If i did not already have the XF 16-80 F/4 i'd be considering this, the 16-80 turned into my walk around lens (at 80mm and F/4 the DOF is pretty shallow) and is just about bright enough for most things, well bright enough that for 1 more stop of light i am not exchanging

I too, have the 16-80 Fujinon, and therefore wouldn't consider switching. I'm a little bemused that Tamron chose to make such a lens, given that (in Australia at least), there's a tendency to often bundle this lens with a body. Locally, the Tamron is also around 30% dearer than the Fujinon.

I’ve come so close to buying this lens. It has everything I want - wide aperture, focal range, stabilization…BUT, the deal breakers are no aperture ring on it and the size. I just can’t stick that monster on my xe4. lol.

Superb reviews. I already trimmed down my lenses options to the Tamron 11-20 and a Fujinon’s veteran 35mm 1.4. I used to travel with the Fujicrons (23 and 16) paired with either the older not AF Samyang 12mm and/or Laowa’s 9mm. I’m thinking seriously to acquire this 17-70.

Hi dear Matti, I have 16-80 F4 Fujinon. I do not like to operate with it, it because you do not have phisical aperture on the optic particularly using the small XE4. I have an XT4 and an XE4 I have 10-24 F4 too. Both stabilized. I have many prime lenses and I like more to use prime...Greathings from Italy

Thanks for the nice review I purchased the Tamron 18-300 for my X-T4, which is a nice all in one lens for travel. I used to like AF+MF over ride but with the Tamron lenses having the manual focus behind the zoom instead of in front it got moved too easily so i had to disable it. Why they do not put the MF ring in front of the zoom ring I do not know, but that is the main downside for me.

The 16-55 is sharper at 16mm and has less aberrations vs the 17-70. But the extra range and OIS is a huge benefit and a worthy trade-off I think. Probably gonna get one.

Nice review, thank you. I traded in my Fuji 16-80mm lens for the Tamron 17-170mm. I do like the image quality and the f2.8 feature better, although I did like the manual, marked aperture ring on the Fuji. Clearly the camera knows that the Tamron is attached, but are in-camera corrections for the Tamron present and enabled, or do I have to do something in order to get the in-camera corrections for vignetting and geometric distortion? Thanks!

I am torn between this n the similar Fuji zoom with f4. I love the aperture ring on the Fuji n Tamron’s 2.8. I use it mainly to create cinematic video footage so the bigger aperture is better right? But how much better? Hope u can shed some lights. Thx

I don't know what you want and how you define better. F4 lets in half as much light as F2.8 and the latter gives you slightly more background blur. I think you need to test both for your video and see which one you like more. Rent both and test.

Don't complain much. Canon, Nikon and Sony are privileged when we speak about third partners. Fuji starts now with Tamrom and from Sigma there's almost nothing. Viltrox, a little Tokina... For the three bigs, all produce lenses. Ok. It's true that apsc for Canon is almost disappeared,but with the R7 n 10 maybe there's light at the end of tunnel. Serie M? Dead. (I owe one)

I just got this lens. Does your copy have a focus pulse/breathing when zooming? I'm trying to see if it's my lens copy or something that is in every lens. If i was only doing photo, this wouldn't be an issue, but for video I often use the fuji for livestreaming at weddings, I currently use the 18-55 kit lens which works great except it's a variable aperture lens.

I've recently got this Tamron lens, have only used it a couple of times so far doing gig photography, and did notice heavy focus breathing. Meaning image would miss focus while zooming in or out. Which was strange as the camera had already found what to focus on.

Did you noticed any problem when zooming the tamron one? Some weird Focus stuff? Even on manual, when i change the focal distance it simply blur everything and then when I stop focusing it comes back to normal. Just want to know if this is common among these, or it's a problem with my one

That's a bit problematic question to answer. I tried it, all manual settings, and I can definitely see steps in the exposure when I zoom in or out. Like the camera was correcting something in the background. In the end the exposure seems to stay constant, but if you zoom while filming, you are going to see steps in the exposure. I repeat, I had all in manual: shutter, aperture and ISO. Then again, manual zooming does not look good in video. So, if you don't zoom while filming it should be ok. If you want a perfect lens for video then you should be looking at cine lenses.

@@mattisulanto Thanks for you answer, very informative. I think, like for the xf16-55 the camera applies different lens correction profiles at different focal length, seems to be a problem with a few lenses of the fuji system. You might not like the look of zooming in video but some do!

I agree with your comment on size. It's too big for me also. I switched to Fuji long ago because of their compact size. Too bad, as the zoom range is decent and f 2.8 is nice.

I returned this lens the next day. It had severe back focus issues at 70mm. I tried to focus manually but still no sharpness and contrast. Got the Fuji 16-55 instead and that lens works just fine. Tamron makes some great lenses but I guess quality control is a weak point. I have never had any quality issues with Fuji lenses.

Thanks for sharing. It's always a bummer when you get a bad sample. However, every manufacturer have their share of quality control issues, also Fuji, but those issues are rare and it's really bad luck to get a bad sample from any brand.

Fine review, as always. However, this lens isn't ideal for Fujifilm users - as a truly 3rd party lens it is, it does have a totally different design language, than say Fujifilm (Fujinon) XF series lenses for instance, and worst of it all, no aperture ring. Fujifilm does have the excellent XF16-55/2.8, also the smaller size, great XF 18-55/2.8-4 Fujinon lenses, for instance.

@@lamaludwig1470 The X-H2 doesn't have the classic Dials like the X-H1, or X-T Series anymore. The GFX-100(s) also the same. I like & enjoy my E1, E2, T1 & X100 LE. Also not being a PASM Fan. I've grown up with SLRs into the 80's, so standard aperture dial onto the lens, shutterspeed dial onto the body is fine for myself, and enough.

I can't say I noticed that. The exposure can of course change in some situations. For example, you have a big white rectangle that has a small black square in the middle. If you take a shot of the rectangle at 17mm and then zoom in to 70mm for the black square, you are going to get two different exposures. That's because there is more white in the first picture and all black in the the second picture.

I think the range is pretty similar except fuji has a bit more reach. unless you need a faster aperture, stick with what you have. It is also slightly larger and heavier, and also has no aperture ring which is dealbreaker for fuji users who tend to like using the dials and stuff.

@@mattisulanto Fuji 16-55 2.8 distorts very little that I rarely need to fix in post. For me this Tamron distorts so much it slowed down my workflow that I had to return it. I'm a fulltime real estate photographer.

Your Fuji zoom also has a hefty barrel distortion at the wide end and clearly visible pincushion distortion at the tele end, if auto correction is not applied. However, you have to what you have to do for your workflow and I'm happy that the Fuji lens works well for you.

@@mattisulanto lol i know. for context, I also shoot mainly with sony like the A7iii and A7R3. My first lens for that system was the Sony GM 24-70mm f/2.8 (Gen 1) and that lens was ginormous. I just think that this tamron looks ridiculously big while on the Fuji camera body. But yes, I do understand how versatile it is with its focal range basically being a 24-105mm lens. One could only wish that they could make a lens with this focal range the same size as Fuji's OG kit lens, the 18mm to 55mm f/2.8. But we all know that's not scientifically/physically possible. lol
