FAQ Friday is our weekly roundup of YOUR questions! If you have any questions you’d like to ask, simply leave them in the comments below (or on KZbin), and I’ll do my best to answer them!
Here’s a big question!
What influences the final sound? Playing skills vs. Instrument Quality vs. Mic position vs. Mic?
First of all, it’s performance.
For me the number one most important thing with a guitar is the performer, especially an acoustic guitar.
Good performance, good left hand technique, good right hand technique, pick or fingers, whatever it might be, on a great instrument is going to be a huge deal. The most important thing is definitely the player then the instrument - in that order.
A good instrument is good, but only in the hands of a good player!
➡️During this episode of FAQ Friday I answer the following questions:
• What influences the final sound? Playing skills vs. Instrument Quality vs. Mic position vs. Mic?0:44
• I’d like to know your thoughts on playing without picks. I prefer the sound of an acoustic using my fingers. Do you always play with a pick or do you use a combination? 7:06
• At home I always seem to lose track of my picks. I’ll buy like 20 at a time and eventually they all get lost to, what seems, another dimension. Do you have a similar experience in the studio?? 9:22
• You got some new small monitors. What are they? 10:26
• When do you sleep? 13:40
• Would use the same technique for micing an acoustic when the player is playing using his fingers in a song like "Dust In The Wind", Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" or Beatles "Blackbird"? 16:26

Great video! Thanks for advice. This is my worry or conern Warren... You're blessed to work in music and I feel blessed too to be able to work in this field. It it truly amazing. But 15 hour days??? for 3 months??? or even 1 month??? drives me insane! I become unpleasant as a person....and the opposite of humble... So my question is... Do you burn out? Or how do you avoid burnout ? How do you remain so pleasant with 15 hour days?????

Hi Warren, do you know Aaron Clarey.. Its a down to earth guy with several economic books and a book about high iq.. But I get a bit annoyed by his way he views artists... We all know if you are passionate and talented and you work your whole life hard, that it is a bit difficult to succeed nowadays with just playing music ( Even Vinnie Colaiuta would tell us: from 3 studiosessions a day, maybe now 3 a month..)... Some people give up on their instrument and will do an easy boring job, but I feel sorry for their wasted talent... I hope every passionate musician will choose wisely to follow their passion and find the middleway in our money-based society... With creativity we can survive, with narrow minded thinking in any field the outcome is...Narrow and low level.... I wish every musician/artist my true best!!!!!!!

About the speakers, just to add a little bedroom producer's point of vue : in a home-studio like mine, a 6" monitor is already big! (and you have to put 2 on your desk ;^p) I don't have an optimized space, I don't have a "real" (professionnaly measured) acoustic treatment. I don't even have a mixing workbench! Just a shitty table with some shelves on top of unfixed feet to put my monitors on >_< Also, I have to take consideration of my room, the existing furnitures, etc... For instance, if I want monitors working perfectly in my *room* (meaning the room where is my workspace), I should have take 8" woofer monitors! Minimum! But if I want speakers going accordingly with my *workspace*, I'm limited to 3, 4 perhaps 4.5" woofers. I totally agree on the front bass port, for us bedroom producers, the front ported bass reflex is almost mandatory, whatever brand you choose, and I've tried rear ported bass reflex Genelec for instance, 8020 if I remember correctly. They sounded like shite!!... With a small 4" woofer! 0_o That wasn't the monitors fault. They sound like this, ONLY in my room! ^_^' (Thankfully I had a return option) So, your room and its size are a very important part of the equation when choosing your monitors. In my case, I've opted for 6" in a less than optimal configuration... I spent almost a month to configure my workspace (and the room)! But it worked :) Just keep in mind that when you don't have the right space, two 6.5" monitors, no matter how good they are, are almost impossible to configure. I think it's an important thing to specify. (I hope I haven't made too many mistake and I successfuly transmitted what I wanted to say. I'm not a native speaker) Cheers!

Indeed! Incredibly small rooms wouldn't work with 6 inch drivers. However a regular bedroom this would work great! I've had many studios in bedrooms and used 6 inch speakers and got great results!

So having seen your ability to play more than a few instruments and styles to a pretty decent standard...I have this question. Is that ability part of the key to being a great audio engineer? Does that give you an advantage over a non-player?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 жыл бұрын
Marvellous question! Yes...and no! Haha I do personally believe it gives me a leg up in the modern world because I can fulfil many res, however some of the best Engineers I've ever worked with were not musicians! Given the biggest budget available the Engineers I would choose are not musicians at all!

Great answer Warren and the one I expected. The best engineer and mentor I ever worked with Tony Chapman of Enigma Studio could not play a note and envied my ability to play a few instruments (badly :D) But that man could run rings around most other engineers and I would trade my playing to have his ears...maybe...

Not that anyone asked, but I'm all about the Dunlop Nylon Max Grip picks (0.88 for most applications). I've had a strong preference for Dunlop nylon picks for many, many years and once I tried out the "Max Grip" style, I was done. I do have other picks for special cases, but that's my default. I don't do much of the claw style and will typically not use a pick at all for arpeggio type stuff on acoustic including classical or folk music.

Thanks Warren! With 3 boys growing up in our household, all trying to surpass my Father's guitar skills, guitar pics quickly became a rarity. One day our washing machine stopped working. I had a good chuckle at your comment tonight, regarding where to look for lost picks.

The things that impact a guitar recording most, in order: 1. Player/performance 2. Mic placement 3. Guitar [instrument] 4. Mic type You could apply this same "order or importance" to anything you're recording. Far less important, but can still get you that extra cutting edge sound: *Pick thickness *1/4" and XLR Cable quality

This is a specific solution for a pretty specific acoustic guitar probem, but might be helpful to apartment/bedroom musicians looking to spend $100 or less for a solution. For anyone using an acoustic or classical with a built in preamp trying to record in a noisy environmnent, try a Yamaha AG Stomp. I recorded a bunch of solo classical stuff (nylon string guitar) and got shockingly good results. For anyone recording in an apartment, hey they're like 100 on reverb used. Now that I have better mics I use it less, but sometimes there's guys outside my apt doing landscaping all day with backhoes and diesel trucks - I know if I plug in, I can get decent non quacky takes completed despite the piezo pickups.

Hi Warren,What's your view on all solid acoustics vs. ply back& sides acoustics? I'm guessing the guitars you own (or were talking about) are not solids. Do you have a reason for using those (other than price)? I've read somewhere that producers tend to prefer them because they have less specific resonant frequencies. Is there any truth to that idea?

hey warren, i've got a question for you. how would you go about mixing drums recorded with only one mic, especially when you can barely hear anything but the cymbals in the mix?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 жыл бұрын
Marvellous question! A DeEsser will control the excessive high end and also you could try light amounts of saturation to soak up the high end as well. In Pro Tools for instance Lo Fi does a great job of eating up the high end in mono drum mics!

The Line Audio CM3 sounds remarkably good on acoustic. Very inexpensive for how incredibly good they sound on all acoustic instruments... none of that forced and brittle top-end you get with most cheap SDCs. Very even and detailed, can't recommend them enough.

I like the SM81, it's a little too expensive for me, considering a lot of my cheaper condensers usually beat it. I have two, but haven't used them much recently.

FEAR THE CLAW!! Great video Warren. You are such a quietly awesome player. You lull people into a false sense of security, then SMACK! Time to go practice kiddies. Since my MO on your channel is generally to ask pertinent questions, here's one: which type of mic do you prefer for acoustics? I have used SM-57's, and various condensers. Is a ribbon a better choice for acoustic recording, given the expanded detail and richness compared to the other types of mics, or is it usually just a program-dependent thing with you?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 жыл бұрын
AW shucks you are far too kind my friend! I love to play guitar! It's what go time started on this journey! I like small diaphragm condensers on guitar, a Lewitt LCT140 or 340, AKG 451, Neumann KM56 are all favourites!

Interesting. Thank you so much for the reply Warren. I have little to no experience with small diaphragm mics whatsoever. I guess it's time to investigate. :) BTW, what are you doing up so late young man?

Best mic I've ever used for acoustic is the relatively cheap Sterling ST55....I think I paid $149 for mine, brand new. It's just really really good at acoustic instruments before any mods or treatment. At the 12th fret aiming slightly in at the body, it just sounds brilliant. I've tried a dozen or so based on producer's recommendations and I think it's as good as they come.

Back in the day we would have laughed at the idea that someone thought a Harmony Stella was worth upgrading! I learned on a Stella in '73; totally crappy guitar! Warped neck (no truss rod so no way to adjust if I remember correctly), bad bridge, way high action, and one tuning peg button was missing so you needed vice grips to tune that string. Only good thing about it was that it was free!
