I gotta hand it to the plot for being relentlessly determined. If the Dude tries to go along with any of it, things go sideways. If the Dude tries to ignore or resist it, things still go sideways. Screw it. Let’s go bowling.

An observation upon repeated viewings: When Walter tries to commit Donnie's ashes to the water, the wind blows them into the air. Even in death, Donnie was out of his element.

The way the Dude just kinda frowns as the ashes come his way. He knows there is no avoiding it, so he resigns himself. It's a fantastic moment.

"Eventually she’ll get tired of her little game and wander on back." Which is exactly what happens. I love absolutely everything about this movie. For me, it’s the recurring jokes. From personal observation, there are 4 scenes in which "Where’s the money ?" Is spoken. Three of which "Where’s the money, Lebowski" is said, and not by the same people. The rug really tied the room together is repeated several tImes. And one of my favorites is the beaver/vagina, sex/coitus conversation between Maude and The Dude.

One of the best things about this film is that it's a Greek tragedy disguised as a Dashiell Hammett detective story dressed up as a nihilistic comedy. A Greek tragedy has a death (Donnie), a birth (implied by Maude's 'little Lebowski') and a chorus who addresses the audience in the beginning, the hero in the middle, then the hero followed by the audience at the end (The Stranger). I told my Theatre history professor my theory many years ago and he suggested that I might have been high when I came up with it (I had been). My vindication came years later when the Cohen Brothers released "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (The Odyssey)

It was written in the style of, and as a nod to Raymond Chandler (The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye, Farewell My Lovely, etc.). The Coen Bros. admit this.

Whenever the dude has a line of dialog in this movie there is a non zero chance that it was a line fed to him in an earlier scene... I keep finding more examples of this subtle nuance finessed into this script every time I rewatch it

My favorite character is the cowboy who doesn't drink or curse. I also love how for a crime movie, there's no actual threat. The main villain is a modern-day Wizard of Oz living in a palace he doesn't even own, the "violent criminals" everyone's afraid of are washed-up bohemians who've never been in a fight before, and Treehorn - the only person with actual power - is running after the money in all the places it isn't.

Glad you enjoyed this one! The Big Lebowski is a noir movie disguised as a comedy. It has all the elements: a crime gone wrong, a good man who's drawn into an underworld where everyone is trying to double-cross everyone else, a femme fatale. . . This movie only gets funnier with repeated viewings. It's easy to miss some of the details the first time you watch it, and knowing the characters makes things even more ridiculous. So this was only the third Coen Brothers movie you've seen? May I suggest: - Fargo (the movie, not the TV series, though the series is very good) - No Country for Old Men - Raising Arizona - True Grit (the Coen Brothers version from 2010, not the John Wayne movie from 1969) - Blood Simple

That’s another thing I noticed about this movie. No matter who it is, with the exception of The Cowboy, Brandt and Donny, everyone has their own hidden personal agenda or motive.

We *never* see The Dude bowl - it struck me on my 3rd viewing. (Kinda, almost, in a dream bit, but not quite.) I can't even _picture_ The Dude bowling in my mind. Kooky.

I think this is one of my favourite movies :) I love how basically the Dude wants nothing to do with this elaborate plot going on.. but it keeps on interfering with his life :) Its great you had a hoot watching it :) The Coen Brothers are something else :D

So many people find the movie hard to decipher plotwise because they don't listen to the Greek Chorus at the beginning "drifting along like a tumblin' tumbleweed."

I've seen this film dozens of times over the years and it has never failed me, I ALWAYS laugh, I usually catch some new clue or nuance in the script, and I remain duly impressed at the talent of the Coen's to, once again, craft a script so convoluted yet so simple that it is high science, pure art. There is an entire subculture now around The Dude (Dudeism) , it's all a joke and everyone is in on it but they're also serious about it. Abide.

That ashes joke was in Mel Brooks' LIFE STINKS before this film, based on something that actually happened to a friend of his.

Did you see the dude in the news a week or 2 ago who stole a semi - his name is Lubowski, with a 'U' , and I needed to do a double-take! The Coen Bros. wrote this screenplay in the style of Raymond Chandler, 1940s L.A. private eye paperback novels. I inherited a few of them (The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye, Farewell My Lovely) from my grandfather and would read graphic portions aloud to my friends in Jr. High - Hilarious! That narrator is the one and only Sam Elliott. He starred with his wife, Katherine Ross, in CONAGHER (1991), among his many film credits.

This movie is like taking the scenic route to a destination but deciding to come home because you simply enjoyed the ride. Some people don't enjoy this but others like myself thoroughly love the writing, acting, directing, etc. This truly earns its top cult classic comedic stature.

Fun Fact: With the exception of The Dude (Jeff Bridges) helping Maude (Julianne Moore) bowl in a fantasy, The Dude is never actually seen bowling once. The Real Dude Fact: A lot of the Dude's clothes in the movie were Jeff Bridges's own clothes, including his Jellies sandals, which he reportedly still owns and uses to this very day. Big Paraquat Fact: In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, John Goodman stated that The Dude (Jeff Bridges) referring to The Big Lebowski (David Hiddleston) as a "human paraquat" was one of the only improvised lines to make it into the final film. Virtually every other line was scripted.

Sam Elliott (the cowboy) is a favorite of mine. idk if you've seen Tombstone or Prancer, but I highly recommend both. Christmas is coming so you might want to add Prancer to your list. Sam's been acting since the 60s and is still going very strong.

I love the Coens; even if this is ~#5 give or take on my list of Coen movies it's still amazing, they just do so many wonderful and classic things...their handle of the camera, the landscapes they capture, their dialogue and offbeat characters, they rarely fail to build an awesome engrossing mood. Fargo, No Country, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink are some more great ones you haven't seen yet! They are modern masters.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's Brandt is my favorite part of this movie. So uptight and funny. The Coen brothers movies are very hit and miss for me. I love most of them but there are a few that no matter how many times I may see them just never work for me. My favorite of theirs is Burn After Reading (2008) which has an all star cast. I highly recommend it.

To be honest...I have seen this movie too many times...but for me, the key to really enjoying it is cannabis...the more cannabinoids and THC one can get into their system without passing out, the more I think folks tend to enjoy this movie. LOL
