Our son is still in Kharkiv and volunteering to work with emergency services. Mostly delivering aid. I have worked with auto wiring harness suppliers before.. they are impossible to automate and entirely dependant on manual operators. This makes it very difficult to "shift production" to another location/company as you need alot of time (couple of months to a year) just to train new workers to make the part fast enough (reaching the required cycle time), even if you have all toolings and machines ready and set up. Such an intense labor production would also mean hiring of willing workers is very crucial, quite a number of workers quit because of the low pay and they could find better less complicated job (such as being a cashier for example) elsewhere. This really affects the company's workforce and continued production.

That was one point in this video; that Ukraine makes about 7% of wire harnesses that goes into European vehicles -> 4:42 (so about every 100 wire harnesses Europe buys, about 7 comes from Ukraine, so now you have 93 out of the 100 you used to have. That only applies if none comes through from Ukraine anymore, not that much of a loss to be honest) If that was your only takeaway, I think you missed the bigger part of this video -> Raw Materials ( 9:13 ) Your country either has natural resources or it doesn't. If you missed it -> Russia owns 43% of the world's palladium, followed by South Africa with 34% (Together 77%). And if you didn't notice, the South African government voted to abstain in all of the UN votes on Ukraine. Major reason for that was because it's a BRICS nation (other BRICS nations tended to do the same). Well. This will be impulse to re-design cars! Since long time I point to fact wire harness is most vulnerable part of modern car. 1)24V can be used instead of 12V. This reduces current and reduced weight of most wired and connectors. 24V components are available off the shelf - trucks use them. If done right , up to 48V system can be used. 24V is most reasonable for short term though. 2)most wires are obsolete. Wireless technology allows great simplification of the harness, with only power and ground needed plus few critical safety wires for systems like airbags. It also removes thousands of plugs, sockets etc. last but not least it simplifies diagnostics.

Well we say only 10%, but that by logic can mean then that roughly ‘one in every ten people’ could be affected or ‘spread that out over 10 people’. So in the end that is actually quite a lot. It’s not half, but on average that is still quite a large number.

I don't disagree with the environmental reasons for converters in ordinary times, but these are not ordinary times. No excuse for price hikes on steel in the US. We have so much scrap that if we start our own foundries again we would be fine.

Develop the mines in Canada that the bean counters have prohibited so far because of higher wage costs. It is a fact that Canada has several un-developed ore bodies, not being developed because of wage costs here. For the safety of the world, this has to be fixed like yesterday...

it's price fixing, create a shortage of any product and it is ok to jack up price.

Your theory doesn't make sense. Companies feel no need to justify higher prices. If people are willing to pay more, they'll unapologetically charge it. If people can't pay more, then they're just going to be selling fewer cars and making less money.
