I also remember when Seo Taiji debuted (I was ten years old!) and my mind was totally blown then too. Even me, with little contact with other Koreans as a youth, knew Korea was changing based on the music alone. The birth and discovery of kpop saved me. Nineties kpop was the best. ❤️🇰🇷

Seo Taiji is really special because he is not just special in terms of music, but he has completely changed the Korean music industry. The concept of comeback comes from Seo Taiji. Before there was a concept of comeback, the singer didn't have any special authority, but Seo Taiji didn't want to do it. He wanted a cycle of making songs with plenty of rest, working for some time, relaxing and making songs. That's why I did it, but it was possible because it was Seo Tai-ji, and after that, everyone followed suit and became a culture.

I am a 2nd gen fan and this documentary made me so so grateful for the 1st gen groups and artists who paved the way and thrived through the difficult years of introducing pop to Korea. Seo Taiji, H.O.T, S.E.S, Sech Kies and Fin.K.L are just some of the many groups that inspired the following generation that we now love. They are the real superiors, the legends that our idols idolized. The pioneers whom we should always remember. 💖

This first episode is great because it is set in a time before any kpop companies existed. The artists directly interviewed or featured are Key Boys from the 60s, JinJoo Lee, DJ Soulscape, Lee Kisang, CLON, Jae Chong (Solid) and ends with a feature about Seo Taiji. NONE of these are with any of the current kpop management companies so that is nice to see.
@sonnyray3 жыл бұрын
YHS the founder of YG was part of Soetaiji and boys and you can literally see him several times on this video. There are also features with some YG artists there.
@userkmunhwaock3 жыл бұрын
@@sonnyrayEveryone knows YG was a member of Seo Taiji and Boys. But at the time of the events shown in this episode YG had not formed his company yet. The only YG artist actually interviewed in this episode is Danny Im from 1TYM and he is also speaking about the early 90s period before YG and other current companies existed. So the original comment is accurate because the events covered in this episode all occurred before current kpop companies existed and none of the artists actually interviewed (not just shown briefly) are currently with a kpop management company.

I think the reason, and correct me/ lmk your thoughts, is because kpop is more than just music. By that I mean, it’s not just music, because there are expectations that excess just music. The expectations in kpop are insanely high within the artist in all aspects. Kpop, at least the more well known image of it, involves dancing, and performing. Sure western artists do the same, but kpop is built on the idea of performing. Every album/song an artist comes out with will usually have a song, dance, and performances. Every song/album, which is called a comeback, is meticulously thought out, more than just the music. It’s a dance, a performance and the music videos tend to be extremely cinematic. I think the whole difference is that kpop is a performance. It’s really hard to explain to people who don’t like kpop but as someone who thought kpop was the weirdest thing to eventually loving it, kpop is seriously more than just music (:
@bluestone55443 жыл бұрын
@@AnAdultKpopFan I kinda agree with that but you seem to precive kpop as more than just a music and more as an art is because it involves more performing like dancing (based on what I've understood by your comment so correct me if I'm wrong) and other people may precive different genre of music as art in different ways For example, hip hop used to focus more on expressing your feelings lyrically rather than focusing on crazy chords and melodies but we can't say that hip hop is just a genre of music since many consume it as art In conclusion, what I'm trying to say is that Art is subjective, some may think classical music as just a boring genre while other take it as an art. So not only kpop every genre of music is Art imo
@AnAdultKpopFan3 жыл бұрын
@@bluestone5544 Absolutely! Art is completely subjective. For me personally, I love dancing. It has been a passion to me for so long, but unfortunately I never had the money growing up to get into dancing. I think that is why I'm so drawn to kpop and I think others are too. These kpop idols are trained for years to be performers. They train for years to become dancers, the best form of singers they can be etc. There is obviously a lot more to kpop than just music and dance and I probably should've expanded on that earlier. I am just drawn to the dance aspect so that is why I mentioned it. I think it would be a lie to say the kpop space is similar to the Western one because it's not. They're different and absolutely, art is completely subject. I don't think there is anything wrong with either Kpop or Western music, I like them both for different reasons. I just think I'll always appreciate kpop a little bit more because it has a lot of things that I am hugely interested in. I think, for me, I'm really tired of the way Kpop is treated nowadays. There is a lot of racism and xenophobia surrounding it. A lot of people call it artificial and what not and although there are definitely issues in kpop, I don't find it to be artificial. Again, it's just a different "industry" I guess, for a lack of a better word. They both create music, but are different in their own ways.
