Charles “Chuck” Feeney, 89, who cofounded airport retailer Duty Free Shoppers with Robert Miller in 1960, amassed billions while living a life of monklike frugality. As a philanthropist, he pioneered the idea of Giving While Living-spending most of your fortune on big, hands-on charity bets instead of funding a foundation upon death. Since you can't take it with you-why not give it all away, have control of where it goes and see the results with your own eyes?
Over the last four decades, Feeney has donated more than $8 billion to charities, universities and foundations worldwide through his foundation, the Atlantic Philanthropies. When I first met him in 2012, he estimated he had set aside about $2 million for his and his wife's retirement. In other words, he's given away 375,000% more money than his current net worth. And he gave it away anonymously. While many wealthy philanthropists enlist an army of publicists to trumpet their donations, Feeney went to great lengths to keep his gifts secret. Because of his clandestine, globe-trotting philanthropy campaign, Forbes called him the  James Bond of Philanthropy.
On September 14, 2020, Feeney completed his four-decade mission and signed the documents to shutter the Atlantic Philanthropies. The ceremony, which happened over Zoom with the Atlantic Philanthropies’ board, included video messages from Bill Gates and former California Gov. Jerry Brown. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi sent an official letter from the U.S. Congress thanking Feeney for his work.
At its height, the Atlantic Philanthropies had 300-plus employees and ten global offices across seven time zones. The specific closure date was set years ago as part of his long-term plan to make high-risk, high-impact donations by setting a hard deadline to give away all his money and close shop. The 2020 expiration date added urgency and discipline. It gave the Atlantic Philanthropies the time to document its history, reflect on wins and losses and create a strategy for other institutions to follow. As Feeney told me in 2019: “Our giving is based on the opportunities, not a plan to stay in business for a long time.”

I'm on the fence here because the definition of broke is not clear-cut. A survey in America by creditloan.com said that on average, people who had less than $900 USD in their bank account said they were broke. Your definition of broke maybe "I only have $10 in my pocket, and that's it", but then people dying from hunger in poor countries could just say "Nah fam, you're actually rich and privileged". For reference, Chuck donated at least 9 billion to charities and kept only around 2 million. That's 99.9777777778% of his money, gone. If I suddenly had to live on 0.0222222222222% of my current income, I'd say I'm broke. What's my point? Not sure tbh lol. Just presenting some facts that may change your perspective.

Andrew Carnegie who said “he wouldn’t pay his workers higher wages because they would drink it away.” Makes you wonder why those workers would drink it away. Maybe because the work was hard and after the Pinkerton Thugs killed striking workers Andrew Carnegie was an asshole. How about making the lives of your workers better as they are working for you not at the end of your life. High taxes exist to encourage higher wages through lower corporate revenue and income and better equipment through capital investments, not to horde it for yourself and stockholders.

@christianjire2739 4 жыл бұрын
@@pentrubarbati the thing is we all make choices in our lives so for some of us living something for our kids is what we want to do and for some of us don't want to 🤷🏾‍♂️. It's mostly about giving our kids and future generations a leg up because being poor isn't fun, and i know we keep telling eachother that if someone works hard they will succeed but seriously there are billions of people who have spent their entire lives working day in and day out and they still have nothing to their name. Most of the people who say that living your kids anything is wrong are people who grew up living a comfortable life, people who have never had to go hungry or have enough money to go to hospital or watch your mom work herself like a slave so just you could have some food. Money is not Evil like most people think, money is a tool and for me I'll want to leave my kids the necessary tools to make their life's a little bit easier 😌

This takes extreme dedication and selflessness. Imagine working your life amassing a fortune to decide that your money is worth more to others. The majority of us, no matter how rich, will never think of such feats. It is easy for us commemorate someone’s positive actions, but very hard to replicate. All of us will most likely never donate this amount even if we reach this level of wealth. That is because humans are by nature, selfish. Ask yourself this, in chance that you become this wealthy, will you contribute to such feats? Probably not.
