The Best Worst "Kaiju" Movie Ever Made

I feel like I’m the only one that still remembers 2010’s “Gulliver’s Travels”. Was this just a fever dream I had back in the day when Jack Black was a literal kaiju who destroyed an armada of battleships while playing Guitar Hero? For those who may not have seen this movie, the plot follows Lemuel Gulliver played by Jack Black, a slacker mailroom clerk at a New York newspaper who dreams of becoming a travel writer. Assigned to write about the Bermuda Triangle, Gulliver ends up on the island of Lilliput, where he ends up being a giant kaiju sized human among the tiny inhabitants.
In Lilliput, Gulliver becomes a hero by helping the Lilliputians fend off their rivals, the Blefuscudians, and tells exaggerated stories about his life like how he’s the President of Awesome and his Vice President is Yoda. Much like “School Of Rock”, which is arguably one of Jack Black’s best movies, “Gulliver’s Travels” has a liar revealed storyline where Gulliver is forced to reveal his true self, leading to a journey of self-discovery. Gulliver learns the value of honesty and humility and then battles a GUNDAM like a scene right out of Pacific Rim or something.
This film was absolutely trashed by critics when it was first released. It’s currently sitting at 20% on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 27%. The consensus from critics states the following: “Though Jack Black is back doing what he does best, Gulliver's Travels largely fails to do any justice to its source material, relying instead on juvenile humor and special effects”. But that being said, I’ve always loved this movie. I remember back when I was a kid, around eight years old, and I saw the trailer for it on TV and I begged my dad to take me to go see it.

I rememeber seeing this one in theatres when it came out and finding it very funny. Granted I was a literall child and, whilst I did read the book at that point in time, I thought it was nothing more than a fun fantasy adventure story.

I was around 18 when I saw this dogshite air on the USA network. I kept flipping back and forth between this and something on TBS. I ended up finishing this for some odd reason and was not pleased with it at all. I wasn't a Jack Black fan before this. He did School of Rock, and that's about it. I much prefer him in supporting roles like in Cable Guy or The Jackal.

I've talked about a few animated movies and TV shows here and there. Recently, I made a video on Smiling Friends. Last year throughout the month of October, I reviewed 31 stop-motion animated horror movies. Some were a mix of stop motion and live action (King Kong, Clash of the Titans) while others were 100% stop motion (Coraline, Corpse Bride, and Operator). Beyond that though in 2022, I covered Tales From Genesis Space and Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood. I also briefly talked about the SpiderVerse movies in my Spider-Man tier list video. As of right now, I'm working on a massive episode-by-episode retrospective on Neon Genesis Evangelion. That video doesn't really have a set release date since the scope is so big right now. There are some animated movies that I plan on covering in the meantime here on this channel like It’s Such a Beautiful Day, Fantastic Planet, and Dinosaur. I do really want to make more "marathon reviews" where I cover an entire franchise/series and talk about each movie for about three minutes. I would like to do "Reviewing Every Hayao Miyazaki Movie" and "Reviewing Every Shrek Movie" sometime this year. I am somewhat hesitant to cover a ton of animated movies. My background is in live-action filmmaking and I feel like a lot of my analysis benefits from that. I don't know a lot about animation and there are other people here on KZbin way more qualified to speak on that than I am. I think that's why if you do check out my videos covering animated movies, I spend more time talking about story, characters, and themes more than the aesthetics and visuals. Ironically enough, I am actually experimenting with making an animated TV pilot where it's filmed in live-action and then rotoscoped. Anyways, sorry bit of a long winded explanation haha!
