Haven't finished the video but when it comes to killing your darlings - no matter what it is, don't permanently delete it. Create a separate document so you can put them all there because maybe it will work in a different book. For each book I write there's a 'deleted scenes' document. It just makes killing your darlings much easier and it's basically recycling.

Wow! This is one of the best, most informative writing advice videos I've ever seen. I'm sending it to all the writer friends I know! For those who don't have time to watch it, here's the TL;DR Step 1: Writing is a habit (Write every day. Start small, but make a habit out of it to keep improving) Step 2: Kill your darlings (Be prepared to sacrifice the ideas you love for the sake of the story) Step 3: Listen to your inner voice (Don't just do what other people say. Follow the voice inside you to make your own story) Step 4: A deal is made (Compromise is key. Find others who are willing to help you and give you feedback. You can't make anything good in an echo chamber) Step 5: Writing is a habit (Step 1 again but at a more elevated level. Use the skills you have developed to create something you can be proud of) Step 6: Revel (Take time to celebrate and be happy with what you've done. Don't be overly critical of yourself) Step 7: Remember (Keep in mind your favorite works that inspired you. Make sure you read other author's work so you can apply the things that you learn) Step 8: Regret (Remember, No book is perfect. Even if there are some things you regret about your own finished works, you can take those as a learning opportunity) Step 9: Betrayal (The writing community is full of people. Some are kind. Some are critical. Be prepared for mixed reviews, and take everything with a grain of salt. He also says here to try making a "Writing advice" video of your own to see what things you've come to treasure on your writing journey) Step 10: Punishment. (You've done a lot by now, and it was worth the cost! Hopefully. Don't beat yourself up over the time you spent honing your writing skill. This is a beautiful artform and you are a beautiful person for participating in it) Please, share this video so more people can have this practical wisdom! It'll support a great channel too!

By about a minute and a half in, I was going to write a comment saying thank you for the community post because I don't watch these videos partially for the same reason you were making fun of but now I'm not sure what to feel. That was definitely a thing I watched, for sure. Truly set apart from the loads of other writing advice internet available through that strange tool called youtube.

As someone who's overthought making stuff for several years and got very overly perfectionist with it to the point that I barely made anything...I can safely say after all this time that this video doesn't even phase me in the slightest...I just instinctually "get" everything portrayed here. It can sometimes feel like the "voices" aren't actually you if your too self aware. Thankfully I know the solution to overcome perfectionism and avoid subconcious nhilism (via purpose) but as a result I've had to humble myself enough to realize that while I came up with some crazy ideas...it'll take time and effort to make any of it come true...a lot of time and effort...and if I'm not willing to do that...then it won't happen. Crazy stuff amiright?! :O

The first part was a great parody to these typical sales videos. I was waiting for you to pitch your writing summer class that usually costs $ 5000 but that you will sell for $ 500 to me because I’m so special. My one rule is to follow my gut. If I listen to all the voices, I’ll end up with 300+ half-finished stories.

I'm not a writer in the traditional sense, my artistic focus is instead the creation of many many niche, surreal, absurdist Star Trek memes on Facebook with for a tiny and discerning audience. This ten stage process is essentially the precise same as this. Usually the, uhhh, voice for me is Picard. He starts out around steo 3 or 4 saying things like "Good Lord" a lot and not being mad, just disappointed. Then the voices and I, we take things too far again, and he's toking a crackpipe trying to find any divinity he can to punch them in their big stupid faces, while I'm all het up, and riling up mobs calling for Beige Crusade (a crusade of and for Beige, not against it, to be ckeae), and everything crashes down our us once more. Rinse and repeat. Its not the flashiest method and it's not the most reliable method, and it's not generally a socially accepted metgod but I can guarantee you that there are things that you will see and do whilst following it that are definitely something like resulys (usually in the form of "consequences", but results nevertheless. Speaking as a person that has a following of literally *some* fans, you'd be a fool not to at least consider this plan.

But what if your darlings are the voices? I have two "side characters" who brought my main project to a screeching halt with just a few scenes, barely an outline. And yet, they have now caused me to write my best work to date in their own "spin-off" stories. They are the main attraction now, out of my control. It is as though they have opened a portal from a distant yet here, alien world, for their minds to leak through and entwine with mine so that I may watch their very real lives unfold through their eyes, documenting what I witness - such beauty. I can hear, feel, touch, smell their reality channeled through me, transformed into words I did not think I had in me. I am obsessed with them. I can't write about anything else. I could not make a deal for they did not ask for my opinion or my permission. They consume me. I have no life beyond them. Please, don't send help. Perhaps if I wait long enough, I will be sucked in through that portal and become one with them. I wish to remain there forever.

On a more serious note (although lbr it was more or less accurate to reality), I am getting loads of worldbuilding done with these stories which should be useful for the original story if I ever return to work on it... I may have to rework the whole thing to make use of what I've learned, writing these, about the characters, the world, and writing itself. If they ever let go of me and stop being more compelling than the protagonists, that is. Oof.
