It's very interesting that you like this more than the "year" releases. Foursquare does a year release every year (2010 is the current, 2005 being the best I've ever tasted). These are always 12 years old and 100% ex-bourbon (Jack Daniel's) casks. They also usually do two named releases a year. One will be a lower proof (usually around 100 proof) that has a double maturation (ex-bourbon and ex-port, ex-Madeira, ex-Sherry, ex-zinfandel, ex-Cognac, etc). The recent examples of these were Sagacity, Detente, Indelible, Dominus, Premise, and Touchstone. Depending on your market these are $60-90. The named release is also 100% ex-bourbon, but just slightly older, 14-18 years usually. These are in the $150 range and include Nobilary, Touchstone, Shibboleth. They also seem to be recently releasing an older barrel proof double maturation product but I haven't bought one as the price is often quite high (160+ in my market). Sovereignty and Redoubtable are the most recent ones on the shelf. I've found many people that either prefer the double maturation or the yearly release, and people who like all three. But the more expensive older releases are often divisive. 14+ years aging in Barbados is a long time to sit in a barrel and they can often be too oaky for some.

Great comment Andrew! Makes us want to look out for those other releases that fall more in this range of Nobiliary. Maybe they're just the ones that are right up our alley? Or maybe we need to revisit one of the yearly releases? Probably both.

I'm a gigantic fan of Foursquare, and visited the distillery last year which was an incredible experience. What I love about Foursquare is that they're all so different from vintage to vintage, or which casks they're finished in. While Nobiliary is hard to find now, I'd keep an eye out for either the yearly vintages or the older ex-bourbon aged casks (ie: Shibboleth or Isonomy). With that said, I'd be happy to send several Foursquare samples to add to your blind pool as I have a ton!

I love you both however, once again it's my favourite Superior Alien that hits the nail with a sledgehammer (Praise Jesus!!)! Like Erin, I am not a person who likes rum, let alone would ever go out of their way to find a bottle to put in my liquor cabinet. That said, I have had a couple different FourSquare products at different events and as rums go, it wasn't the worst thing I have ever tasted booze wise. Of course in saying that a bottle of FourSquare (if you can even find one) Rum of any kind typically Starts at $180.00 CDN and goes up quickly from there. A bottle of FourSquare Barbados Rum 2005 16 year old runs at an eye watering $254.00CDN and as much as I am intrigued I can buy 2 bottles of Port Charlotte Islay Scotch PLUS 2 perfect Ribeyes and two Lobsters with Morel and Chantrelle mushrooms and the fixings for a wonderful night for two with the change. I don't mind paying premium money for a premium product but, I like value and I would also prefer what I buy to my taste. As an example with Watches, I like Tudor and Omega but I can afford Zodiac and Oris so those are the watches I have and I'm very happy with them. I like Islay Scotch but can't justify anything over $200.00 for a bottle (at least not at my current income) so I choose bottles like Port Charlotte, Laphroig Lore, and Lagavulin 16. I do not doubt for an instant that you guys are wrong and that this is likely to be the best Rum I've ever tasted, but given the cost, availability and that I'm not drawn to rums for the most part, I guess my cabinet will stay rum free until I ever meet someone who simply adores that spirit, and that I adore enough to buy that bottle of rum. Great review, as always!! Cheers - Dave

FourSquare is the only rum that I typically drink neat without hesitation. This distillery does not play games like so many other rum distilleries that sweeteners to make their products appeal to the masses. It’s very obvious that FourSquare is a sipping rum of high quality. Sure - those eccentric non-bourbon aromas like acetone and rubber can be a turn off. But as one’s nose adjusts, the many other notes and flavors start to open up. I had a half-full 2007 hiding in the back of the cabinet for a while. Opening it, no acetone or other “weird” aromas. Just about all of the “good” notes remained. I kept going back to it - and like you folks, I typically reach for American whiskey almost all of the time. The annual releases (2007, 2008, 2010, etc.) seem to have very similar profiles. The named releases (Nobiliary, Sagacity, Shibboleth, etc.) vary in proof and flavor/nose. I think you can always count on grabbing the annual releases. Do your homework on the named releases before buying. Most devoted bourbon drinkers will likely lean toward the expressions with higher proof as well as those containing mostly if not all the juice aged in the ex-bourbon barrels. I believe that they age their rums individually in single types of barrels, then blend the segregated juices together - kinda like how Canadian whisky is blended. I think this helps with their ability to create one superior expression after another. Seems FourSquare starts off with quality juice with the intent to patiently age it - not try to fix or soup up a subpar batch. I’ve only had one expression so far that didn’t quite measure up - Shibboleth. FourSquare also owns the “Doorly’s” label. You’ll hear some pushing this brand as a daily FourSquare. Almost all of those expressions are only 80 proof, so while the rum is good for being low proof, it will feel thin after having some FourSquare. It’s usually very affordable so they’re good to use in cocktails or sipping juice for lower proof guests.

Wait! You guys really don't know how rum is made? It's distilled pretty much like whiskey is distilled but they mostly use either sugar cane or molasses to make it. I will say some of my favorite rums are distilled in Barbados, but Foursquare is not one of them. Also, like whiskey, rum made in different distilleries and different geographic location all taste different. My current favorites are rum made in Hawaii and in Venezuela.

Speaking more to the differences in how variations of rum are made based on country. Barbados certainly seems to be a great place for rum producers.
@arbeckWA Жыл бұрын
I'm curious what rums from Barbados you like outside of Foursquare. Mount Gay is solid, but is really close to the Foursquare made products and I believe a worse value. There is the West Indies Rum Distillery, but they're owned by Plantation and most of the products you can get from there have way too much sugar added. There's also St. Nicholas Abbey, but very little of their rum is exported and for a long time they were sourcing their aged product from Foursquare (Anything 8 years or under should be their own distillate now).

@@arbeckWA Plantation 20th Anniversary, Doorly's 12 Year Old, R.L. Seal 10 Year Old are good sipping rums. These Bourbon channels kill me. I can't imagine limiting myself to just bourbon and rye. There are unbelievable Rums, Tequilas, Gins, Mezcals, Raicillas, Armagnacs, Cognacs, etc. But you have to get as deep into it as you do the bourbons. For example, there is an entire underworld of very rare and expensive Chartreuse. If I just had one evening to fry your brain, I'd start with La Veneosa Sierra del Tigre Raicilla. It smells a little like blue cheese and tastes like berries with a whisp of smoke. Or any tequila from Cascahuin is not the same product as crap like Don Julio 1942 or Clase Azul. My point- a lot of people think they don't like Rums, Tequilas, etc. Because they just don't know. But, I HAVE been drinking for almost 50 years. Wild Turkey 101 was my go to in the early 1980s...
