Harry doesn't trust adults because of his upbringing with the Dursleys. He is used to getting in trouble for talking. Also remember in the first movie when they went to tell Hagrid and McGonagall about the Sorcerer's Stone, and they wouldn't listen. The reason for the applause for Hagrid towards the end was actually bittersweet. It was to celebrate that he was finally proven innocent (for opening the Chamber of Secrets and releasing the “monster” which he was unfairly expelled from school for). Ron opens the Howler in the Great Hall because the longer you go without opening it...the worse it gets. That's why Neville tells Ron to open it..."I ignored one I got from my Gran once...it was horrible." . The ball that was chasing Harry during the Quidditch match was the Bludger. It's one of two balls that are used to knock players off balance/course/off their broom. The one chasing Harry had a spell put on it to only chase Harry, that's not something they are supposed to do which is how they knew something was wrong. . Ron doesn't get a new wand because wands are expensive. Ron's wand up until this point isn't even his wand, it's the wand of a dead great-uncle because they couldn't afford for him to get his own. In the books, Harry was impressed when he learned this because using the wand of another can be/is very difficult. Wands tend to only listen to the owner they choose. Ron was doing (relatively) well with hs magic and spell work regardless of having to use a wand that wasn't attuned to him. Some Side Trivia. Wands at the time cost 7 galleons which = $175 ..in 1993, adjusted it would = $378 in today's money . Fun detail..The crow of a rooster kills a Basilisk. Hagrid complains that someone is killing the chickens on the school grounds. You can see Hagrid holding a dead rooster when he rushes into Dumbledor's office to defend Harry. It's a nice little detail for something that was largely left out of the movie. (it was Ginny under the trance of Tom who killed them, that was where she got the blood to write the messages.)

@@Shan_Dalamani While that's technically true on paper, there's no question she is self-pitying, passive-aggressive, and hypersensitive. If I recall correctly, the main reason we believe she was bullied was her own interpretation of what happened, but her behavior shows that we can't trust her when she claims she's being victimized (she throws a fit when Ron is "mean" to her when he really isn't, after all). Even by her own admission, she was in the bathroom crying because someone was mean about her glasses (which wouldn't feel good, but isn't something to cry over for 50 years) so she blamed that girl for her death, and terrorized her as a ghost. So yes, technically Tom Riddle killed her, and that's tragic, but she clearly was not a good person. She actually relishes her death, and honestly, I think it's because it's the only instance she can genuinely claim victimhood, and since she values being a victim, it pleases her. That's objectively weird.

@@nebulousreactions Wow. How to tell me you've never been seriously bullied without typing the words. @@Shan_Dalamani And why do you assume she never had an opportunity to grow or learn? Other ghosts are shown to have the capacity to have new experiences and have character growth. Maybe if she hadn't spent 50 years feeling sorry for herself and moping in the bathroom, she'd have new experiences. You focused on this minute detail of what I said while ignoring the entire picture, which makes sense, given that if you focused on the entirety of my statement, it invalidates your argument. You conveniently did not address the fact that you have empathy for Myrtle but clearly not the girl she used her death to harass, particularly given that the girl likely wasn't even being mean to Myrtle in the first place. Myrtle gives unreliable testimony because she assumes EVERYONE is being mean to her when they aren't. Myrtle's behavior is not explained by being bullied or only being 14. That kind of behavior is excessive for a normal 14 year old. It's actually signs of a personality disorder (histrionic, in particular). If you think it's normal for a 14 to play the victim for sympathy to this degree, I don't know what to tell you except that you're wrong about that. I reserve my empathy for people who deserve it. . . like the girl who MAY have said a mean thing to Myrtle before she died and then paid for it with years of abuse by a ghost with a personality disorder that basically makes them a self-pitying drama queen to the max.

As others have pointed out, Harry's treatment from the Dursley's is the reason why he's reluctant to confide in adults. I'll go into a bit more detail. They were genuinely neglectful and abusive towards him, so Harry does not have healthy mechanisms in place when it comes to coping with stressors/trauma. His reaction to feeling pressured by Dumbledore to tell the truth is to lie, because that's most likely thing an abused child would do, as a way to protect themselves. This lack of healthy coping mechanisms comes into play in later behavior from Harry. Some people say he's a "brat" or "moody." Kid's been abused and then traumatized, so it's important to keep in mind moving forward. Good reaction! The new set up looks good 🙂

Dumbledore deliberately hired Lockhart to show Harry the result of the bad side of ego. He saw how Tom Riddle's ego contributed to becoming evil & wants to ensure Harry doesn't follow that path. The other Weasley brother (Percy) "not being in the picture" the next year & on was because he graduated! [In the books there is still a story line with him, as he wants to distinguish himself & after graduation goes to work for the Ministry, but not like his father in an area where he works a practical job. Instead he apprentices under the Minister himself, aiming for a political position of some sort in a few years. This leads to a side conflict with his parents & 2 oldest brothers, but it's not a big part of the story in how it affects Harry, so not included in the movies. He does eventually realise where his reasoning went wrong & makes up with his family before the big battle at the end of book 7, because he was at heart always a good guy despite being a stuck-up nerd. He is a Weasley, a Gryffindor, at his core even though he strayed a bit due to ambition.] If you read the books & pay attention to details regarding Weasley family dynamics that actually affect Harry as it shows how Ron's personality developed, the Weasleys had kept a gap of 2 years minimum between the births of their sons, planning well with practicality & finances in mind. Really after 4 pregnancies resulting in 5 boys (Charlie, Bill, Percy, then twins George & Fred) they felt they had plenty of family happiness. They could've stopped there & been fine. However Molly only ever having 2 older brothers (who she did love & was proud of as they died fighting the evil Grindlewald) was still very disappointed at not having a girl, something she'd hoped for for years to make up for never having a sister to share "girl/women things" with. While not a serious thing in perspective to the world's problems, her husband also thought it would be nice to have a girl too. A little copy of his wife, sweet but with hidden fire? Yes! So when the twins were over 1 Molly got pregnant again. Instead of a sister though, the twins & other older brothers got another brother. How boring. The sister Ginny is only 1 year younger than Ron though, meaning as soon as she could get pregnant Molly did again, rather than wait like usual. Once Ron was old enough to understand the math, his brothers (especially the twins) loved to tease him by pointing out to Ron that he was the "unwanted child". So unwanted that the parents got pregnant again asap! He should've been the daughter they wanted but instead was another boy, disappointing their parents! While in truth they did love Ron just as much, the parents were getting older. Thinking Molly was getting past her childbearing years, they unconciously were desperate to get that daughter & unintentionally neglected Ron just a bit during his toddler & preschool years since they had 3 older kids in school, younger twins that loved to get into mischief, & a baby girl to dote on in ways different from the boys. As a result, Ron didn't get as much "bonding time" as all the other boys did & truly felt lost in the shuffle, not loved as an individual as much, just "one of the boys". It didn't help that by the time he was 11 & going to school himself ALL his older brothers (including the twins who had only had 2 years of school) had distinguished themselves as good athletes, smart, & very talented at magic in at least 1 area. This gave Ron a psychological complex. On the surface he was fine, but deep down he truly felt inferior. Even his sister was special to both parents just for being a girl!! His inferiority complex combined with a hand-me-down wand meant Ron really didn't perform his best the 1st couple of years at Hogwarts. And you will see that inferiority complex rise up & get battled with occasionally when it comes to his friendship with Harry, his feelings for Hermione, & his performance at school. He pushes it away & makes progress, only for something to hurt his confidence again & then he has to find his self-worth again. While the books are centered on Harry, other characters like Ron, Hermione, Neville, Ginny, & more do show realistic personality changes from the mental & emotional growth that typically happens from preteen to early adulthood. I think it's one of the reasons so many kids like the series. Even if you don't identify with Harry much there is still likely a kid or adult side character that does emotionally resonate with you some.

So, Harry is protected by his mother's investment of love and protection placed on him just before Voldemort arrived to kill Harry, plus it was sealed in place by her sacrificing her life for him. This protection will wear off if he does not 'recharge' it by living at least a part of each year with a blood relative of his mother's; that would be his mother's sister, Petunia Dursley. As for the Dursleys, there's the backstory of Petunia being jealous that Lily got so much attention for being a witch and being invited to attend Hogwarts. Petunia even wrote Dumbledore and begged to be admitted, but what's the point of attending a school of magic when you have no ability? So Petunia was humiliated and anytime the subject of magic comes up, so does her bile. Then there is also the pride Vernon Dursley takes in being 'normal' and conforming, a value of the British middle class. Basically, the Dursleys hate all this 'magic' nonsense and how difficult it is to explain it to others in their social group. They are embarrassed by Harry's weirdness. They don't hate Harry, just the fuss and nonsense around this. They resent being forced to take care of Harry, but they don't HATE him. Just remember Vernon saying he 'intended to put a stop to all this nonsense'. ___________________________________________________ Hogwarts is mostly funded by the Ministry of Magic. The Ministry is the latest incarnation over the last thousand years or more of government-like institutions created mainly to keep the Wizarding World safe from the dangers of muggles. Wizards and witches are born with the ability to channel the vital force of magic; they have no individual choice about it. But muggles are fearful and suspicious creatures, thinking that magic-users will use their power to enslave or harm muggles. And those muggles who aren't afraid want to exploit the abilities of wizards/witches for their own benefit. Muggles historically exploit, extort, persecute, prosecute, torture, execute, and take possession of the property of those with magic ability. Sometimes it's just a lone wizard or witch, sometimes a family, sometimes an entire village or community. There's only so much that can be done to segregate from muggles, often making it better to just hide from muggles and pretend magic isn't real. Institutions like the Ministry of Magic were developed to protect the Wizarding World from muggles' knowledge or awareness. One area of concern is children. They need to be educated and trained in magic but they also could innocently reveal what the Ministry is trying to shield from muggles. So, regional schools like Hogwarts have been established to standardize a high level of magical knowledge and technique while both modeling responsible behavior and controlling where and when magic is in use. And as the work of these schools protect the Wizarding World, it makes sense for schools like Hogwarts to be as affordable as possible. The Ministry of Magic underwrites nearly all expenses: staff, building maintenance, meals, most school supplies and tools. Students and their families only have the expense of personal items: robes, wand, cauldron, a few basic textbooks and small amounts of supplies. They can bring a pet, but the pet must be mostly self-reliant (undemanding for housing/nesting, able to hunt for its own food, able to eliminate outdoors); generally, that means cats, owls, toads, rats.

In the HP universe, as some kind of "balancing of power" by the universe/its Creator, magic & technology don't combine well. So things like the Hogwarts Express (which took many wizards together to imbue with the charms it has on it & to erase the memories of it being commisioned & bought from all the muggles involved in making it) & the flying car (which Mr Weasley kept as a curiosity to study after it was seized in a raid by his department on a wizard doing unsanctioned experiments) are unusual. That's why digital cameras & such aren't in daily use by wizards. The magic inside their bodies causes it to fritz a lot. This "balancing of power" is also why time turners with capability of more than 1 day have severe limitations & effects if you even succeed in making one. This why in Prisoner of Azkaban Hermione says "awful things happen to wizards that mess with time", but historical clarity on why they are controlled by the Ministry doesn't happen until the Cursed Child. It's also part of how Grindlewald instilled fear in many wizards as World War II approached. His visions of muggle atomic bombs showed that guns weren't even the most danger wizards could face from muggles. So this is a large part of the Grindlewald plot from the Fantastic Beasts prequels to HP. The new super powerful weapons couldn't be opposed with magic, at least not without many very skilled wizards researching & testing for a long time. So Grindlewald wanted wizards to rise up & take over the world, put muggles in their place before it was too late.

The question about why the Dursleys didn't want to send Harry away to hogwarts despite hating him - it was due to a couple of reasons. First one being (as corny as it sounds) that they were his family so it was this sense of responsibility they had towards him, which they loathed of course and they took that frustration out on Harry all the while believing they were the good guys for taking Harry in the first place. Another big reason was that they HATED magic and considered it to be abnormal - so when Lily and James died they probably thought they could keep Harry away from that life. And finally (this is just my opinion and not official canon) one of the main things is that they are jealous bullies/abusers. Its very obvious that Petunia was probably envious of Lily and her and Vernon are the kind of people that relished in the fact that while they couldn't do anything about Lily and James, they saw their chance to treat Harry (who was young and vulnerable) poorly as punishment for their miserable views. And abusers and bullies are like that. They hate your presence in their life and love to remind you that you are a burden, yet they want to control you and keep you from living your best life.

@@joshandcaseyI understand it was a bit more complicated than that. I remember JK explaining it somewhere. She loved her sister very much and they used to be very close when little girls until Lily's powers started to show and she got her letter to Hogwarts. It came between them. She was jealous and even angry because she was hurting so much over the loss of Lily. First the magic and wizarding world took her sister from her - she went to where Petunia could not follow her as Petunia did not have these powers and then Lily got killed. As much as Petunia is concerned, wizarding world robbed her from someone who was very dear to her and so she had mixed feelings about it she was unable to process (Lily abandoning her twice, she just cannot forgive Lily) and Harry was one of "them", looking like his father (yet having Lily's eyes). She actually knows and understands some things about that world (there are some details in the books).
