Defense companies secure billions of dollars every year from government contracts to maintain and construct nuclear weapons. The Congressional Budget Office projects that the U.S. government could spend $634 billion between 2021-2030 on nuclear forces. Many of these companies like Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon have seen a rise in stock prices amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Watch the video above to learn about the companies profiting off of nuclear weapons and how the investor community feels about it.

What a lack of imagination. Only a handful of countries have nukes, and some countries have willingly given up their nuclear weapons programs, Ukraine, Iran, etc. And in fact, the number of active weapons has diminished from 70k in the 80's to less than 4k active warheads today. So yes, the cat can be put back in the bag if there is a will to do it.

@@patricialongo5746 The point is that for peace to be lasting, there has to be parity between the likely combatants. For example, you could have two people of equal size and strength with just their fists which makes a fight less likely because the match is even but imagine that one of those people has increased their muscle mass and has been trained by an MMA fighter and the other hasn't. One person has an advantage which they're likely to use because they can and have a good chance at winning. The phrase 'Don't bring a knife to a gun-fight' highlights the point well.

Although i'm portuguese, the prople who doesn't understand the necessity of the US and other western countries to have updated nuclear weapons, should start to go say to the russians and chinese they should dispose of theirs. Although i also want peace and don't intend to die because of a nuclear exchange. The only way to guarantee the freedom of the west and Russia and China simply don't do to who ever their leaders consider, the same as Russia is doing to Ukrain, is by having a deterrence wich maintains those powers in check. Who doesn't understand this should be living in conquered part of Ukrain. I find it hilarious that those people only protest on their countries in which their way of life (and roght to protest) is protected by those very weapons, and only ask the disarmament of their own countries. Pathetic naive...

@@jont2576 You are correct that almost every major military conflict in recorded history was preceded by a period of armament and stretegic placement of the necessary resources to wage war. The United States averages a major military conflict once every twenty years when viewed over the entire history of the nation. These things are true however it is also true that we are currently enjoying the longest period of global peace in over 100 years... if it werent for the US's military dominance and stretegic partnerships like NATO this simply would not be possible. I do not believe there is a place for stretegic nuclear weapons in military conflict or global politics, these weapons have the potential to have devistating consiquences for the entire world regardless of who fires first but the reality is multiple nations on opposing sides of the coin have these weapons and convincing either side to dismantle them is about as futile as the story of the fox and the scorpion...

There is a problem with this reporting. Not all companies making nuclear weapons listed in 4:06 to 4:09 are private. For example, Bharat Dynamics(An Indian company which produces ammunitions & missile systems) is owned by the Indian Government. It's like the old saying goes: If you want peace, prepare for war. Having nuclear weapons is the ultimate insurance policy against attack and to avoid attack, conventional or nuclear, you've got to be strong or appear to be strong to deter such an attack. The only way the system works is if we all have nukes or no-one has nukes. It's not the fault of defence contractors either. If governments didn't want nukes, there wouldn't be an industrial complex to supply them. To end any trade whether ethical or not, you've got to eliminate the market for it.

@@jarednovel Any wrong move by the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, North Korea, Israel, India or Pakistan could cause a nuclear war since they all have nuclear weapons. No-one is safe without nuclear weapons either. If it wasn't nuclear weapons it would be chemical, biological or just more potent conventional weapons. Bear in mind that we humans have been perfecting the art of killing each other as efficiently as possible for thousands of years and we've become very good at it hence the nukes. Also bear in mind that there haven't been any world wars or really any major wars since they were devised. They've kept the peace since World War 2 because everyone knows that World War 3 will be fought with nukes and no-one will dare use them because of the MAD principle. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have a world without them but as long as one nation has them, so must we all to maintain the peace.

@@AdSd100 @Compass Rose has flawed logic, countries with more weapons don’t have less crime. A lock is something only used for protection, weapons and certainly those of mass destruction are not! Since the US were the first create nuclear weapons they used them twice in battle (against Japan at the end of WW2) afterwards they made them stronger so that other nations wouldn’t try to bomb them. But they have since then not considered to initiate an attack. A peaceful democracy (although very flawed and it remains to be seen to stay that way) is very unlikely to use it, unless (they or a close ally were) attacked by another nation in this way. Still not great of course) especially considering the fact that a president gone mad can order something like this but hopefully people would just not carry out his orders) and many people (probably at least half the Americans but possibly many more) want them gone but it’s hard to do so when other nations like Russia and North Korea have them and would possibly start an attack if the US didn’t have stockpiles of nuclear warheads. Besides the fact that no country should want this and all countries should want the countries that do have them to reduce their stockpiles to 0, Iran is not a super free democratic nation and has the potential to be the ones to use it if threatened with something not a nuclear attack (that’s extremely bad!!) Look up simulations of nuclear war and you will see why this is humanity’s biggest nightmare.

Most people want to live in a peaceful world absent of war. Unfortunately, history has taught us that peace is not the default. Our world is currently experiencing an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity. I believe that this peace and prosperity have created a generation of people who have become complacent and ignorant of the very real threats that our world faces. There have always been and will always be bad actors and power-hungry rulers that will seek conquest. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has made many of us realize that peace is not a given. There are world leaders and aspiring leaders that would if they thought they could, attack and invade the US and its allies. It's easy and progressive sounding to repeat empty platitudes about peace, but the realities and complexities of the world tell a different story. Theodore Roosevelt once wisely said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Halting US weapons productions will not stop Russia and China from advancing and improving their weapons.

I think the opposition to the US defense budget comes from the fact the the US public has been lied to multiple times for the US to go to war like in Iraq. Its the fault of the US institutions for the lack of trust.

My instinct makes me feel repulsion for those companies and the governments investing such amount of money on the worst invention humanity has created, but then I realize that there’s just no choice, bad guys love nuclear weapons to intimidate their enemies, so the other guys, not good btw, have to have them too, and they are expensive to create and to maintain, so money has to be spent. That’s why the world sucks.

Maybe US doesn't need to have armed forces 10 times the strength of the second strongest? If history have proven anything it's that overwhelming military strength will lead to war, not peace. Rather the right strength is slightly less than an enemy, but where the advantages of fighting a defensive war will create an advantage big enough to make the hostile nation think twice before attacking. This way both nations will feel safe and instead of increased military spending we could see them decrease.
