20:55 - Yup, that's exactly what it was. I distinctly recall reading about two fans in MSG dressed in full Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage cosplay who stood up and started a pose-off during this match; obviously they got a bigger pop than the match itself, and if I remember right even the security guys who came by told them "that's funny as hell but the boss wants you to knock if off."

Reading his autobiography actually made me respect him more. He was unapologetic and completely honest. He mentioned Ric Flair and while he respected him, he also mentioned that he can’t be like Ric lacing up his boots at 60 years old. Brock philosophy was “to get in to get out”. Just straight business. He loves the fans and respects the business, but when he’s at home, he’s off the grid. While on the road, he’ll do the signings, interact with the fans, etc, but when he’s off, he’s off and wants to be with his family in peace. I’m sure we can all respect that. Also, him quitting during his first run was a must. Vince was running him ragged. He’s on the road working overtime doing house shows as well. He was constantly hurt and had to gulp down handfuls of Vicodin and washing it down with vodka. I’m happy he got out when he did because who knows what would’ve happened.

And because it worked out, because Brock is a beast who also takes care of himself, he's set an example, both for other wrestlers to know that they can and should take time off, and for promoters to allow and even advocate for time off for top stars, because Brock went away and came back, and fans still gave a damn about him.

When you consider what both guys were capable of, it was a huge disappointment. The fact that they were both on the outs at the time didn't help matters either. Austin giving them both a Stunner as a going away present getting the biggest pop of the match sums it all up.
@martynodonnell8467
@martynodonnell8467 2 жыл бұрын
To clarify, what do you mean “what they were both capable of”?. Goldberg got over in WCW, due to his undefeated streak, which was essentially a series of squash matches. His best matches came from when wrestlers such as DDP and The Rock carried him to decent matches. Lesnar, at the time, had his best matches against Angle and Eddie, which again he was carried too. I think the fans might have expected to much from this match, regardless and would have been disappointed regardless.

One of my favourite things about this match was how it was featured in _WWE 2K14's_ "30 Years Of WrestleMania" showcase mode essentially by default, because most of the other matches couldn't be done for various reasons (too many people involved, too redundant, guys being in other companies, Chris Benoit). Of course as a result, basically anything one did in that match short of just standing there would pretty much automatically make it a better match than the real thing was. Also including it meant Goldberg was in a wrestling video game for the first time since _Here Comes The Pain_ a decade earlier, which to me at least was a big deal and pretty major selling point at the time

It would have been interesting. However Goldberg can’t wrestle. He got his name through his run in WCW, which was a bunch of squash matches. His only decent matches, such as against DDP, came when he was carried to those matches. Lesnars best matches at the time came from wrestlers, such as Eddie and Angle, who were able to carry him. I’m not sure if I’d expect much, realistically from Goldberg VS Lesnar, except for a train wreck. It’s one of those ideas which looked better on paper, for the time.

If Brock and Goldberg decided to stay in WWE, then it must of meant that they were happy/not burnt out, so I'd assume they do much better. And the fans wouldn't turn on both because of them not leaving, so they would be more willing to follow along. My best guess is that this match would of been ok at best, because it still would of been a WWE Goldberg match, he's not meant for that.

It was dreadful, Lesnar had to stall to use up time because Goldberg can't wrestle for long without gassing and botching moves. It wasn't the 10-15 minute explosive match everyone expected, Austin being their helped as he drew away attention from the match at times. The weak link was Goldberg. Brock can wrestle, and have decently long matches. Goldberg never could.

Here comes the pain! And by that I mean the pain of having to sit through one of the most disappointing matches I can think of from a Wrestlemania. Sure I would say that there are worse matches, but considering the people involved in this (not just Lesnar and Goldberg but Austin as well) it was a huge letdown. Luckily Austin did provide some entertainment with the stunners at the end.

@@One.Zero.One101 that's ridiculous as back in Goldbergs prime he had crossover appeal and was larger than life. For fans to boo him, they don't like wrestling at all. Reason why Goldberg wasn't on the last shows before the PPV is he only had a certain amount of days left in his contract they asked him to work extra dates and he refused. (a running theme of his WWE run) Brock confirmed the middle fingers were to Vince not the fans (he deliberately does it to the Hard Camera for this very reason) I believe this was on Austin's podcast I feel like the beard was this as well as Vince didn't like him with a beard. They recently revealed it was originally gonna be a champion vs champion match. Bruce Prichard revealed on STW the reason Goldberg won was specifically because he was the face (despite people thinking he was tryna stick it to Brock for leaving out of nowhere as he was originally booked to win)

What killed this match was the leak that both men were leaving the company after the match. The fans were mad because they knew this was going to be one and done. I remember being pissed at the fans for ruining the match by mocking both guys the entire match. They 100% got in the heads of Brock and Goldberg and the two clearly decided while locking up to just finish the fight quick and go home. Their rematch years later made up for Wrestlemania XX. What made it good was the fact that for the first time people thought Goldberg didn't stand a chance due to his age. The way he won that encounter and the way Brock put him over was great and worked out in both guy's favor. I just wish Goldberg could get a proper rematch with Undertaker but that will sadly not happen.

I started to put it all together as I watched. as far as why Goldberg was not featured prominently in the final weeks leading up to WM, but instead focused on Brock and Austin. 1. Goldberg was a WCW original, Brock was a WWE original, and Austin was and is WWE's biggest superstar of all time. 2. they had already invested a lot into Brock Lesnar, so good TV and/or storylines were more ripe. 3. Having issues with HHH backstage never improved anybody's lives. So an angle was made that basically just put Stone Cold over, with Brock Lesnar, and screw Goldberg. lmao

Goldberg's matches in WCW had a formula and that formula worked and as a kid, GOldberg looked genuinely devastating with his moveset. In WWE as in many cases, Goldberg struggled to adapt to the WWE style along with booking during Triple H's Reign of Terror. Goldberg's biggest problem in my opinion is projection in that he complained of politics in WCW and WWE and employs the same politics he complained about in WWE, see his match with the Fiend for an example.

Neither man gave a damn about putting on a performance, everyone knew they were leaving, and they let both men have it.
