Nice work.... The spark who did the feed for my garage skated around using SWA (for whatever reasons) which I specified and he ended up using a split concentric cable which he certified. I wish we could also be clear on the use of CY and SY cables and how it applies or does not with the 18th Edition (not for fixed installations !) and someone needs to make a video about it, even if it's a 'we are not clear about it' one.

I think as long as the mechanical protection of SWA isn't explicitly required, you could always use NYY-J. It's not exactly flexible either but without the armour it should still be a bit easier.

Pop a wiska box externally for the ev charger and feed it in twin. Then run armoured out of the wiska box to the ev charger

Just a question - could the armoured have come through the wall low down then be fed up inside the heating pipe box? Would be neater, a bit more making good but better than the run up the outside wall?

It’s an extremely ridged cable and to get the 90 turn at the bottom of the pipe box then again at the top combined with glanding swa into the board with the length of tails required to come through the board wouldn’t have been a very pleasant day 🤦🏼‍♂️

You're supposed to to bring the inner insulation past the gland body and into the item it's getting glanded into. Most industrial jobs would make you rip it out and do it again if you done it like you have done.

The way the conductors pass through the entire switchgear causes that in the event of a lightning current is induced in the indoor installation. Surge arresters should be fitted at the main tails entrance of switchboard.

There just seems to be a massive disconnect in house design between the meter boxes and where new boards are installed, also seems weird running tails within cavities along an odd route you can not pull though. I would think this is just waiting for some good regulation to make it easier for people in the future. Personally, ive been looking at some new builds and the fuse boxes in the living room at mid level and the meter box other side of the house, what happened to the normal idea of having the fuse board in the hallway.

It's far easier to make the gland off on the cable first before you put it into the consumer unit or any other enclosure for that matter. Then it's just a matter of pushing the gland body through and putting the locknut on and it's better to help 'dress' it in. That way you can also ensure you've got all the armour in the gland visually. Good job otherwise but have to agree with others over the aesthetics of cable externally. Keep up the good work.

Can I ask. Clearly the original tails were longer than 3 Mtrs. If they had been less than 3 mtrs would you have been able to keep them even though they were run through the cavity ? What are your thoughts. Cheers.

@@Tyler-ph8bh Not really, combined neutral Earth (CNE) cable is only 12.3mm diameter in new builds for 25mm, older cable is separate neutral earth (SNE) but still only 15mm diameter for the same 25mm.

The DNO don't follow the same rules as we use when it comes to maximum demand. I once done a very small hotel rewire and we worked out that the supply tails would have to be 70mm on a 3PH supply and they only used 35. The lad who worked for them told us they follow a completely different set of rules

I assume not as the tails were in the fabric of the building with no rcd protection. Also the new consumer unit for the EV charger would have to be outside the meter cupboard due to space limitations.

Not in this case, that cabinet was so tight for space. Looked about half the width of the standard type cabinet. You would need a main isolator switch and then the tail splitters and a consumer unit, just wouldn't have fitted. I'm sure those existing 16mmsq tails were over 3m and therefore deemed not to be protected by the 100A cutout fuse - a non-compliance Chris had to get rid of and hence even when upgraded to 25mmsq SWA he had to fit a downstream switch fuse. I have thought about different ways this could have been done - but there was always a reason for non-compliance. Chris was bang on with this one. Blame the original designer of the house for him having to run that SWA!

Chris has done exactly what I would have done here, can’t see any other viable options. 25mm SWA into a switched fuse in meter cupboard is literally one of my least favourite things as you said Chris you never enjoy it! Could you have kept the original earth, I'm assuming it was 10mm if the meter tails were 16mm. As you also glanded the armoured would that equate to 16mm? Then maybe you could have used 2core armoured?

I did a fuse box board recently that was fed with a 25mm SWA, and there was no way I could get a 25mm conductor in the earth bar. I ended up putting a lug on it and bolting it to the board.

Why are the UK distribution boards either so high up or stuck in a cupboard low down? I think here in South Africa it can't be low to keep out of reach of children but can't be higher than 2.3m either. Also this single phase household thing boggles the mind. I've got three phase 80A per phase, so can run a LOT: three hot water cylinders, stove/oven, washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher, swimming pool and borehole pumps and there is still room for heaters / air conditioners etc. Neutral ends up carrying very little load.

Interesting you decided to sleve the black as an earth given a black was a neutral in the old colours, sleving the gray seems more logical to me less confusion when terminating both ends (sleved in new colours off course).

Funny thing is I did my part1, 2, and insp testing, skills test way back in 97 as part of my electrical apprenticeship as well as a ONC, HNC and NVQ's related to my industry. I never used my domestic qualifications much and have never been registered as a domestic installer as I worked in industry as a Maintenance Engineer. Doing my domestic qualifications was just an introduction to industry, I worked in a number of factory enviroments before graduating to the generation sector wind and more recently power station work. So as you can appreciate my domestic experiance is very limited and what I do on a day to day basis is very diffrent to what you do. My comment was not ment to offend, I like watching these clips just to keep my eye on the domestic sector as single phase working especially in your enviroment is very rare for me and watching these clips interest me. Also they help me keep my eye in as a there have been lots of changes since I did my domestic qualifications many moons ago.

I think the idea is for heat dissipation as the higher loaded RCBOs will get warm

@@havoctrousers RCBOs do get a little warm even with no load - there are electronics in them. Even at full load, things will stay within spec. I do something similar, it gives the opportunity to install an extra circuit in a logical place in the board at a later date, whether you lay out high to low rating or in "geographical" groupings

No it’s a switch fuse feeding the house not a dedicated circuit. Definition of a consumer unit is feeding 1 or more sub circuits connected to the supply of an incoming mains.

@@Cjrelectrical Just look s shoddy, I stopped using that kinda stuff years ago, 5C over a 4c+over run and if single phase always the right cable, before you know it your are in installing un-branded "Fuseboxes"!!!!
