I don't quite have it down yet, but this video was the first one on KZbin that got me to dramatically increase my power. While I never drive a ball over 210 yards normally, I got on to fly 230 and hit all clubs 10-20 yard longer with ease. I think the "Chicken Wing" and bent arm backswing are the two Achilles heels that held me back. A++++++

Took a lesson from mike dunaway years ago, he hated the way my left arm was working. He wanted me to hit a hundred balls a day with just my left arm. I have tried to figure out how he was so fast. From toe up to toe up. Now I know he threw it around the pole. Mike was also 1 of the nicest people I’ve meet in golf. Thanks for sharing this with us

Mike I have only been golfing for 4 years-stating at 58 yrs old so while I am in good shape I don’t expect to hit my drives over 250 yards but after a bad car accident a year and a half ago that injured my lower back my swing acquired a big body slide as part of my transition to the down swing. I started to slide my upper body towards the ball/target followed by my having to chicken wing my left arm to try to square up the club head. This also often resulted in a slice as I cut across the back of the ball due to the chicken wing shortening up the arc of my club head during the follow thru as I attempted to keep the club head square to the ball. With the chicken wing I had virtually no wrist release at all. With the body slide/chicken wing habit I developed I watched my drives drop from 240/245 or so yards to 210 give or take. I watched your video yesterday and practiced the pole exercise allowing the left arm to collapse 30 or so inches after impact. Concentrating on nothing but a straight left arm in the back swing, maintaining a 7 and letting the left arm fold in after impact I gained 20-30 yards today on the range and out on the course. Without even trying or concentrating on preventing the horrible body slide I had developed video of my swings on the course today show that it miraculously disappeared. I believe that concentrating on the arm collapse prevented the habit I had developed of pulling the club handle forward followed by a body slide forward and the need to chicken wing to square up the club face. Backing up from the point where I was now allowing my wrists to release (using the pole/arm collapse exercise in your vid) I was naturally allowing my club to swing around my center. This exercise changed the timing/tempo of my whole swing with outstanding (almost immediate) tangible improvement. Thank you. Also love your laid back and clear delivery. I am a fan.

As a world masters squash champion I blame my back injury over 30 years ago for the lack of flexibility which is affecting my golf swing. Unfortunately in the Uk we are restricted from playing golf - and I have not played squash regularly since last March which is not helping, and it has been very wet since November so I am watching your videos with interest and cant wait to get back on the course - looks like it might be the spring now. But I like your style - I would certainly visit you if you were in the UK. being nearly 80 is not helping either. But I hope to improve after watching your videos when I do get back on the golf course

My current swing speed is 140mph+ with a 45 inch driver and i'm just about to start speed training to really ramp up the numbers! Once again thanks for all the videos Steve your constantly helping me improve my swing. :)

Very nice! I'm going to work on this tomorrow...and will let you know. I've just started playing in earnest in my early 60's and have dtopoed about 30 strokes in 18 months. Nice! After choosing my line and setting up properly, my swing thoughts are simply to make a slow lazy takeaway and complete backswing with smooth transition back down, to keep my head as still as possible, and to accelerate all the way through the zone. I simply do my feeble best to visualize the swing of Fred Couples and aim to mimic it to whatever extent I can. Sometimes I get a bit sawed off in the follow through which is a natural and somewhat reflexive attempt to protect my back. When that starts happening I need to remind myself to finish with my hands high (this promotes proper acceleration through the zone). This has been my process since I first saw him in a practice round in 1980. My best advice to others is to identify a pro who’s swing seems closest in style to your natural movement. Then go watch him on the practice range as often as possible. If you can find slow motion video of his swing, study that frequently and to the point that all you’ve seen is clearly visible in your imagination. That’s it. Do it over and over forever. It works.

Steve Pratt Golf: indeed he did AND STILL DOES! The players with long, flowing, swings that appear seemingly effortless seem to be able to play beautifully in later life. Maybe not still at the top levels, but their swings remain fluid for years and are like poetry in motion. Watson’s swing would be a great one to emulate! Seve had a lovely swing too but suffered from frequent bouts of inconsistency. Larry Mize had a beautiful swing. So did Steve Elkington.

Trying this drill then watching my swing on video I appear to hit the positions but my shoulders remain relatively level at ball contact as they were at address and my arms and hands pass my shoulders resulting in No distance. I noticed your shoulders keep rotating as if the left shoulder is pulling the left arm thru impact but you did not comment on the shoulder movement, specifically the rotation of the Left shoulder which appears to be a critical element of the drill you want us to perform for more distance. What is your thinking of the left shoulder movement in this drill?
@rickskoreyko29494 жыл бұрын

@rajoconnor4 жыл бұрын
Good explanation. My issue is also in the backswing, moving too far off the ball. I’ve tried to limit my movements but that just locks things up creating a shallow backswing which resulted in this and too low spinning shots. I am sure you have a video for this?

Great video cause I've chicken wing my arm to death lol. Does it matter what type of shaft you have to gain more distance. My son has a really fast swing, even though my old drive is a stiff shaft, it's not really catching up with his hand causing the shaft to bow even more and lose more distance. Thanks.

Doing the drill with the Momentus Speed Whoosh, how long would a typical amateur expect to see any results in their swing speed, better contact, more ball speed, more upwards AoA, & squarer clubface?
@Inmotion704 жыл бұрын
If that is truly the error in your swing, you can start to see results on the range at slow speed fairly quickly, but 1-6 weeks on the course.

Why isn’t a slight bend in left arm creating an additional lever at impact?
@Inmotion704 жыл бұрын
If you had any bend in the left arm, it would be on the way down, but then straighten out abruptly through impact. That might create some leverage but will also wreck your angle of attack and make it harder to square the face.
@wildebeest884 жыл бұрын
If that flip comes too early you'll get a nice duck hook or pull hook. Trust me its damn difficult to get a hook out the swing particularly if the body doesn't rotate and shift adequately. The harder you go at the less time one has.

I never hook the ball because the toe of my clubface never passes the heel along the arc. I don't FLIP, I FLAP.

It would be much better to address the reason why the chicken wing occurs in the first place rather than trying to do a drill to stop the chicken wing. Ensuring you're moving your body correctly makes it impossible to do the chicken wing. People that have a chicken wing in their follow through are not posting up on their left leg, clearing their hips and releasing the club through impact properly. Fix your hips and leg movement and the arms will take care of themselves.
@Inmotion704 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a great video you can do on your youtube channel!

@industrialpalletworx35484 жыл бұрын
I whole heartedly disagree with your left arm or lead arm explanation. Yes it is required for the width and the pulling action no doubt about it. I wouldn't characterize it as the biggest leak. I personally feel the biggest lead is in the hip rotation back and through. I see way more people with a whole lot of wasted movement in their hip rotation compared to the pros. Getting the simplified hip rotation down like the pros creates effortless power. At least it has for me. Picked up a little over 10 mph in club head speed

Sorry, this video strikes me as far too complicated, mechanical, and "flip" encouraging! Flipping, imho, is the #1 amateur power leak.
@Inmotion704 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to be as flippy as possible. What you're confusing is why a flip happens, which is when the body doesn't shift-turn enough. It has ZERO to do with the wrist action.
