At the start of the year I resolved to tidy out the lovely big haberdashery cupboard that you may have seen in the background of many of my videos. It's going to take a l-o-n-g time, so I will make a series and post them from time to time so you don't get overwhelmed by tidying videos!

I love your cabinet. It’s like sitting with a friend and watching them sort through their things. Hearing the stories and absorbing the stories is a privilege. On Star Trek, The Next Generation there was an episode which spoke of the worth of stories to others and your podcast is a reminder of how privileged we are to hear your stories. Thank you.

"..... all that day you'll have a pin.... " I laughed out loud. There's a pin cushion in every room here because I sew, and mend and quilt and make lace. That means there are pins everywhere.

This was totally delightful! I fekt right at home with you as you sorted thru your amazing drawer cabinet, Kate. It felt like "old times" befire COVID when a dear friend and I would spend time together helping eachother to sort thru our closets, cupboards, garages, etc., to make the job less heinous. My, what a grand piece of furniture that cabinet of yours is: just 20 pounds?!? I love it!! Anyway, nothing you do could bore any of your fans, I'm sure, nor could your videos ever be too long. We adore you!

I think I know what the three balls are...are they surprise balls? I’ve made them for my grandsons at Halloween. Tons of white crepe paper rolled up with treats and prizes. I put googly eyes on them and they looked like wrapped mummies! The boys had great fun unwrapping with candies and toys spilling out!

I always heard "See a pin, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck." Now I hear your version, which is more practical -- "All the day you'll have a pin." Funny! I remember when my Mom was cleaning house, at the end of the day she would have several straight pins and safety pins on her shirt. Nice memory.

You should have a bin for each of your children to give them back those little treasures they made for you. Like a little legacy of memories of them to them. Write something in that little book. I have gone to thrift stores and bought men's ties to make into special pillows. A little bit of glam to those in hospital, nursing homes and hospice. Love material.

@@thelasthomelyhouse It IS a perfect idea, Kate. After my divorce, I ended up being "the keeper of the photos". Well, one day I was sorting and got the brilliant idea to part with most of the photos. I went to the dollar store and bought 3 shoe box sized gift boxes, sat in the middle of my living room floor and started distributing pictures accordingly. My two girls and my ex were thrilled. It was close to Christmas so I put a bow on the boxes and Bob's your uncle!! (Actually he was my ex but that's another story!!) (I can't understand though, why none of the three wanted mine and Dad's wedding album! It was cute even if it was defunct! LOLOL)

Your cabinet is beautiful. Maybe give each drawer a number. Then you can put all the numbers in one of your beautiful hand made bowls or cups and draw a number. Now that’s the drawer you clean today. I have been watching a program on Netflicks (sp?). It is a Japanese woman named Marie. She helps you to de-clutter your home with different techniques. You hold something in your hands and if you do not have a spark of joy you get rid of whatever it is. Such as you are doing. She also shows you how to re-organize everything you keep. The items you want to sell could possibly be freebies included in other orders. Good luck with your cupboard. It is lovely.

For Daisy it was her first introduction to Norma and she felt an immediate kinship as she too loves to walk around on tables and be the center of the screen. I enjoyed your thought process on what goes, what stays...and the fact that you got through 2 drawers without giving up. I always feel so overwhelmed with the sorting process. If what you have is exactly what someone needs, then they may choose to pay the price. I run an online shop on Etsy and people often pay $4 shipping for a $5 item. Because I have what they need. I hate charging $4 but I have to have tracking because to many packages were disappearing in the post.

I love that cabinet. I’ve looked at them on eBay and they are so expensive! I’ve just had a think back and I remember that I started a new job in 1979 and I was earning £29 a week. I’m going to look at eBay again 😁 very dangerous! Last year I bought an architect’s plan chest but it was in Canterbury. I drove all the way there to collect it. The man who sold it said it wouldn’t fit in my car but I told him it would if his dimensions were correct and it did with a centimetre to spare. It had a thick dark oak varnish on it and I decided to pay to have it French polished, it turned out to be solid teak and probably from the 1930s. It’s lovely and a bargain. Mind I’ve had to buy a new car! Thanks as always.

It is a great chest. Your plan is good. Just do a little at a time and pretty soon it’s done. I love seeing what others collect over the years. You are such an interesting person. I love hearing any of your stories.

Hi Kate, I'm so glad that I found your channel by accident some dass ago. I searched for some ideas for scraps as I regularly do, but this time your pink/red quilt showed up and caught me. I watched some of your videos since then and I really like them. Hearing you talking, looking at all the craft supplies and hearing your dialect is great (I'm German and love hearing different kinds of English, especially "British English"). All the best, Stephanie PS: Just subscribed for future videos 😉

Hi Kate, Happy New Year to you. I too am enjoying a beautiful sunny, but cold, day here in Halifax, Canada. My ears and eyes perked up when I saw your hand made re-purposed paper bags. Here in our province we are trying very hard to reduce plastic, including plastic rubbish bags and these paper bags would be great for small businesses who don't need to use plastic to wrap purchases and have the time and enthusiasm to turn newsprint into bags. Perhaps you might add a video on how to make these bags to your list of possible you tube videos in your little black book. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

OK - I will add it to the book - they are so easy - when you get into a rhythm you can make lots - and YES!!! we MUST reduce single use plastic!!!! xxxxx

I am in the process of doing exactly the same thing, but in my case it's plastic drawers on rollers ,of which I have many. I have been crafting all my life as well, and have so much " stuff". You should sell some of your " stuff" in your shop, but don't ship things in boxes, it will drive up your postage like mad. Those little flowers...I use those and buy them on line, they just come in a padded envelope, so postage is not much. Oh my gosh you are so like me, I feel like I am cleaning out your cabinet! The pink and black fabric would be a darling doll quilt. I had several boxes for recycle shop, and yesterday I decided to make some wire heart sun catchers...don't you know I went into those boxes and hauled out a bunch of jewelry bits and bobs and used them on my sun catchers... So much for purging my " stuff" 😏 Dale from Canada

Dale - you hit the nail on the head! when I want to make 'something' ... anything - I can always find exactly what i need in my stores - it's rather marvellous - so the skill is in knowing what you can let go of because you know you will never do that craft or make that thing again - but ... never say never!!! xxxx

Oh I have those bits and bobs too! Having moved so many times in my adult life I prob. don't have as much as you but I always laugh when I go through them and wonder why I kept certain things, other things bring on a memory and some "spark joy" as Marie Kondo would say! Keep forgetting to check out your Patreon page - will do that soon! I've many winter projects going on and limit my internet time lately! Did enjoy this little visit though! Blessings!

I absolutely love your cabinet! I just subscribed to your channel, so I hadn’t seen the cabinet before. As I recall, department stores used cabinets like yours for bras and slips. They had them behind a counter, and the customers clearly were NOT to help themselves. Brings back memories of our small town. Our little department store had 2.5 floors, and had an elevator WITH an attendant! In the “mezzanine”, between floors they sold Boy Scout, Girl Scout, and Campfire uniforms and accessories for all including shoes and socks! Memories...

Oh Kate, I broke myself laughed. My neighbor certainly thought I was spearting a bit. One flies here, the other there. I think it's so nice that everything has a story. And a whole cupboard for £20? That's just crazy after all. I just love such pieces of furniture. I have a really very wide and large one in the bedroom, where I also store all my sewing things and fabrics. However, it has cost much more than yours. It doesn't have an inch of free space there. I believe minimalism is not exactly our area of expertise. And please do the other drawers. I could have watched for three hours. Greetings Claudia

@@thelasthomelyhouse There is a lady who does quilting, etc. KZbin videos and her name is Jean Truelove. She is a hoot. Very down to earth, like you. AND has had 10 kids!!! The first time I saw her she said "if any of you are minimalists, step away NOW!" Her home is sooooo full of all her treasures and creations, it's amazing. There isn't an inch to spare. You're quite conservative compared to her!! LOL You would really enjoy her.
