I was in Costa Rica last month and the one restaurant I was in for dinner wasn't busy when I arrived. The 19yo waitress asked if I had any requests and Blue Monday was the song I asked her to play. She said she'd never heard of New Order before and she loved the fresh sound, didn't realize the song was made 20 years before she was born. She really seemed to think it was new. We listened to a few more songs while I ate dinner, dessert and chatted. The next night I walked past the restaurant again, it was busier and they were playing songs from Power, Corruption & Lies. Think we converted a new fan or two.

I was a college DJ back in the day. I would put this song on so that I could walk to the dining hall, eat breakfast and get back to the studio in time! They played the college radio station in the dining hall. Life was good. 😊
@YahWay.18 күн бұрын
I first heard it in small town, British Columbia from 1600 KJET In Seattle. When the air was right. Drove me nuts because I think it was for their station ID, and they never said the name of the song.

What an unexpected episode. I've seen Peter Hook and the Light four or five times, and it is always a great show. His novel is fantastic as well. The great thing about this episode is the story about why it was created in the first place (great story) and learning about the four distinct influences on "Blue Monday" - so cool. I had no idea, but it is evident when you hear the licks presented in this video. Wow. Another great thing I learned was New Order and Peter's relationship with the recently deceased Quincy Jones. If you haven't seen the documentary on Netflix about his life directed by his daughter Rashida, do yourself a favor and watch it. R.I.P. Q. Thanks POR. Brilliant.

In 1983, my friend Chris and I walked down to Coogee Beach at night with a cassette player and played both Blue Monday and The Beach (the B-side) while dancing on the beach. We ended up making a cover based on that experience. Thanks for explaining the background to the single! Great memories of a great time. There was so much amazing music in 1983 and 1984, and so many cool music experiences, like having a demo of the Fairlight CMI by Kim Ryrie in Wolloomooloo, and using the first computer MIDI interface in Australia. Blue Monday was definitely an inspiration at the time.

Doing some fine tuning on my subwoofer this morning I pulled out 2 copies of the Blue Monday 12" from the shelf. The first I tried was a later pressing and sorely in need of a clean, so I put it aside. The second was my original press in the die cut sleeve which worked fine. Having finished, I sat down with a coffee open my tablet and this video was the top of my KZbin screen entirely by accident. I now regret not buying tickets to Peter Hook and the light when they played not 60 Miles away in November. Never saw New Order or Joy Division but did see Monaco at Glastonbury.

No one ever mentions how New Order liked playing with our stereo speakers… I LOVED Perfect Kiss BECAUSE of the song bouncing back and forth btw my 2 speakers!! LOL… You can tell my age, listening to OLD music that was made BEFORE COMPUTERS and the DIGITAL AGE… All my favorites have been “Digitally Remastered”. Yeah, I laugh every time I tell a “kid” (anyone born AFTER the Millennium”) that I’m older than the INTERNET! Their reactions are SO FUNNY!! “WAIT! What??” “Yup, I remember a time BEFORE video games, KZbin, FaceBook and I even remember taking pictures, taking them to the local PhotoMat and waiting at least 5 days before I even saw what the pics even LOOKED LIKE!” They looked UTTERLY SHOCKED! I don’t even mention the old telephones. They’d completely lose their minds. Lord knows my nieces did and now they’re 13 and 11… So (and my oldest niece said this to me recently) now I’m not just “old”, I’m ANCIENT… “Thanks Joya, I needed that…NOT!” I don’t even FEEL OLD! Mentally, I’m forever 25!!
