Back to the Evanston Wyoming Roundhouse to check on progress with the restoration of the shops. The Big Boy will be laid over here for 2 days on the trip down.
They have been working on the shop roundhouse and depot for years and the hope was it would all be "finished" for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike. Almost! They are working RIGHT NOW to get more finished. The roundhouse is still missing much of it's concrete floor and several of its huge locomotive doors. However, its looking amazing!!! And in a few days when the train arrives??.. Who knows!
Evanston’s Historic Roundhouse & Railyards were constructed in 1912-1914 by Union Pacific Railroad and features one of the last intact roundhouses on the UPRR line. In 2009, the city was able to refurbish the first of four sections of the Round-house as a public facility. The bi-level structure includes a spacious gallery, un upper level lounge, three small boardrooms and/or one large classroom. It also contains an elevator and two kitchenettes. Roundhouse Section One can easily accommodate up to 1,300 conference attendees and exhibitors. With a state-of-the-art audio/visual system, stages and podiums, banquet tables and chairs, the facility is fully equipped to host events of nearly any size. Across the plaza is the Machine Shop (renovated in 2004), a 17,000 sq. ft. building with a catering kitchen. The Roundhouse & Machine Shop can be rented together or separately. In addition, the community has an ample selection of caterers available to service such occasions. The City of Evanston proposes a minimal flat fee charge for the use of the facility. Reservations must be made as soon as possible, as the facility is used frequently throughout the year, especially during the summer months.
From their web site:
The Roundhouse gallery/ballroom can hold up to 900 attendees. The Portland Rose Classroom can accommodate 115 guests. Three small boardrooms can be sectioned off and each can hold 21 guests. The Upper Mezzanine Area can be used as classroom space, as well, and holds a capacity of 200.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Pacific Railroad" and later as the "Overland Route") was a 1,912-mile (3,077 km) continuous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 that connected the existing eastern U.S. rail network at Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa with the Pacific coast at the Oakland Long Wharf on San Francisco Bay. The rail line was built by three private companies over public lands provided by extensive US land grants. Construction was financed by both state and US government subsidy bonds as well as by company issued mortgage bonds. The Western Pacific Railroad Company built 132 mi (212 km) of track from Oakland/Alameda to Sacramento, California. The Central Pacific Railroad Company of California (CPRR) constructed 690 mi (1,110 km) eastward from Sacramento to Promontory Summit, Utah Territory. The Union Pacific built 1,085 mi (1,746 km) from the road's eastern terminus at Council Bluffs near Omaha, Nebraska westward to Promontory Summit.

On their first test run Thursday, it sounds like they were having some issues with the front cylinder rod packing joints leaking excessively, so they headed back to Cheyenne early.

@@mdgfb05 That is probably why the diesel was in tow. It was the first test drive and problems were anticipated. I question if one diesel could have moved the Big Boy full of water very successfully.

The train back is huge. Sounds like a good idea. First car behind the locomotives has a water treatment system for the water tenders, a small boiler to help get a cold engine up to temperature and a basic machine shop. The next car has some storage for crowd control like railings and platforms but mostly several bed rooms for the crew on the road. Those two cars stay with the locomotives at all times.

Honda Element, Is that what I see in the windows. A car Aimed at the Young and active lifestyle with many features to support that lifestyle built into the car. The problem... All those features from easy access etc. were and still are very popular with the older, old and Very old people. Those old people flocked to Honda and purchased many of the Honda Elements. Now for the young hip and cool crowed, what could be the un coolest thing about a new car? Old people loving that car more than the so called and young active lifestyle types aka as The intended target market.

Thanks for the video, you two. : ) Just so you know.... the crew left Cheyenne late for the break-in run due to numerous little things that kept popping up during the day that had to be dealt with.... and in the haste of getting the pistons, rods, crossheads, etc installed the other night... they messed up on the rod packing for Both front cylinders, and especially the right one (Ed's side) was losing excessive amounts of steam pressure by the time they even got to Speer..... it was 11pm before they made it to Nunn, CO... and the front cylinders were losing so much pressure that they cancelled the rest of the run to Greeley and had the trailing SD70AC (No.3967) tow them in reverse from Nunn, CO. back to the shop in Cheyenne. Fortunately it Was only a break-in run... so they were not "working" the 4014 and were running "light" on the throttle, as the SD70 was providing most of the the motivation and the 4014 was under steam pressure just to keep the lubricators and everything working while they were breaking-in all the moving parts and checking the side rod bearings, etc, etc for temperatures and making sure nothing was running excessively hot. See Ya's in Ogden!!

See all that steam constantly coming from the front pistons? That's a leak in the cylinder packing. It's an easy fix, and one of the only problems they had. That's why you take something of this magnitude for a test run! Gotta work out those kinks. For something this big, you would expect a few hitches, but for something as small as that to be one of the only issues, that really speaks for the craftsmanship of the UP Steam Team. They really did great! Cutting it close, though! Phew!

Whoever prepared it for display really did it right!! Usually those things were just stuck in a park. No prep of any kind. At best drained the tender. But often they were half full of water, tender and boiler. And the boiler not cleaned out. Water leg a foot deep in lime and mud and water. And they rust from the inside out. The jacket was pulled off this little guy, probably to get rid of asbestos. And the boiler is great. The bottom of the water leg perfect. I’ll bet it was kept in good working order, clean and well oiled right to the end of service. Then drained and closed up for storage. Then retired and put in the park

Actually they did run into a problem the piston packing for the forward engine is leaking excessively but it's not a major problem. I have to wonder if the customer who hired the challenger to pull a double stack train of his first shipment might request the big boy to haul his train again. I'm sure the UP has plans to haul freight with her. The UP has already gotten more advertising value than they ever could have dreamed.

I remember as a kid going to the LA County Fair and playing on 4014 I remember asking my mom if it would ever run again and she said no. I climbed (with help) into the cab and looking at all the knobs and wondering what each one was for (they where all welded so young kids like me couldn't play with them. I didn't like that.) But, I hoped it would run again some day. Some 15 years ago my wife and I went to the fair and we got to see Big Boy. A little worse for wear, but still just as massive. I still had that dream of seeing him run again. Then, when UP bargained for him, I knew Big Boy would ride again. Then, I just wanted to live long enough to see it! HA! Some dreams do come true. Thanks guys for all the updates you've provided over the years. I can't wait to see what you show us on May 9. See you then!

Not for a big boy. I don’t think. But the plan is to perhaps have one or two small locomotives inside and mostly convention space. And shops? Restaurant? Don’t know.

Excuse me there is a lot of problems with the front engine unit steam is seeping out around the Piston rod and you can't even hear the big boy chug because they're not putting a lot of pressure to the cylinders I'd say that's a big problem

Haven’t spoken to Ed yet about it. He’s really busy. But yes. Packing problem in the front cylinders. But as I say, they were installed hours before the run south.

Hey folks, nice video of the roundhouse. It’s really great to see the restoration of this great piece of history coming along. It helps mellow the sadness of other lost train related structures and equipment. I spent a good part of yesterday watching big boy on KZbin. Looking forward to seeing your post tomorrow. Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍😎😎😎 Cary

It was amazing today. Some video of that Sunday and the following Sunday. Tomorrow is the big show with the big boy at the Ogden depot. They are giving him a bath and manicure as we speak.

Ed told me he just ran out of time. Not the piston packing at all. Still running with the leek. No problem really. It just got to late as they were keeping it to under 30 and usually less. And the plan was to run backwards all along. Hard in the best of times to wye a centipede. So they intended to pull the big boy backwards to help the break in. Good to but reverse load on it as you break in. So when they were at risk of going off the clock they just stuck it in reverse.

That question has an easy answer... via another question... What is bigger than a Northern, and smaller than a Big Boy? One, 4-6-6-4 Challenger locomotive, number 3985... Since she and Big Boy share many parts, those are already made and waiting. I'm thinking, two years from now (my timeline) we should see the three sisters out and about systemwide.
