Dude, the last part is mindblowingly crazy, I forgot that Mihawk does have that crucifix and is carrying a sword shaped like a cross and Zoro tied to a cross. EDIT: During Wano after the death scene, Zoro wakes up and is literally mummy wrapped like a cross. I was thinking Zoro has been avoiding death for so long in Wano he's literally at death's door. Maybe the secret of a black blade is conquering death. Conqueror's Haki, to overpower death with will and to be willing to die (I think this is Mihawk, training Zoro was always counter intuitive unless Mihawk was always willing to die to be tested).

it's true for mihawk but I think that Zoro's death metaphor will be more buddism inspired as all his attacks are Buddhist inspired and he made a point to say he didn't believe in God once early in the story. his attacks represents the different stages of hell in Buddhism. so he will conquer death by achieving enlightenment in a buddist sense which is to let go of your attachment or craving for earthly desires. (not avoid them all together common misconception) then be free of your attachment to rebirth. plenty of rebirth/death metaphors in Buddhism too.

@@Vinlan.D well I don't really have a specific theory about how buddism will factor in. I don't know much about the different mythologies around different Buddhist sects. the Japanese zen buddist of which I have heard Oda speak positively of have their own mythology that is mixed with Shinto. I just know that mihawk and Zoro both represent spiritually but very different sides of it. and here is the confusion I mentioned with the Buddhist philosophy that often confuses people achieving enlightenment would NOT mean for Zoro to give up his desire to be the strongest. just letting go of the ATTACHMENT to it. the idea being that he would no longer be disappointed IF he failed. no longer suffering in his failure but still giving it 100% effort is really the goal of Buddhism. if you aren't attached to your own selfish desires, you can also make the greater good a genuine priority for yourself. I think Zoro already does this to an extent by helping Luffy. generally the idea is that without a strong attachment to your desires you can prioritize them more objectively. but I don't know how much of Buddhist philosophy will actually be involved, because the other side is the Mythology. the stories of the Vedas, spirits different planes of existence and the cycles rebirth and such. I don't know as much about the Mythology of deferent buddists by I'm sure that some of them factor in to everything you said in this video. there is a long reddit post about all the references that Zoro has with Buddhism if you look up Zoro's God mode and Buddism in One Piece there is a long reddit post and video from JB theories all though I think he missed a lot and doesn't understand buddism very well but he lays out the mythological references really well.

I recently had a thought about the original 4 members; I think they are connected with the 4 horsemen of the apocalypses. Sanji (obviously) affected by famine, Nami affected by war, Ussop affected by pestilence (with Kaya) and Zoro affected by the White Horse, Death (with Kuina) I wonder how many others have seen them through this lens.

The four horsemen are famine, war, death, and *conquest* not pestilence. Pestilence is just a vector of death. Most straw hats are effected by conquest. Conquest is tyranny after all. Arlong and the world government are conquest manifested. War is how they interact of course with Jimbei and the fishman. Sanji is famine, ussop, Robin, especially brook, and Zoro is all death. Robin is special because she is death of history and civilization.

My theory is Zoro will acquire exactly one black blade. It will be the Wado Ichimonji. The blade he and Kuina (sp?) shared a dream together and the blade that Zoro has had the most time spent using. If will/sprit/haki has anything to do with it, I believe this blade is the one. He might blacken the other ones later, sure, but Wado will be the first.

In Tarot Death means rebirth. Not only was the Tower card pulled (great change, destruction, revelation), but symbolically speaking the Death card was too. In a sense, Zoro was reborn, and so was Luffy, and Sanji. Chopper unlocked greater levels of his capabilities as a doctor, death and rebirth. Maybe others too were affected in such a way. Perhaps when Joy Boy awake in Luffy it was the Sun card too.

WOW! This is an energy rich diet. Awesome stuff. I think you're bang on with this video. I'm just wondering if Zoro will have to defeat the reaper or allow the reaper to cut him down? Much like how he surrendered his life over to Mihawk and was slashed across the body rather than retreat, or like Ichigo allowing his Zanpakuto to pierce him. Allowing Mihawk to slash him, allowing Kuma to give him Luffy's pain, both makes me believe the answer lies in Zoro not fearing and struggling against the reaper, but to accept his blow. I think this might be the way he receives. Either way, again, great video. Zoro's character is the one with the most depth out of all the starw hats. This video proves that, in my opinion.

One of my favorite fantasy book series the Wheel of Time has a concept/technique among swordsman known as 'Sheathing the Sword' which is essentially the concept of giving up on survival to ensure victory, sheathing your sword in your enemy but accepting into your in return. I think this describes the mindset of Zoro in many instances, but especially when he faced King thus the viewing of Death personified afterwards.

I saved this video to watch it like old times, with headphones. So thank you for this awesome video. I love it that zoro's love for luffy is reflected in zoro's speech throughout the entire story. remember what he told luffy the first time he met mihawk? "if I fullfill my dream now, I can help you better with yours", and moments after king told him that he possesses the quality of a king, conqueror's haki, the colour of a supreme king, he decides to become the king of hell so he wouldn't be in the way of luffy becoming the king of pirates (king of the free folks). His whole decision making is based on that love for luffy and his crewmates. what a character!

Luffy's pain was given to him and it was unbearable. Luffy can take physical pain but not cuts.. He will get exhaust but due to high endurance he can keep going longer and keep coming back. Zoro have some of those since he works hard all day so when the pain is transferred it was massively unbearable since he was in relaxed mode. While in fights they go through an adrenaline rush so they ignore the pain and can move on but later it becomes painful which he went thru for his own exhaustion and Luffy's pain.. So for Zoro, it was more than what we can think about and yet he survived cause he can endure. I heard what happened was he died but could not find his way so he came back to life lol.

Some do notice that mihawks sword faces upright but to some The smaller sword /knife mihawk had inside a cross necklace does at times resemble St Peters Cross in some way St Peter didn’t feel worthy of being crucified face upwards like Christ but rather wanted the cross facing the opposite way and was crucified upside down, in Rome, , it’s possible Zoro has to do the exact opposite of Mihawk to claim a black blade and change his swords into them and to actually Defeat him also.

Zoro resembles Kenpachi Zaraki significantly. Both of them only gets stronger when near death, which means it’s hard to kill them. There is finnish mythology about pantheon of death that somewhat matches here. To enter the underworld, Tuonela, there are three trials to be conquered. First is the trial of wisdom, facing Tuonen Tytti, Maiden of underworld, in battle of wits. Anyone who attempts this trial has to convince literal goddess of wisdom that they are dead indeed, to pass trough her domain. Second trial is trial of might, facing Surma, pet dog to goddess of rot and decay, who himself is the god of unhinged rage and murder. You either die for real or you beat the physical embodiment of brutal death. Third trial is trial of courage, facing Painajainen, The god of nightmares, who will transform himself into the one thing you fear most. Only way to get past this one is for him to turn into you. If you are the one who you fear most, then he can not stop you because he will get your fears as he transforms into you. You have to be scariest thing in the world to beat the nighmares trial. All three trials would have been done by timeskip. Wisdom obtained against MR.1 Brutal death obtained with Kuma. And nightmare being the monkeys from mihawks island. Just a fun little connection to journeys of death from finnish faith, where the end goal is to meet tuonetar, goddess of death.

River tuoni, the path that leads down to underworld from tuonen tytti's domain. Waters of this river hold the souls of truly dead, so you can fish up a soul heading down the river and place it back into soulless body. Anything goes, even a corpse of a rat. Then there is the goblet of eternal death. An artifact carried by Tuonetar. Never drink from this goblet because it has power to make your death unchangeable, and instead of getting to see the disgusting landscape that is the realm of death, you will relive your entire life over and over, dying exact same way no matter how you try to avoid it. Basically it is eternal timeloop
