In which Craig Benzine teaches you about the United States Congress, why it's bicameral, and what bicameral means. Craig tells you what the Senate and House of Representatives are for, talks about some of the histories of the institutions, and reveals to you just how you can become a representative. It's not that easy. But an eagle gets punched, so there's that.

I've noticed that some people don't care for the jokes in this series. However, I love them. I did my bachelor's degree in political science, and this course feels very similar to the classroom settings I experienced. Bad jokes and funny voices are a political science thing. No one ever notices that it's a thing.

This... I'm currently taking Political Science, my first semester. And this is so eerily similar to the classroom lectures with jokes and jabs at certain parts of government. It must just be how most political scientists are taught and so carries on.

You're right, it's something much worse. It was understood that the allowance of that freedom would in effect dis-empower the people as apposed to the opposite. Point being it's extremely easy to simply talk about freedom, choice, and free will but MUCH harder to put into practice. What's better, a prison you have to force others into, or a prison where the inhabitants believe it's their choice to reside in?

My dad keeps talking about how most millennials today know nothing about American government and he's always asking me questions about how a bill becomes law or what comprises the constitution and I'm sitting there with a blank look on my face. I was barely taught this stuff in school.

How clever, foresighted or incorruptible was it to create a bicameral system of government that was specifically designed to preserve the position of Slave states in both Houses, a fact behind the Connecticut Compromise that was conspicuously not mentioned in this video? Let's not laud the Founding Fathers and their creations to the heavens.

tootz1950 Yes but in countries like UK where I live they still have shady donations but it is much more controlled. 2012 US elections spending was above $6billion whereas 2010 UK election was £32 million roughly $50 million. Also in the UK you are only allowed a certain number of political adverts and they have a warning before them saying they are a political advert. Basically it means parties are less focused on special interests.

Keith Hughes In some ways it is better for people to elect Senators, because it's more democratic. But if the State legislature elects Senators, then those members would be able to keep really good tabs on the Senator and get rid of him if he does his job badly, unlike the public whose biggest knowledge of him/her comes mostly from campaign commercials and the occasional news story.

I know I'm late to the game, but a few fact-checks: -There are 27, not 28 amendments to the Constitution (this has been well-established in other comments) -California has 53, not 52 Representatives (you're leaving out poor Susan Davis of San Diego!) -While you added the picture of Montana, you totally left out Delaware in the list of states with one Representative As far as errors go, discussing politics and government invites lots of cringe-worthy invective when numbers are even ever-so-slightly off. That said, I love Crash Course and look forward to watching the rest of this series soon!

Joshua Meltzer I have seen Crash Course History go back and edit errors such as these. It would be nice if they would amend the video with errors so glaring. The number of amendments is pretty basic and often referenced, it should be corrected. California, being the most populous state, is always referenced all the time and should have the correct number of reps mentioned!

The Bicameral Congress A form of government where important decisions are made by two herds of camels. Some of the camels are stubborn as mules and the others leave a lot of shit. The camels are guided by their handlers and their owners, the lobbyists and the sponsors. From time to time there is a beauty pegant, where the people can vote for the most handsome camel.

I love that crash course is delegating (more content), since John and Hank must be quite busy, BUTT, it brings us to the similar problem why CGP Grey doesn't do it, the possibility of a decrease in quality. I'm not saying Mr. Benzine is doing a bad job, well it's a big project with hardworking script writers, producers and editors and such, yet I have to say he is quite distracting, I really like him as comedian/host, but I mean, Hank is not easily replaced. Real Hank Green, please show up, please show up.

Late one night a robber wearing a mask stopped a well-dressed man and stuck a gun in his ribs. "Give me your money," he demanded. Scandalized, the man replied, "You can’t do this - I’m a US Congressman!" "Oh! In that case," smiled the robber, "Give me MY money!"

+TheNeveFringe 2 months late but whatever - the TL;DR of it is that we have two different 'houses', that is to say, two different groups of people (just like yours, with your House of Lords and House of Commons). All states have 2 senators (people to represent them in the Senate), and states get proportional representation (more people = more representatives) in the House of Representatives.

Great initiative! I have a couple of concerns which I hope will represent useful feedback for you: 1. Is this going to be an extremely US-centric series? As a non-US watcher I don't mind learning a bit about US politics or having them used as an example, however if all we're going to do is just talk about the US government, with no international range, then I'll have to pass on this series. 2. I personally enjoy the humor in this series, however especially in sections where you're quoting text I think it would be a good idea to tune it down a notch. Those texts are as is already quite heavy and hard to follow, having them read to you with a silly accent makes them virtually impossible to understand. Reading them in a helpful way, with intonation meant to communicate which segments are of particular importance, would result in a much more efficient method of delivery, for me at least. Best of luck!

1. This isn't Crash Course Government and Politics, it's specifically Crash Course US Government and Politics. As another non-American, I find it interesting to learn about, so I will be watching it. Though I would really appreciate something similar for a few other countries. 2. Honestly, I've found the humour in this series really…well, bad. I like the content, but I'm not a fan of the delivery at all.
