Grammys snubbing Nicki Minaj for over a decade now, while showering with Grammys every newcomer, gimmick, or industry plant that comes along for 5 minutes of fame, just to fail miserably and fade into irrelevance afterwards, is what makes Grammys less relevant regarding hip hop. Led Zeppelin famously never won a Grammy in the 70s. Also, if you look at rock albums that have one AOTY it's the same as what he was saying for hip-hop. They tend to be more on the poppier and softer side. If the album was on the heavier side and less assessable to pop audiences it never got a look for the category, even if it was groundbreaking like Nirvana's Nevermind or any of Metallica's 80s albums. I think the heaviest rock album to win is Alanis Morrissette's album which is pretty poppy sounding.

Maybe if rappers could be more creative without having to rap about the same old things and glorifying degenerate hooligan behaviour in their music and actually have substance. Historically, Album of the year has always been dominated by pop music. Everyone votes in the general categories so it makes more sense that the more digestible music tends to do better. Even when another genre wins, it typically happens to be a more pop leaning record. For example, Hip-hop albums that won it had lots of singing on it like with Outkast's win and Lauryn Hill's win. Something that is straight rapping, like a Nas album, can win rap album of the year but not album of the year. Same for rock music, heavy metal artist or hard rock stuff like Metallica or Nirvana has never won it. It is usually more soft and poppier rock music like Alanis Morrisette. The only exception to this seems to be Jazz. Every once in awhile a Jazz album wins and I am not sure how they do it.
@arnoldsteyn4804 ай бұрын
Nicki Minaj never won, c'mon man. Now tell me her music is not leaning towards pop or is digestible. Even 4 year olds sing along to Nicky. The Grammys is outright racist and discriminate everything black and that's it. The reason why Kendrick Don't win is because he tells them straight "You f#&*ing hate me Don't you?" You hate my people the plan is to terminate my culture" "You sabotage my community making a killing". All white people care a bout is making money off HIP HoP. The founders of the Grammys were amongst the people who wanted HIP hop banned and described it as music that incites violence and the use of strong language. Here is a tip and only a genius will figure this out. Granting Kendrick a Grammy will most ultimately legitimize his message and make the Grammys look like they believe he is talking the truth.

There is this idea that the Grammys reward the best song-writers and producers. So, as rap and hip hop are genres that use many samples, the list of writers and producers tend to be very large. As they don’t want to reward 30 people, that’s why allegedly they prefer albums with no sampling, short writing and producing teams.

The recording academy sneers at hiphop (and EDM) and they always have. The ballot system is very political, it’s like running for president, you campaign..hard. You have the voting blocks, for example, Nashville is a powerful voting block and they will usually coalesce around a country, rock, or a pop record with minimal writers, composed on *instruments.* They’re not a fan of albums choc-full of samples either. They’re more than happy to humble hiphop at the Grammys, year after year. Im not sure if we’ll ever see a purely rap album win AOTY any time soon 😅

Honestly, the only artists that deserve to be nominated for aoty ate Olivia Rodrigo and SZA. And I have listened to all of these albums, so this is completely bias free

this is not just in the hip hop scene but also in the latin scene putting artists in genres where they dont belong and winning and always the same people winning and not giving way to new artist that deserves it that haved worked hard at there own expense and they dont get a chance but ofcoarse also money talks

people complain all year about the lack of “quality” and complain more when there’s no album nominated ????

Lemme put a hot take out here. If white ppl were the ones who created hiphop, rap would be winning every Grammy👐🏾

As long as sza wins something this year I don't care about anybody else there that is nominated.

Killer mike didn't deserve to be nominated at least, i have never heard of his music and i listen to hip hop music. They lost their quality and they are called out for a reason. Grammys are about profit preferences and in very few cases where commercial success is rewarded

3:15 it's because they can't compete with relevance in the upsurge of hip hop, so pretending it isn't their takes it from the Grammy's to their own little event. One in hindsight that probably wouldn't exist with hip hop and rap being present. So instead of pushing yourself to be better or as good as your surroundings, you pretend to be the zenith itself. Thus robbing yourself from ever truly getting there.

worse than not having a hip hop album... the albums they selected for the AOTY were just not that good, with exception to Baptiste and Sza
