Scott Steiner made his WWE return at Survivor Series 2002, getting a great reaction in the process. After deciding which brand he wanted to work on (Raw), Scott was immediately put in a main event feud with World Heavyweight Champion Triple H. Big Poppa Pump was elevated right to the top after becoming an official member of the Raw roster, but his matches with Triple H left a lot of people wondering why Steiner got pushed so quickly.
Triple H vs Scott Steiner took place at Royal Rumble 2003 and No Way Out 2003 and both matches failed to excite fans. The Royal Rumble match inparticular wasn't well received, and the build-up to the match also left fans scratching their heads as Steiner and HHH took part in bodybuilding contests, arm wrestling competitions and push up competitions. Scott Steiner's return certainly made fans excited but things went downhill rapidly when he began this rivalry with Triple H, and this video looks at everything that happened during the feud.

I am one of those who believe that had he been a heel and drafted to SmackDown!, he would have had a much better run. That roster was filled with cruiserweights, the show was taped and it was booked by a man famous for designing programs to enhance your strengths and hide your weaknesses. He should have been booked in mega squashes against Cruiserweights, then should have faced Rey Mysterio at Mania in a "Freakzilla Freakshow Match" or something, and from then on, if he got better, he could have been a transitional challenger for Brock.

He had no business being in the main event, he had health issues and alot of people who were there said he had gotten too big for his frame and because of that his mobility was garbage. He wasn't really an icon in his prime either, he was decent enough and had decent enough mic skills at best.... His best days were before he decided to start over doing the roids. Steiner at this stage is a natural heel. He didn't even have tweener charisma like Austin. He was just an unrelenting prick. I just watched wcw casually at the end, but could see Poppa Pump was a bona-fide superheel. Maybe as a face he could have gotten over against someone like Jericho, but Hunter was also in that superheel category. Too similar, Jericho is better as a heel but at his core he is a massive babyface. That will always shine through no matter the alignment. Steiner and Hhh will always be heels.

I never watched Scott Steiner in his peak but I watched some of his promos, matches and segments from late WCW, WWE and TNA and I really like him. The guy understood entertainment and made wrestling look real, by his acts and awesome promos. Triple H is not to blame here. Vince or WWE bookers should have done two things, letting Scott fully recover before putting him in any major storyline and also let him play a heel. They could have done a lot more with him
@jeremywilliams5141

Scott's 2003 return to WWE was in trouble from the start. He was battling injuries and clearly out of wrestling shape. This showed in his Royal Rumble match against Triple H. Plus, the Big Poppa Pump character works better as a heel as opposed to a babyface, at least in my opinion. And it didn't help that is return happened during the infamous Triple H reign of terror from 2002 to 2005. I think it's safe to say that is first run in WWF in 1993 was a little better than his second. At least in his first run, he was a tag team champion with his brother Rick and the two won their match at Wrestlemania IX. Sadly, it's one of two matches (Shawn Michaels vs Tatanka being the other) worth watching.

I think the fan reaction towards Steiner was clearly a territorial WCW vs WWF thing. The same thing happened with Goldberg, who came in as a face to defeat The Rock; fans were fine with him beating up mid carders but they didn’t want to see their WWF main event heroes to lose clean to a WCW star. The WWF had publicly told their fans for years to hate WCW so they were hardly going to suddenly take kindly to this. Sting was a bit different as it was so long after the WCW war finished, that fans started to look at the promotion differently and not see it as any threat (the WWE started to promote old WCW content too, acknowledging it was actually good!)

It's kind of like heel Brett getting cheered in Canada. HHH also trained in Boston. Steiner on the other hand is more well known for his work in NWA/WCW which were more predominant in the south so his northeast following at the time wasn't particularly big.

The matches had all sorts of interference and everything thrown in to make Scott’s job as easy as possible and he just couldn’t deliver. The fact he got a second title shot shows he wasn’t sabotaged, Trips prob could have demanded not to work with Scott after that first match and got his way given the influence he had at the time. Triple H has had his moments but this is toxic shade thrown by Scott for self preservation.

I agree. Although this was the reign of terror era, I think Triple H at this point was trying as he was looking for his next big rival. I think in his mind, if Evolution was going to be a success, he needed a top opponent. A Dusty to his Flair. With Rock making movies, Mick being part time, Austin about to retire, and Angle hitting it big on Smackdown, Triple H really had no one to go up against that was home grown. Hence why he spent so much of this era going up against other members of the Kliq and main eventers from WCW.
