I think they are underselling the complexity of the film. The fact that it was so hard to understand was a sharp reminder of how the banks were taking advantage of people who didn't and the broken 4th wall moments were't just meant to help explain the film but also to show that people don't give a shit about something unless it is said by a celebrity in 140 characters or less. This film was surprisingly heartbreaking to me and I would hand it the Oscar for Best Picture if I could.

Truly I don't know anything about this stock market stuff.But after the movie, I get to know about the stock and how they cheated people.It also wins in telling an individual story through Steve Carell, Brad Pitt and the 2 guys who tries to convince media there is fraud but could not end them and end up being rich.

great movie. really gives you that feeling of being royally screwed by something out of your control and failed by the public officials that were supposed to prevent this from happening. I'd recommend this movie to anyone

Christian Bale was great in this. Actually everyone was. I agree with Alonso, they aimed high, but I'm not sure they succeeded totally. I couldn't explain to what happened to our economy exactly, but at least while I was watching the movie I followed well enough to go with the story. The banks really and truly fucked this whole country. Matt is right, it was infuriating.

I agree, it's definitely overused, but given the context of the movie, it actually kind of works here. "If it keeps on rainin', levee's gonna break" really describes what was going on with Wall Street at the time. It also helps that the original is a Depression-era song.

The Big Short is a masterpiece and I can't understand these low ratings. The camera work, using lots of long lenses, is amazing, and as they admit, the editing is top notch. It also has wonderful performances. And the story is compelling. What more do you want? Maybe, as they say, they didn't understand it?

@scratchfg2128 жыл бұрын
+Lou Cadle That movie was EXACTLY the counterpoint to this! More serious but less accurate. They forgot to show how those assholes at the banks started marking up their bonds (which are completely illiquid) to hide the fact that they were exploding from within, just before they dumped them out of their balance sheets (which they do show in the movie). They should have connected that scene at the end of both movies, with Christian Bale when the bitch from Goldman calls him to notify him that they would mark down the bonds he had bet against, once they had sold them off.

I'm well aware of Ben's appearances on TCM, but it doesn't really require enough effort to qualify as work. Also, I was sort of continuing the running joke among What the Flick? commenters that Ben does nothing. Honestly, he regularly shows up without haven't seen the films, and even when he's seen them, he sometimes can't remember them. This has been going on for years.

I wonder if this movie stresses that these transactions were legal then and for the most part are still legal? People won't get angry or know who to be angry at if they don't understand the legality of this over the individual ethics of doing these transactions.
@Couz898 жыл бұрын
+mc0325 it wasn't the transactions that were illegal it was the ratings that weren't accurate that was the fraudulent part. the ratings company just gave the banks whatever ratings they wanted otherwise they would go to the competition. This was explained really well in the scene with the lady with the weird black shades... the bonds were always rated AAA when in fact they were all garbage.

He is far less intelligent than he thinks he is and can't get a thought out without er, um, stumble, mumble, etc. For me, Fargo is way better than TD and on par with BB, hence the top 5.

Just because I'm really getting sick of hearing about how beautiful Margot Robbie is, can we please put her in Porn for say, 2 years, 50 hardcore movies, and see how that turns out? Honestly? Whenever someones beauty is emphasized this much, it's usually because they're plastic and nobody wants to or is willing to admit it.

***** I don't know on that, I actually haven't watched to many of the movies she's been in due to _reasons_ (not really ever related to her but more often to her cast mates, or the director (I would _love_ to stab Scorcese in the eye with a fork)). She's definitely attractive IMO, It's more about how much this actor or this actress is being used to clobber people over the head. I was reading some story about the current status of a rape-murder case and certain difficulties in the prosecution when I come to the end of the page, and the ads want me to know all about Kate Middleton's something or other. It's the reason why I really start losing sympathy for when really horrible shit happens in the news, because I just can't stand people that are just so empty, yet that really seems to be all there is. (my single rant of the evening, I hope)
@imsteezy18 жыл бұрын

imsteezy1 I ride public transit, it's really not that hard. The difference is that I more admire those that aren't using their looks as their sole selling point. I don't think Robbie is a terrible actress, but it's a little worrying (and telling) that whenever she get's brought up in these reviews, no mention is made of her acting, just, "Ohmigaw, she is soooo pretty!" Gag me.

Sorry but the housing collapse was caused by the greed of people not banks. The population of San Clemente went from 9,000 in 1995 to 74,000 by 2005, and house prices went from $99,000 to over $1 million. This kind of growth at such a rapid pace will only have a bad outcome. Banks did not force people to move to S.C and raise the average price of a house, people did. Also government regulations forced banks to make sub prime loans.
@nosuchthing88 жыл бұрын
false. When banks make ninja loans, they know they will collapse the system eventually. They have all the facts, all the experts, and all the expertise.
@brendagz54178 жыл бұрын
Sorry but they were forced to by the Democrats. They were told to find a way to make the loans available to all people regardless of credit, Sub-Prime. Look it up. They even cheered when a man bought a house and could not read or write or speak English, he signed with an X.
@nosuchthing88 жыл бұрын
+BrendaGZ There was no connection between the CRA and the collapse. No one has ever proven any correlation, Wikipedia has a good section on it.No one was forcing the financial institutions to help millionaires sell and resell their homes.
@brendagz54178 жыл бұрын
The collapse happened because people that could not afford the house in the first place stopped making payments. If the prices weren't over inflated and houses were sold to only people that were credit worthy then there would have been no meltdown.
@jzpding8 жыл бұрын
