The three most important words in dog training are YES, NO and GOOD. How they are used and the meaning we give to them can make or break your relationship with your dog. In this video I explain how I use these three basic words to develop a relationship with my dog or any dog that I am training.

Communicating with your dog, motivating your dog to work with you and developing a relationship with your dog that is based on fairness and compliance is the goal in any dog training whether it is obedience, protection dog, hunting, agility or anything.
Gaining a solid dialogue with your dog will help you be a better dog trainer and it will balance the relationship with your dog. Communicating with your dog is the path to getting what you want and getting your dog to understand what you want.

Hey rob, I don’t know if your read this, but I think your amazing, and I love all your videos, I’ve subscribed to your channel, and I’ve shown your videos to loads of people. I have a German Shepard, and she’s almost 2 and a half. I wanted to get her trained when she was a puppy, but the other half didn’t think she needed it, and well the other half left me and Kara, and not long after, when Kara was 8 months old, she got attacked by another dog off a lead, before this attack she was all bouncy and wanting to meet other dogs, the dog didn’t bite her, but since then she doesn’t trust other dogs, she seems aggressive towards other dogs, and last year I was gonna do some training, but then she pulled her tendon in her back leg, so she had surgery, and then she had a pyometra, so she had to have surgery on that aswel, she had a long horrible year last year, but now she can run round the big garden, it’s just that next door have 3 dogs, and she can see them, and all she does is run up snd down the garden by the fence and doesn’t listen to me at all, and the same when we are out on walks, or if there is a knock on the door. inside the house she listens and comes when called, she does do it in the garden when there isn’t any dogs out next door, but she’s too focused on the other dogs than me, even when I have treats or chicken, she just wants to see them, I don’t know how to be more appealing. Please help!

thank you! I just found you on KZbin and I like your straightforwardness and your way of explaining. I just started obedience training in a group with a professional - just had one class so far, but I can see you both have the same approach, so this will help reinforce correct behaviors (on my part) to properly train my 10 month old good-boy.

Totally agree with you clear concise short non emotional word information also need to be aware of body language too I'm working with a wild cat with the hope tame. He very happy to come up for food next step is hands are not the food. He goes to hit the hand I say no. No change in body position head down eyes slowing blinking cat sits back and looks at me. Then no food what does she want. Hopeful I will achieve my goals. Point is clear consistent language set up for animals to understand. And for you to always learn

I wish I'd learned about using verbal markers, bridge words, and verbal corrections (interupters) before I got my puppy. I totally blew the word "no". But I've been CONSISTENTLY using verbal markers, bridges & verbal corrections over the last couple months, the obedience improvement has been night & day. I say "Cheep" rather than "yes"--I decided to do that because I just feel like I say "Yes" too much in general--but I see lots of people using "Yes" with great success. I started using "Eh Eh" as my dog's correction word. Now, when he hears it, he immediately tries to reposition himself if I'm asking him to do something, or stops what he's doing if I'm correcting him for something he just shouldn't be doing (can even act as "leave it", but he knows "leave it", too. My 2.5 yr old GSD is shaping up so nicely--we have a lovely structured walk now, he maintains a loose leash heel when asked, and gets "break" as a release to sniff, pee, great someone with my permission. I don't think Robert mentioned "release" words in this video, but I'm pretty sure he uses them too. Release words are just as important as the other three categories, I use my "Break" release all the time. He knows he can break his "sit" to eat after I place his bowl down & say it, chase a squirrel if we're outside and I say it, come off "place" when I say it...Release markers have also made a HUGE improvement in communication & obedience, makes training much easier!❤❤❤

Hi Robert. This was a useful video, thanks. Have a question. I´ve just adopted a 3 yo Doberman. Extremely well behave and lovable hehe. I want to train him, at least the basic, Come, leave it, sit, heel etc... How many minutos a day should I train him for? Should I train one command and until he gets it move to the next? And is it better to use the clicker or the e collar? I´ve heard the e collar isn´t aggressive as I thought, but it is best used once the dog know its commands? Hope you can clarify this for me, would appreciate it. :)

Hello Robert, I love your training videos, simple but effective. Our 11 weeks old flatcoated retriever male puppy is getting a bit far on the biting thing, (we have him when he was 9 weeks old) he always touched the skin and even blooding a bit, sometimes also growing as accompanied with biting and pulling our cloth. His behavior gets worse when he is overwhelmed or overexcited. He is otherwise doing pretty well with house training, puppy pen playing( we haven’t completed the crate training yet, at the moment he can stay in his crate for about 4-5 minutes with the door closed) I have a daily schedule for him to go out potty, short walks/socializing, play, and short sessions of basic training everyday... We always say “No” right away or walk away or put him into his play pen and ignore him when he bites too much/too hard. But he hasn’t be able to slowing down much, could you please give any good tips how to stop that behavior effectively? Many thanks🙏 Pingping

This behaviour way is great for most domestic animals from pigs hens cows horses cats(although cats are a special category independent thinkers, maybe) it's all about behaviour the more you understand the better it is. My advice is you can and have time go and sit in paddock of sheep and watch you will learn so much

Robert, When my dog is in the back yard and barks too much I call him to come and sometimes he ignores my command (1/2 great pyre [typical behavior]) but eventually comes to my command. How should I respond? I am torn between discipline for not coming and praise for coming. Please help. Thank you.

@Flippokid
@Flippokid 3 жыл бұрын
Don't wait with disciplining him until he comes. If he ignores your command, you go to him and give him a correction. (Because you don't want to punish him when he does listen) But also train his reactivity. Teach him to bark on command, if you haven't already, and to stop when you tell him to stop. Personally I've also found that a short, loud shout shuts most dogs up.

rakesh-puppies need the extra food and nutrition while they are growing. they can develop problems in bone, muscle and development if underfed. i also have GSDs. please google “feeding chart for puppies” and many sites will pop up. the charts go according to both weight and age to get the recommended amount to feed at any given time/weight. you should always measure the portions and also at 5 months should be using a puppy formula. feeding three or four times a day is good. some breeders even recommend using puppy formula for the first 1.5 to 2 years of age. there is also a weight/age recommendation on the back of the bag of puppy formula food. large breed puppies develop more slowly than other dogs and need a different program for proper feeding. hope this helps.

I kept my gsd on large breed puppy formula until he was a little over 1yo. He’s a Shiloh Shepherd, so bigger than your standard gsd. Look up his caloric requirements for a day, divide by 3, and feed him that three times daily. Royal Canin is good, but use the large breed puppy formula.
