The BEST way to load 120 roll film (medium format) on a Patterson Development Reel

What's up guys! I found an awesome trick with loading 120 roll film onto a Patterson developing reel. Before figuring this out, no joke I hated loading medium format film onto the spool, but now... SUPER FAST AND EASY!
All you need is a wallet sized photo about 2-3/8" wide by 3-1/2" tall (60.325mm wide by 88.9mm tall). Some wallet prints are cut in different sizes, so you may need to trim them down. IMO photo paper helps the film glide on the reel and provides just the right amount of stiffness. I first tried using regular paper and cardboard, but they didn't work nearly as well. I hope this is helpful!

You've removed a lot of my anxiety about developing 120 here at home. I've been practicing with a sacrificial roll for a few days now and have been nervous because my practice rounds are so hit or miss. I just cut two sheets of paper to the same width as my film to create my own "cardstock" and am yielding the same results. This is a really great tip. Thank you!

That is a brilliant tip! I cut a piece of index card to try it out, it was great for two test attempts with sacrificial film, but the edges of the card frayed and tiny bits got stuck in the ball bearings. I cleaned that out and cut a new piece from a coated paper stock that won't fray. It works an absolute treat. Setting it up in the light makes it a piece of cake to find the start point and get the film lined up in the dark. Thanks -- you just made my life a lot easier!

Not rewinding'all the way is definitely the easiest, but there are a few methods to get the leader out (if you have a camera that has automatic rewind or went too far rewinding'). There is a retrieval tool, or you can use a wet negative, or even double sided tape. I made a video on how to do it a while back if you need a walk through. 🙂

Nice video! I have never seen this card trick before. When separating the paper from the film, I leave the tape on the film and fold it over the back of the film, then I insert the tape end onto the reel. Having the tape at the end of the film gives it a more solid edge and is much easier to guide onto the reel than the front end of the film is. I will have to try your card trick though! 👍

Great, must give this a go. I already use Patterson reels and don't have issues except for Kodak TMAX. This film has a notably aggressive curl, making it super difficult to get the 'start'. I also recently tried one of the AP reels with wide flanges - this has it's own issues (one is that the leading edge tends to get impeded by the return side of the flange after a 'loop' ), so I am definitely sticking with the Patterson.

The guide part is a good old trick, but to make it easier yet, unfurl the entire film from the backing paper then peel - don’t tear - the backing paper off. Fold the tape back on to the film so it sticks there and now you have a more solid and less curled end to put into the reel.

Reversing the roll (emulsion toward the exterior) can also help with the curled start, but you need to unroll all the film first (what you did) but this increases the risk of a parasitic light exposure if your darkroom is not perfect. Personally I am using a home made big wood box with sleeves, inside there are infrared lights and a cheap B&W camera sensitive to IR a tiny car screen outside allows me to see the loading reel as if I were in full light. Of course the reel must be bone dry if you don't want to be stuck in the middle

I've experienced this as well, any moisture creates a big problem when loading the reels. Reversing the roll is a good idea, I will give that a try next time. Thanks.

I've tried doing that, but have had a harder time, so I've resorted to pinning the paper end down with a foot after unrolled (when I'm loading for real) to keep the film straight to stop it from doing the spinny dance as it loads into the reel. 🙂

Your method works well with long rolls of fresher film. Try a 20 year old roll of 127 that has terrible memory (curl). It will drive you to happy land. The roll bunches up against the Patterson reel while you're attempting to thread the film on. Fresh 35mm is a breeze. Fresh 127 to 120 is a nightmare. Vintage 120 is impossible. I've tried all the tricks and the film just buckles under and goes out of track. I just ordered the AP Patterson reel and I'll see if that helps but I doubt it. Maybe the steel reel? We'll see.

You missed one of the most important issues. How far do you roll the film onto your reels? I see so many people leaving the rolls to where they just have the tail edge onto the reel and it drags when developing.

Thanks for sharing this mate but how do you set the spool for 120 when its by default for 35mm?? I tried ever, it just won't come out of the that 35 position?? Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi there. You need to twist the reel apart. Hold the reel out in front of you with both of your hands. (One hand on each side of it). Twist it apart by turning your right hand away from your body and your left hand towards your body. It should split into two pieces and then you can adjust it to the different size with notches that are on the center spindle. Then reassemble it by twisting it back in the opposite directions. Let me know if you still have trouble and I can make a video on it. I hope that helps! 🙂

@@filmismorefun Thank you very much, it was obviously the opposite direction from the common way of unscrewing apart from the fact that these spools were extremely tightened. I managed finally to do it. Thanks a lot again! :)

Great hack, im going to try it tomorrow, I have a question maybe you can help, I have been using the cinestill c41 kit with no problem and great results, but when I develop 120 film not one image comes out and its bugging me cause I dont want to waste another one of those roles whish had great memories, do I need to change maybe the fixing time with 120? thank you!
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I also use the Cinestill C41 kit, and there should be no time difference when developing 35mm or 120 (during the first batch). Cinestill do suggest slightly extending the times after the first use to compensate for the chemicals exhausting, but even then there should be no variance between the time for 35mm and 120. I hope that helps! 🙂

If it works for you thats great. Now lets talk about the cons on this method of yours. By passing the roll through the card (even if it is just the tip) you are risking sctratches. The other thing is, why are you unrolling your entire film and using the end tip to start with? Once again by doing that you are risking surface scratches by exposing the entire surface before it goes in the reel. Now i´m gonna share what some of us do and it works a treat. But before that, i´m just trying to help to improve your technique by pointing some advantages of the following method. So, i do start by unfolding the paper back until i feel the tip of the film. When i feel it, i cut the paperback with my fingers, and by doing that i have the paperback aligned with the film´s tip. Now that i ve access to the film´s tip i grab it and start to roll it into the reel. If you start this way you are saving the more curled tip to the end of the spiral and at that point there´s no problem because it´s already started and it goes along without any trouble. Hope it helps. Great content btw.

Hi again! So, I tried your suggestion when loading my last roll of 120, and it was still a bit of a pain to load the film onto the reel. Just in case, I kept the card in my pocket, and with using the card in two seconds I had the film loaded. I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm thinking the card is the way to go (at least for me) and how I'm used to doing it. 🤷‍♂️

Why don't you dust start on the other side, cut the corners of the film so it has a chamfer and then roll it in. Still it depends from film to film, I find Tri-X terrible to get on a reel. HP5+ is usually on the reel in 15 seconds

Actually, someone else suggested flipping it around, so I tried that, and it's still a pain to fumble in the dark imo. I've never noticed any differences from film to film, but I bet you're right. 🙂

Very good tip. It’s similar to the reels that AP already have and are very easy to use with 35 an 120. www.foto-r3.com/es/espiral-tanque-ap-compact.html Sorry, link to Spanish shop. But you can find it in many other shops.

Most of the problem seen here seems to be the sloppy, adjustable film size design of the Patterson reel, as well as the material from which it is made. Seems to attract whatever than makes it sticky to loading. Solution: buy other brands or type of reel. Since Patterson tanks are hugely design flawed anyway, binning the whole rig or passing it along on ebay isn't that unreasonable. What options? Pick any: AP (similar style, but much better design), steel tanks, particularly Hewes (expensive) or old Nikor (cheap but buying used), Unicolor (old, mostly used, but flawless design and build). Skip the no-name Japanese steel tanks and reels, unless you want the Patterson experience in steel.
