Due to the fact that every subculture is music-based, how about the misconception that you have to listen to ONLY goth music and nothing else?
@JayneGoth

That's a good one! Of course, being goth doesn't mean that you're only allowed to listen to 1 music genre. I might mention this in a new misconceptions video!

It’s okay to want to date someone that’s mentally ill but it’s not okay to fetishise them. If you want to date them either way that’s good but it’s weird if it’s your type because you think she’ll be your manic pixie dream girl

Yeah, that's exactly my point. Of course, it is okay to fall for someone who has a mental disorder (I should have mentioned this in the video now that I think about it). The fetishization and wrong expectations are the problem.

While I understand your argument partially, I have a problem with the broad reasoning. People are attracted to other people for reasons. To choose a partner is a discriminatory process. It's supposed to be, and it has to be by it's very nature. And what you describe as "fetishizing" is not technically, actually a fetish. Nobody will be attracted to you for no reason, or only for the reasons you choose to project. If it's "weird" for someone to be attracted, i.e. to a girl on the autism spectrum, then there is no partner for that girl. It's that simple. Would you prefer for a neurodivergent person to be with someone who hates their features and struggles through them, rather than fully enjoying the presence of that person? What is wrong is dishonest, predatory and inconsiderate partners. I get it that there are lots of incels out there, who would simply like to find an attractive girl who is also "damaged" like them; and they project their fantasies onto that person. You should be careful with them. But I wouldn't be so quick about judging what's OK to be attracted to, and what isn't. I am NOT attracted to "manic pixie dream girl", but here's the thing: they exist. Do their boyfriends look like pedos? Sure, but what you gonna do xD

Ive always fancied getting a goth gf because I have a lot of dark interests and obscure interests that I think a goth would stereotypically be into as well. You know, cryptids, crime dramas, dark fantasy novels etc. I also like deep conversation, and most goths i remember from my younger years were very introspective and self aware people.

I think that’s a pretty good reason to want a goth gf! As I said in the video, if it’s about interests, that’s totally cool ❤️ although I bet some non-goth females are into those things as well!

I can understand this, I started understanding goth subculture through Type O Negative, while I do love the goth subculture I have to say I’m a metalhead originally. But the more I grew to love Type O (my favorite band) I started developing an appreciation for goth elements. I don’t even say that I primarily want a goth girlfriend, but rather a girlfriend that can love Type O as much as I do. If she’s goth, cool, if she’s not, also cool.

The biggest problem in my opinion is "goth felishization" by the mainstream media and streamers. What I hate the most is that they exploit people's "real" preference. The integrity is getting lost and its even harder to tell if the person "really" likes it or because it's "trendy". Personally I like being in the company of goth girls, doesn't mean I'm obessed with having a goth gf. Many guys like goth girls but we don't know if its their real taste or because media told them its cool to like goth girls.

I’ll be 50 this year. In my youth (and quite recently too) I’ve had quite normal bouts of reactive depression due to tragic life events. In those times, it’s exactly when I can’t be bothered to “goth up” with the makeup and accessories. A depressed person couldn’t be bothered to throw all the effort I’ve put into looking pretty freaky over the last 30+ years! 🤣👻😳 I have only mainstream friends and they’d tell you I’m the life and soul of the party…and pretty loud. Some people will always judge Goths negatively, and I’m glad, I don’t ever want to confirm to their boring normalcy, however old I get. Stay strange, stay you, stuff what other people think, their opinions mean nothing. 🖤🕸️🕷️🦇🖤🕸️🕷️🦇🌹 P.S. This judgemental thing that “you’re not Goth unless…” type stuff is a new thing to me, as an ElderGoth. It seems to just be online elitist/purest people hung up on the wrong things. A good Goth doesn’t judge others on their clothes, music choices etc. Baby bats doing this, please stop, you’re acting like a puritanical mainstream Dad figure, waggling those judgey fingers and you may as well trade in your New Rocks for a pipe and slippers…🙄👎🏻

It's really helpful to listen to people like you talking about the freedom to wear clothes we like coz as a "babybat"(beginner goth) I feel like I'm obliged to dress goth all the time and hearing ur opinion helps to be more chill about my appearance. I'm the person who genuinely loves dressing in a dark and morbid style, am into skulls a ton expectedly, but I also love my cute corgie blouse and some other cute stuff I own, I do also fancy my colourful checked shirts (even tho I heard them being called basic, I almost don't see people wearing these shirts in my town). So far being goth seems cool to me though coz after having been goth mentally for all my life without knowing it (and even after hearing that I seem like a naturally gothic person) this subculture finally gives me feeling of belonging and fitting in. Fun fact lol: as for negative attention, even despite the fact I live in quite a small town of a conservative country and did dress gothic even before considering myself one, I received compliments on my pentagram necklace more often than on other stuff I wore. Quite unexpected but welcomed.
@JayneGoth
@JayneGoth 7 ай бұрын
I'm glad to hear you're feeling more comfortable dressing the way you want! You can totally wear colourful clothes and still be goth. It's more about the mindset and the music and less about the way you look. Even though dressing dark is really fun, you shouldn't feel forced to do so in order to "be more goth". Goth is about freedom of expression, so you should just dress in a way that makes you feel the most like yourself :) ♥

I’m a really “old bat”. It’s impractical, impossible and exhausting to be fully Goth’d Up all the time. You have the right idea that being Goth is a state of mind. I was a weirdo into dark things as a child, just coincidentally as the original Goth scene actually came into fruition, but as a child, I wasn’t even aware of it. I used to put black boot polish on my lips and walk around with a disembodied doll’s head. My Mum, who wasn’t a “Goth” coz it didn’t even exist as a subculture in her youth, thought the way I freaked people out was hilarious. As a teenager, someone said to me “oh you’re a Goth” and I genuinely had to look into it coz I didn’t know it was a thing! So what I’m saying is, basically, it *is* a state of mind rather than a state of dress 🖤

if someone wants a goth gf i tend to take it halfheartedly, but it just completely depends on the reason. If its mainly because you're attracted to the aesthetic, i cant blame you, best of luck, as long as you dont date them exclusively for that reason. especially since, as you said, we dont "look" goth more often than not lol if its because you think they're kinky or a mentally damaged thing you can fix, you may unkindly fuck off. thats really weird. if its because they like macabre things and dark music and you want somebody to relate to, more power to you!
