I did the same thing only it was so my buddy who could play drums would have a set and a place to play them, as he had neither lol. Unintended side effect was I taught myself how to play, seeing as how they were setup and just sitting there and the person I bought them to play on was flakey

I’m a 67 year old Akron native. I knew this band’s name and they were homeys but never took time to hear them. Just figured, how good could it be, you know? My son got us tickets to the Turn Blue tour performance in Gund Arena, so I had about a 3 month wait and started listening and buying their vinyl, backwards till I had everything. I was floored how good these fellas are and by the time the show happened, I knew all their music. The show was one of the best I’ve ever seen. And I go back to The Concert for Bangladesh, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, The Who playing Tommy with James Taylor and The James Gang openers. Thanks, son!

When I first heard them, I thought they were ripping off the White Stripes. Then, they put out "Attack and Release" with Danger Mouse and was like "hmmm, this is interesting. Good stuff". So I went back and listened to the old stuff and realized I had been wrong. Though rooted in the blues, they always had their own thing. Great band all around. Long live the Black Keys.

What amazes me is that they keep coming out with great music. I love bands that never stop producing great music. Most bands had a time they were great and live off of those songs for ever. It's rare that greatness can continue this long. So many great songs.

I was lucky enough to work as a stagehand directly under their stage manager when they played The Bradley Center (RIP) in Milwaukee in September, 2014. Got to meet the whole band and crew, everyone was friendly and down to earth. One of the most memorable concerts I've worked.

Pro tip if you're serious about becoming a professional musician: search for all the interviews and podcasts where The Black Keys talk about the music industry and pay close attention. Here are my takeaways: 1/ Don't sign with a major label right away, and resist it as long as you can. Make your own records and maintain creative control. 2/ Don't settle for anything less than a great booking agent. 3/ Don't listen to people who call you a "sellout" for licensing your music; those people aren't fans. The money licensing provides can keep your band alive and gives you more options and freedom. 4/ Don't stop touring. Understand the tiers of touring success. Venues: 1 to 100, 100 to 1,000, 1,000 to 10,000, 10,000 to 100,000. 5/ Own your own masters if possible (this is the hardest one). Ties into Rule #1. 6/ Avoid digital bundling, which disadvantages the artist.

My favorite band for a few years now and excited to know what the future will bring as far as their albums. These guys are the real deal, as a band as as individual solo musicians. I first heard the Black Keys on 103.9 the X in San Bernardino. I was a frequent customer of Radio Shack and when I strolled in to make a purchase they had the Black Keys CD on the counter staring at me. I felt so lucky and grabbed one. Love their music.

I had a radio show at a community college in Pennsylvania. One day I saw "The Big Come Up" sitting on top of a stack of other CDs. The description said "Two-piece white-boy blues." I took it home, listened to it with my girlfriend. It was the absolute greatest thing we'd ever heard at the time, and quickly became the soundtrack to our lives throughout college... Thickfreakness, Rubber Factory and Magic potion are some of the rawest rock albums our generation has to offer. Although it all sounded the same, and they weren't really progressing with their music. Brothers changed it up a bit and I never would have found them without it. El Camino was their biggest let down for me and this is probably what people are talking about when they talk about the band "selling out." But Turn Blue was a great attempt at experimenting with their sound and has me anxious to see what's next for them.

I remember hearing a Jack White interview when these guys started getting big. He was whining about how they totally ripped off The White Stripes. Dude is an amazing guitarist but is a total crybaby sometimes. He acted like he invented the stripped down blues and drums sound. That sound is as old as blues based music. There is plenty of room for the both of you to exist.

Uhhhh, Jack White did invent that sound. A drummer and a guitarist. Louder sounding blues. The drummer of the Keys was even ripping off meg white style drumming. And the name Black Keys (vs White Stripes)?? They came out like 2 years after the white stripes. It's pretty obvious they were not only influenced by... but completely were doing the exact same thing. (and on that note, I knew a couple bands during that time personally that were doing the same thing. They also claimed they weren't ripping off the white stripes).

Also the guitar sound... using vintage silvertone guitars... using an octave pedal. The whole thing is a complete ripoff. I like the black keys, but to pretend it's not a complete white stripes ripoff is turning away from what obviously happened.

Jack White did NOT invent that sound or the idea of a 2 piece guitar/drums band. What are you 12? Learn some music history. Jack White, like most white musicians, ripped off the sound from old blues music. Even Jack White acknowledges that he stole from a lot of blues artists. And the real irony of White's snarking - and yours - is the The Black Keys had never even heard of the White Stripes until after they started touring. And Jack White had to apologize for his comments because he knew he was talking out of his ass. They could hardly copy something they didn't even know about. If you ever listened to Dan and Pat expand upon the band's origins you'd know they were only a 2-piece because the other guys Dan invited to play with them never showed up. Later, after they got a record contract, they tried to add other musicians so they could be a proper "band" but none of them could follow along with what Dan and Pat were doing so they ended up playing as a duo.

So if you got the opportunity like scholarship etc, stick to education. Look at Weezer, they are harvard graduate musicians who champion the 'nerd rock' genre that not a lot of bands could emuluate.

Saw Black Keys for first time at ACL Fest in 2003ish?? Student newspaper A&E editor UT-San Antonio "The Paisano" . wow, i actually remember that Rolling Stone review, it was why i first bought a Black Keys album i was traveling in cambodia and the guest house i was in had an old copy of Rolling Stone and i read that review, had never heard of them before, and the next time i saw one of their CDs for sale i remembered it and bought it and did not regret it, interesting to hear it was important to them too

Nice job, love this band, first heard them on Sirius on a long drive to Northern Manitoba. We saw them play a show at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, the entire audience was on their feet and dancing for the whole show. The most fun I've ever had at a concert!

Saw them a Amoeba Records in Hollywood- free show when they were promoting Magic Potion, didn't really know much about them just buzz, bought the CD and they autographed it. Later went back and purchased EVERY one of the their CD and some vinyl. Now a fan forever. They have gone fromfantastic to greater and greater.

Like so many bands I heard John Peel playing some tracks from TBCU and I went out and bought it in my local independent record store and saw them live in a venue with about 150 people, same with The White Stripes, then as each album came out the venues got bigger. It's nice to get in on the ground floor, or if not ground first, I really miss John Peel.

I first heard of them in 2005. Ish. Just Got To Be. Amazing song!. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I bought some albums though, but I was hooked. I f*cking love these guys still.

I did not know anything about them until rubber factory, cannot believe it's been that long ago. Very cool story and I very much like when they include the parents and these pieces. These guys did it their way and that's awesome.
