Hey guys! I just wanna mention that I apparently used the wrong pronouns when talking about Of Herbs And Altars in this video. My apologies to this KZbinr and everyone else. I wasn't aware I was using the incorrect pronouns, as I didn't see pronouns on the KZbin channel. Thanks to the people who pointed this out to me. I sincerely apologise.

Okay.. first off I'm male. I've been in the goth scene for well over 20 years. Let's deal with a couple of issues from my male side of things. Being "Goth" doesn't mean dressing up 24/7 365 days a year as it may appear on social media. Many goths go out to work looking like everyone else. They fit in, have good jobs etc. They potentially dress up when going out, such as to a goth club. I go out clubbing fairly regularly, normally alone, possibly in PVC, tight jeans, possibly a skirt, possibly victorian goth, depending on my mood. I want to look good, I enjoy potentially being noticed by the other sex, we all get a confidence boost from it, male or female. I've been happily married for 20 years and that's all you are getting however, a look. You'll probably find goth women are far more heavily into romantic gestures than "kink". I've been to a fetish club when younger, wasn't my scene but there are common factors which cannot be stressed enough. Respect and consent. In my experience, one of the reasons I like clubbing is that goth clubs are not "meat/cattle markets". People aren't generally there only to pick up girls/boys. They are there to enjoy the music. Sure you do get people finding partners but it's a different atmosphere to what I would call normal clubs. As a male that means it's less confrontational which generally means less potential for violence. An interesting article dating way back to 2006 was in the UK Independent newspaper which can be found online titled "Don't mock goths: future's bright for the men and women in black". If you are interested in "goths" I would recommend taking a look.

Hi Jayne, I have a great respect for the Goth culture and I was lucky enough to be in Whitby in 2018 and caught the end of the Goth weekend there. It was fabulous to see so many people dressed so well, the colours and attention to detail was incredible. I wanted to take some pictures and as a common courtesy I asked them if it was alright for me to take their photo first, most were happy to oblige but not all. I did not /do not want to embarrass anyone so I took only a few pictures. Could you enlighten those of us who admire the Goth scene but are not part of it on the correct protocols concerning approaching Ladies in particular, when wishing to take their picture or just giving them a sincere compliment as the last thing I want to do is say the wrong thing and embarrass them and myself. For example would it be correct to say " I love your outfit, you look fantastic" or would the term "outfit" be considered derogatory ? Could you suggest the correct way to go about this in your next video? I am sure I am not the only one who would like to know how to compliment someone without offending them.

Hi there, this seems like an interesting idea to discuss in a future video! I will keep this topic in mind, though it might take me a couple of weeks to find the time to record and edit it (sorry, busy writing my thesis for uni). To answer your question for now, I’d say complimenting someone’s outfit is fine. I personally never really mind people walking up to me to take a pic / give me a compliment. I think, as long as you can clarify that you are not trying to objectify / sexualise them (which happens a lot to goths), complimenting a person is almost always welcome. Just be clear about your intentions (I know some people are quick to assume that you’re flirting when complimenting someone). And try to avoid assuming things about goths, there are many misconceptions about the goth subculture and the worst thing that you can do is start talking about BDSM for example, because people assume that is a goth thing when it’s not. You probably wouldn’t just do that but it’s just an example, haha. But yeah I think telling a goth that they look good is super nice, especially since goths are often judged or bullied for their unique looks, I think many goths would feel happy to talk to a non-goth who appreciates their style! 😊

Interesting. As I understand witch craft, its akin to a form of prayer almost - a practice, as you say, rather than something which has a specific aesthetic associated with it. As for having a goth girlfriend? As someone with a dark mind (though I don't look like a goth, not least because I have a large frame and the style doesn't look great on me, at least what I've tried of it) I would like to be with someone like that, who shared those interests - the music (some of it), the love of the literature, the architecture, the darker side of things, the technological aspects of it, etc. The sexual side of things, BDSM/kink whatever, I would maybe be open to trying some of that if she was into it, but its not high on the list if I can put it that way. Its about the qualities of the person rather than the sex for me. And of course the aesthetic is amazing - not sure if acknowledging that is objectification in a way, but I think its beautiful. I've never heard that there is a goth body type really, the goths I have met all have different body types and encompass a wide range of different ages and races as well - I've heard that there is a feeling among some people that black and Asian people aren't suited to the goth aesthetic for example, but I don't subscribe to that at all, its...kind of ridiculous in my opinion. Cool video, thankyou. :)

Ideally, witches should be the only people wearing pentagrams like Christians wear crosses, though some goths do were crosses because of the gothic Catholic sort of aesthetic. But religious symbols are sacred and pentagrams were once a symbol by which pagans could find other pagans…now that Killstar and other companies sell clothing with occult symbols all over it, it is hard for witches and pagans to find other likeminded people by looks, since them wearing such symbols could be superficial. It’s actually a bit annoying. :)

What (as a goth myself) pisses me off most is when people tell me "oh yeah I once had a _goth phase_ too when I was 16" Yeah, dude no. Being goth isn't a phase, it's a mindset awakening. Once goth you usually stay goth even if you don't proceed to dress in black your whole life (many for social reasons, sadly). If it was only "a phase" for you, sorry you weren't goth, you've been an edge-lord teenager, that's all. Don't even compare yourself to me! 🙄

2:07 People call me a witch very often and sometimes it´s because I wear those colorful striped knee socks - which is kinda funny ´cause according to what I´ve heard (from real witches of the internet) most witches do NOT even wear those. I just find it kinda weird that people assume that witches have some "dresscode" or something and if you´re wearing for example these striped knee socks - you must be a witch...

@@JayneGoth They are. The goth (and all the others I mentioned) crowd is, to me at least, the most non judgemental crowd around. I share a lot of hobbies and interests with the whole subculture. @@JayneGoth I hate to ask this, but one thing I myself of guilty of is often mislabeling individuals. Have you done a video about the difference between "goth" and "emo" and "e-girl" and "vamp" etc? At my age (soon to be 40) it seems to all blend together at certain points and even change now and then. For example: content creator "ClawedBeauty" addresses herself in many of her videos as a "goth wife" but from my knowledge she would be more emo or e-girl? Content creator "RavenGrim" I always referenced as goth or vamp, but in one of her newer shorts she calls herself an "e-girl"?

This in MY oppinion and MY experence alone .I know many older Goths .I think if your 14 and a Goth Its your buisness and no one elses .If your 60/70 and a Goth then you have done your apprenticeship then no justifaction is required . Many of the Goths I know are ''interested'' in witchcraft . But none of the Witches I know are Goths .I find all Goth girls /Ladys very aesthetically desirable but attraction is not just a case of aesthetic's alone .The Goth's I know are in the main deep thinking and hightley intelligent individual's who Contrary to common belief are no more depressive than anyone else ,are allways fun to be with and allways are willing to engross themselves in diverse and meaningfull conversation .On many occations when in their company I have dressed appropriately as the situation was required But I am not a Goth or a pretender and will never clame to be .But as a fashion choice I find it very stylish. In the words of a great man .Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.....Blessed be

Oh yeah, that's actually really offensive to hear that some people think goths are extinct. I am goth and I remember discussing subcultures during the class in uni. My groupmate said smth like Oh yeah, subcultures, they used to exist. And both my teacher and I responded simultaneously: They still do. It's also sad coz I don't always dress goth and therefore not all the people might know I consider myself one. Somehow pentagrams and skulls I wear is like the most ordinary thing to people, they might be thinking it's a part of alt fashion in general or smth. I've also heard some offensive misconceptions about goths like we don't have a father, we're mentally ill, we're the same as e-girls and aren't different from them. I really hope more people will learn the difference someday. I don't regret becoming goth tho, I'm happy to be a part of a very niche thing, to add songs from every goth KZbinr I watch, to watch like-minded people. Becoming one also makes me care more about my style and appearance but in a positive way.

This is really relatable! I have had similair experiences in my uni. Especially since goth is not very popular in my country, a lot of people here think very negative things about goths. @reggiepoison

@@JayneGoth I can relate to that, goths aren't really popular in my country either. I haven't known a single goth irl. Although in my country there are family series from 2000s, quite popular ones, where the father has 5 daughters and one of them is goth. This goth daughter was so cool, but sadly, later on she became normie. She might've even influenced me deep inside and I even have the same name as her ironically. Hopefully I don't overshare or smth, but I do enjoy talking to people with common interests. And yeah, the Internet makes being goth so much easier and better. That's really cool

The Internet does indeed make being goth more fun! It’s the reason why I made a goth youtube channel: because people in my real life just aren’t very interested in this stuff. @@JayneGoth wow, ig it just shows that being goth is a really permanent thing and has a lot to do with one's mindset and personality that people think. That's cool on u to be interested in this stuff since the very childhood. I personally found peace in riding a bike by the local cemetery and I sometimes passed it by in the dark. I'm also a fan of the Addams family and Tim Berton's movies which is pretty typical for goths, but isn't super common in general. Idk if u can relate but being goth made me realise I'm not a creep (in a negative way) and not a psychopath or smth, but being goth is who I naturally am. I'm sorry for ur not knowing goths irl, hopefully this will change someday 🖤🖤

I can totally relate. I’ve always been a bit of an outsider (not by choice), but watching and connecting with other goths and alternative people made me realise that I don’t have to fit in everywhere and it’s not weird of me to like different things. I’ve been goth for as long as I can remember, I recall going to school with black eyeshadow when I was like 10 and everyone thought I had a literal black eye but it was just make-up lol. People thought it was weird but I was so proud of my (very badly done) goth look. I’ve learned that you just need to be yourself because people will judge you anyway. Being goth feels way more comforting and freeing to me than trying to fit in like I used to do
