and the upcoming 5 page essay, which I have been prioritizing. But the impact is less then the quizzes.

I decided to take my first dual class last year (US history). I got the credit with an A on both the high school and college sides. The thing is, I've found that it's a bigger work load and the credit isn't easily transferable. I took the class through UT Dallas and have found it hard for it to transfer to other big texas schools. However, I felt like doing good in a class was easier than doing good on one major ap test. It depends on yourself, if u are OK with a greater work load but have to pass a class overall, then go dual. If u want a lessened work load, and feel confident in passing a big, end of year test, then take ap. That's just in my experience tho

As a person in both dual credit and AP classes I hope my answer helps. Dual enrollment typically gives a more realistic approach to college classes than AP will but from my own experience, that’s about the only benefit besides the guaranteed credit for passing the class. AP Classes almost always are more in depth with the material. The face to face environment you receive in an AP class is almost always better than the dual credit alternative because of the higher stakes in AP. The teachers who teach AP are usually more willing to help you and teach you the material to make sure you understand it than dual enrollment teachers.

Not as heavy on credit since I’m pursing the music performance pathway. But since I’ve earned 51 and on track to earn 57 credit hours by the end of my high school time, it’s totally worth it. It’s a difficult transition at first, but if you have the ability to understand yourself and how you work best, then it can be a wonderful alternative to APs. My GPA has thanked me too! However, a couple difficult courses brought it down a bit unfortunately! If you are pursuing anything that isn’t extremely niche/technical like music performance, I’m 100% sure people should do it full time in high school!!!

Dual enrollment will definitely work out better for me. Assuming I can get into my state university, the credits should be pretty transferable, I don’t have to worry about the exam, and I’m able to get more college credits than if I took AP classes. The way my schools class schedule works, I can really only take a max of 3 AP classes a year. Also, I talked to my counselor about dual enrollment and he was really adamant about me not doing it for some reason. I explained to him why I wanted to and he said that I can obviously do what I want, but he was really pushing APs instead of dual enrollment. Maybe they get funding for every student in AP or something like that

@@zawadenam1234 Some areas/school districts offer early college programs that show students to graduate with a high school diploma and associates degree. Typically, you have to apply to rely on a lottery system to get in. Your area likely has a registry of schools or a website listing all of the schools in that area, so you can use that to determine if your region has an early college program. All you really need to get in at most schools is overall good middle school grades. My application did not ask about activities/awards, and entrance was only determined by family status and grades. Sometimes, early colleges may be called nontraditional or specialized high school, so watch out for the wording. Some programs have odd requirements and extended periods of study. Mine has a five year program, while many others are still completed in four years. Some schools allow you to apply as a sophomore or to transfer into the school under special circumstances. Contact the school's administration to learn more about their individual policies.

I’m taking dual enrollment calculus 1 and 2 instead of ap Calc AB/BC. It’s on campus so it functions the same as a normal class, but I’m getting college credit and experience with college math style of learning. Also, I can still take the ap test for more transferable credit. Definitely worth it!

Is there a definite winner in AP or IB? Like which is better

My school has more dual enrollment than APs available. What would you rate 20+ dual enrollment courses and 12 APs?

I took both AP and dual enrollment classes, and here’s what I think: Dual enrollment is often harder than AP classes Most of the time you do not get college credit through Dual Enrollment unless you go to a public college in the same state. If you don’t have the means to transport yourself to/from the college or do the classes virtually, you’d get a better experience with AP classes There is obviously no AP exam for dual enrollment, which is nice Often times, DUAL ENROLLMENT IS FREE OF COSTS VERY LITTLE!!!

I earned an associate's degree before graduating highschool through Ohio's college credit plus program. It was the best decision I ever made.

If you do dual enrollment do you have to take the college class at a different location other than your high school? Does the high school/college provide transportation

If done through your school, it depends on how many students your high school has taking the particular class. My school has a professor who comes from the university to teach us because we have a whole group of 30. But other people have to travel to the university. And I don’t believe they provide transportation but ask the college’s dual enrollment advisor.

Why don’t they let sophomores dual enroll tho that’s my issue 😐

I Dual Enrolled and took AP as a Sophomore but my case was very unusual. It was the first time my school offered the option to Sophomores at all and most schools stray away from it believing Sophomores can’t handle the course load.

But you could try to contact the college/university’s DE program directly and ask them if it’s possible.
