Once upon a time, Honda & Toyota plus a few domestic brands made very basic and inexpensive (I don’t like the word ‘cheap’) vehicles that low wage earners could afford. They didn’t have the frills or fancy stuff that all modern cars have now that helps drive up the cost. We need makers to go back to basics. The vehicles highlighted here may be nice, but the average to below average person cannot afford them.

Unfortunately electric cars are here and the emphasis with most manufacturers is now on ev's. I'm doubtful if it will go away. I'm not a fan of ev's especially without the infrastructure to support ev's. Hybrid is probably a better way to go at least they have both an ice motors and a battery motor to run off. The elephant in the room is ev's especially with Chinese manufacturers like BYD. Eventually they will enter the market and if they can sell them on the cheap alot of people will go to them especially when a regular vehicle cost way more.

I went to the L.A. Auto Show and there wasn't much new or WOW! from anyone except the Korean companies and their EVs. Problem is I'm not an EV fan. The rest all seemed to be showing the same old models with just a bit of new trim. Quite disappointed in that the emphasis by car manufacturers is on more accessories and convenience features. I thought consumers were getting tired of all the software driven gadgetry and touch screens. But when I asked the reps some verified those features are being emphasized due to 'subscription services' which makes them a new ongoing revenue stream for the car companies. I thought those had gotten a lot of negative feedback from the public where they have already been put in service, like heated seats. Still waiting to see some smaller, affordable cars, but none were on the floor except silly mini-SUVs.

The main problem with Nissan as a car brand is their move to CVT transmissions. The transmissions don't hold up mechanically and the consumers only hope for the car is to replace the transmission. ( that's lots of $$$) A similar product quality exists with Stallantis, their cars don't hold up because of poor engineering & poor build. I love the A500 concept and car but I really don't want the repair bills that come with the car, so I don't own one. No one is producing a good commuter car any more or what I call a work car. Some thing that is just used to go to and from work and to and from the grocery store. Something that is reliable, relatively low cost, has good fuel economy, and has decent cargo room while seating two people. ( enough for at least a packaged lounge chair or hopefully one refrigerator or one dryer or washer) Comfort can be slightly compromised as you really won't be using it to go long distances. You will not want satellite navigation systems, video players, & similar devices in it. You will probably want a decent AC system, and a reliable automatic transmission in it . ( no CVT's!) ( perhaps a clutched automatic transmission to eliminate the transmission slip, Honda & Ford has such a transmission) Naturally, such a vehicle is going to resemble more of a mini-mini van than a car. In my opinion this why the consumer has moved to the SUV's, there was no cargo room & in some cases passenger room in the small& mid-sized cars.

None of those vehicles really stands out. These days, practically every car has all the niceties and features that anyone needs or wants. What none seem to have are low prices, high reliability, and low costs to repair. Put slightly larger normally aspirated engines in them and ditch the super and turbo chargers that just add complications and premature wear. Get rid of unnecessary creature comforts like rear massaging/heated/cooled seats and infotainment screens. Get rid of crap features like motor powered door openers, door handle extenders, retracting side mirrors, etc. The goal should be to reduce the complexity of electric and electronic systems enough that there is no need for a data bus.

What a joke of a report. Kia, Hyundai, Genesis and VW????? All unreliable JUNK. Jaguar F-Type is gorgeous but has been discontinued and the rest of Jaguar is going EV duhhh. Land Rover is another unreliable/junk car so to say they are doing well is a joke. No one in their right mind would buy Nissan considering close to going out of business and boring vehicles.

Blah blah blah. You ask mechanics and they say avoid buying any Korean vehicles. I agree. Stick to Honda and Toyota.
