"Time Being" should have been picked in the Bill Holman repertory. I heard the Buddy Rich Big Band version of that in that 1971 recording. Very difficult big band number. It seems like this should be "the John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" of big band music selections." It is difficult to play or perform but I like listening to it.

I played with Carl Saunders when I lived in Las Vegas from 1969 to 1974. Oh i was quite young. I was under 30. I went to Carl's apartment daily and played his compositions from lead sheets and he played piano. I played tenor saxophone and I could transpose easily at that time . His songs are great and we talked about a lot of things theoretically too, he also played some tapes for me from Sam Most playing Lover in every key. Really like a mentor in a way. I hate I hate to use that word but he was really hip to be with and we played and played for hours and hours on a daily basis so what can I say? You know and his trumpet playing out of this world! Bill Holman be in the same place musically as Carl!

The sound engineer (unlike the camera operator apparently) actually knows that a bass trombone exists in a big band. Very nice.

The camera operator knows full well of the bass trombone's existence. Unfortunately, musicians who hide their faces behind overly high music stands don't care about cameras. (With all due respect to the fine Paul Nelson.)
