In this video I help Harold and Rio learn the finer points of playing tug. There are usually very small things that can change the game and i address them in this lesson. They include, frustrating the dog through misses, proper handling while the dog is engaged on the tug and building possessiveness over the tug. As well in the member lesson we address obedience.
Whether you're a beginner dog trainer or just learning some new tricks, this is a great lesson.

Thank you! This is so helpful to me. I've been struggling to get my dog to hold on to the tug just like the dog in the beginning of the video. I used the flirt pole and the "out" too much with him. He began to see more value in chasing the toy than actually catching and possessing it. I have been using your tips for building frustration and tugging. Only issue I'm having now is holding onto the tug! I only outweigh him by 15lbs on a good day. He drags me around the park and I'm sure many onlookers have gotten a good laugh XD Another thing that has really helped him understand the value of the tug was to stop letting him chase the toy. Whenever he either let go of the tug or lost his grip, I put him in an obedience command. By doing so, I made him stop moving and calm down a little. He hates both those things so it became great motivation to not let go.

Thank you Robert, I've been watching your videos for 2 months, and I can clearly say that you are a true master. On March 25, I will have a new family member, an 8-week-old Malinois puppy, who comes from a very famous breeding in Italy, Casa Bellegarde Di Cinzia Bisio. The owner keeps the female and puppies in her house, and gives them the best possible attention. I learned a lot from your videos and I want to thank you for your time so that we and our dog can have an excellent life. God bless you for everything you do for us. Thanks Robert.

I have used your previous videos on training my dog tug of war. IT WORKS. My dog's (Labrador) tug is focused and intense. People are always amazed that kids can be playing, cars driving by, other dogs playing, but, my dog is focused on playing tug. I will say one thing though, I don't do the miss stuff, me or my dog have issues setting it up so that the tug is gotten in those situations. I have been bit a few too many times trying the miss stuff. Maybe I can try it again, maybe I should wear gloves. Stay safe.

That's just part of the game. I get nicks and cuts all the time from tug. I find it really helps if you video yourself playing tug. The problem is almost always you moving your hand last minute or the dog is targeting the handle or the slowest moving part.

Old age IS cruel, but great dogs help force us to remain young. I put on a TON of weight during COVID, have never been in as bad shape. I get short of breath on long walks and short jogs with my Gernan Shepherd...but nothing gets me more motivated to push myself than he does, because he needs it and I "owe" it to him.

I have a 2 year old Boxer who has a soft bite until it's tug time. It's REALLY easy to get his prey drive up and then it's game on! I have to pay more attention to what he does when I let him have the tug toy. I don't remember if he comes back for more or runs away with it.

Any advice on how you get his prey drive up first? It's hit or miss with my GSD, can't figure it out. But seems best after I've left the house & left him alone for awhile, THEN he's more motivated and begging to play.

Hi Robert, Love your videos and we watch it slot as advice to train our 5 months husky lady puppy. One Thing that we don't find a proper solution for tho is, her laying down behaviour. When we walk her and don't let her interact with other dogs, she just falls down on the ground, and I really mean it, she is not laying down, she falls. She does not move a muscle. What works is that we just drop the leash and continue to Walk like nothing happens and don't pay any attention to her, she hates that. But of course that's not always possible. Do you have a advise?

It's really hard to get my dog interested in toys, which is a shame because it makes it harder to get her energy out with ways that are not obedience. When she does get interested, she just wants to toss it around herself. I'm trying to find ways to keep her engaged with me.

What should one do If the dog wants to tug and is committed but then once the "tug" is released the dog want to just chew on it? Should you just take it back and restart the "tug"? Should the game end?
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 3 жыл бұрын
Hook a line up to the tug and rip it away before the dog settles in to dissect/consume the tug. You can also try the two toy method, use a second tug to tempt the dog back into the game. Terriers typically prefer to destroy the toy rather than play the game.

He's a gorgeous old Malinois. Not for the faint of heart, or for people that can't exercise rigorously a minimum of 1 hour daily PLUS additional training & direct engagement time. But fabulous dogs, IF you can meet their HIGH needs (otherwise, expect to rehome. And since you've been warned--feel like a failure if you have to rehome. Very, intensely needy dogs).❤

There are so many reasons to play tug. I do it with any dog that is willing to give it a go for pure fun and nothing else. Other reasons I play tug: it builds confidence, coordination and engagement. Tug is a game of possession and teaches dogs the different modes of possession. Training as part of play removes conflict and you are training in drive. I strong tug game is also a very powerful motivator to use as a reward. Play also ignites the seeking system which stops the fear, rage and panic systems so can be a powerful tool in counter conditioning.

@Karina-Loves-Andreas

At some point, being able to use a toy\tug as a reward is very helpful in obedience. Plus, for some working breeds, very important if you want to go further and do "dog sports". But if you have a very sweet pet that doesn't "need" it, may not be an issue for you. They give us so much, don't they? Whatever they need, to live their happiest, best dog lives. PS: my German Shepherd WOULD have better quality of life & training with a better bite & toy drive. But maybe not so important in some happy go lucky dogs. Best wishes & luck to you!🐾💜
