Dutch might not see it that way because he is delusional though, but he did betray Arthur in reality. But he didn't know it at the same time, he thought he was doing right by his code. I may be wrong, but Dutch is a really complex character so it's really hard to understand what he is.

I know it's an old game but Yoshimo's betrayal in Baldur's Gate 2 was really something. You encounter this guy early on in a dungeon and he quickly becomes one of the most reliable assets in your adventures. He often talks with you and you end up really appreciating his input. Then one day you are captured and you realize Yoshimo led you all the way to the main antagonist. Having a companion character betray you in a D&D game was revolutionary at the time. There's also a rather cool redemption quest afterwards.

The biggest one for me has gotta be in Bioshock when you find out Atlas is actually Fontaine and that he was pulling the strings all along and he was the real main antagonist of the game, not Ryan. I know Mafia 3 wasn't a good game, but the first two hours were pretty much some of the best I've ever played. And the betrayal in the prologue was done so well. The whole cutscene, with the music, (paint it black) you could tell from the characters that they knew something wasn't right here and i was still so surprised about what happened. Even though the game was one boring grind, the cutscense and story were just a masterpiece.

There's two reasons - 1 Ghost is the same voice actor as Gaz from MW1 - with whom the player spends fighting shoulder to shoulder most of the campaign. 2 - army and military in general is a bureaucratic shit show Grunts stick together, suffer together, die together. People willing to join military are an odd bunch, but at times they tend to form potent bonds. It's true in life too, when someone jumps in without thinking to your help you can't help but appreciate them Even if they were required to by law or by orders etc

A nice collection. To add to the list, I'd like to nominate an old school betrayal that hit me hard, and one of the best video game twists for me, from fire emblem genealogy of the holy war. (Spoilers from here on). Arvis' betrayal at the end of part 1 is just epic. He kills your main character, nearly your entire party (including Arvis' half brother), and before killing you boasts about his new wife (your character's wife under a memory wiped spell). You get a a fade to grey scale as your characters die, a time skip and take over as new characters to avenge the old. That's hardcore for a SNES game in 1996.

Glad to see that both of the GTA V betrayals where Franklin has to choose between killing Michael or Trevor are both non canon. But I'd still say Dutch and Micah's betrayal to Arthur outweighs them all and should have been in this list. To have one of your mentors, your best friends, and one of the men who you considered an older brother/father figure turn on you and side with the one guy you despise really hurts.
