Director of Research at Cointelegraph here, thank you for the video Peter. I got goosebumps listening to this brilliant discussion. Bitcoin is sound money, and a sound money monetary system allows each individual to feel empowered and responsible for themselves. When the government takes away our power to make decisions, we never get the opportunity to feel dignity. Dignity comes from being proud of our past decisions and feeling confidence in making new decisions. Providing for ourselves and our families and feeling proud of our ability to do so has been robbed by the victim mentality that the government has perpetuated in order to justify their never ended growth in the government’s reach since we left the gold standard. Thank you John Vallis for your article on what is freedom.

I remain on the fence regarding security. I think I agree that bc is much more difficult for an "authority" to confiscate, and I think agree private keys are mathematically unfeasible to hack. But why can't a "mining" operation be directed to find any wallet? Not a specific wallet, but any wallet? Seems like the as # of wallets ( and private keywords) are created the more of a pool and hence the more tempting to "fish" in it. I assume there is a good answer for this I have just not heard this discussed. Thanks for the great discussions and content.
@ScottSheppardTheWombat2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is one of those fringe type questions. The answer is that it's probably possible, but it's more economically rewarding to just mine Bitcoin. So why waste your resources looking for someone's wallet when you could earn $180,000+ for mining honestly.

Collectivism works extremely well, just not at scale. We evolved to live within Dunbar's number where the tribe created the culture as they lived. The living culture at this level did not codify the oppression of law, as law was created by all the people interdependently feeding back on every other person. The "collective" was the governance of the people. Collectivism under scale, especially under statism, is a nightmare. But it isn't the only form of collectivism.

We are so early that we are incapable of seeing everything possible with Bitcoin and the Bitcoin Network. One thing that doesn't yet exist will be built / done with Bitcoin. Then someone else will build on that. Now there are 2 new things that exist. This cycle feeds on itself. Bitcoin 20 years from now will be seen vastly different that we see it today. As our understanding increases and evolves more will be possible. We are so early. This is not just some cliche statement, it is a fact. Bitcoin is only 13 years old. Bitcoin is capable of so many things. So many that we cannot yet fathom. But if Bitcoin only does just one thing - be sound money - that is enough. Sound money alone is enough to change the world. This shows how powerful this network will be. The importance and magnitude cannot be overstated. Bitcoin will be woven into our daily lives on a base level. It will be utility. These are the early days. Very exciting times my friend.

Peter, does it make a lot of sense to put out one of the most successful bitcoin podcasts out there, that more and more people are coming to for education, to then discuss your and/or others’ use of hallucinogenic drugs? Your show man but not sure that helps the movement or the message. Or maybe you guys can explain it’s connection to bitcoin that should want us to buy more bitcoin? Or maybe you will get the opposite effect. Don’t know.

Thanks for your show; I'm a long time listener. I notice that you explore many topics that have been debated for centuries, yet often no consideration is given to how those topics were addressed by those who came before us. It feels like you and your guests are often reinventing the wheel and dismissing or ignoring the insights and formulations of previous generations. Personally, I don't think that we (now living) are the best and brightest to have inhabited planet earth. We would do well to rediscover the wisdom of our predecessors. To do that we must read long dead authors.

Unfortunately, vastly more will continue to fall behind at an accelerating rate while just a small number find crypto changing their lives in any significant way. Most people can't afford a $500 emergency, much less put $500 a month into BTC. I'm accumulating what I can, but bitcoin would have to hit those truly astronomical levels we were hearing about last year for it to do anything stunning for me. And the more it goes up, the greater those multiples would have to be to make any difference in the life of a new buyer. A small few will get ahead, but the vast majority are highly unlikely to experience the positive effects we often think bitcoin will bring about. Heck, not even every millionaire will have a bitcoin, so the amount that the guy working at the corner grocery store can get will probably on average be something on the order of a tiny, tiny fraction.

What Does “Freedom” Mean? Is “freedom” a useful concept? Can a social environment be meaningfully described in terms of “freedom”? Spokesmen for the political-economic status quo assert that man is, in large measure, a “slave” of his environment and his personal limitations and thus is never really free. This implies that acts or threats of violence inflicted on one man by other men are no more oppressive than are the misfortunes and restrictions inflicted on man by his physical environment; that, for example, a state edict to pay taxes or be imprisoned is not fundamentally different from the biological need to obtain food or starve. If this view were correct, then freedom would be a sociological myth and all arguments for freedom would be empty phrases. A meaningful concept of freedom can not include immunity from natural phenomena. A man is obviously never “free” from the principles of gravity nor “free” from the necessity of sustaining his own life (so long as he chooses to live.) What is the significant difference between constraints imposed on a man by other human beings and the requirements of physical reality? Man’s physical environment is mechanistic; it is not volitional. Man’s ability to function within his environment is limited only by his intelligence and knowledge and by intrinsic physical properties of the environment. Man may choose to increase his knowledge and devise ingenious ways to overcome apparent environmental constraints. And the environment continues to function in a potentially predictable manner, devoid of conscious intent. Man possesses and may use intelligence to alter his environment but his physical environment has no intelligent purpose to oppose man. In contrast, constraints imposed on a man by other men can be the result of conscious, calculated, volitional intent. Purposeful attempts by a victim of force to regain his freedom can be opposed and negated by the purposeful counteractions of the coercers. Men bent on the forceful imposition of their demands can be a vastly more serious threat, a vastly more severe restriction on human action than are the non-reasoning forces of nature. For this reason “freedom”, defined as the absence of physical force initiated by intelligent beings, is a meaningful concept. “Freedom” is a vital component of human effectiveness and fulfillment. (from LIBERAL INNOVATOR, volume 1, number 4, May 1964) excerpted from: VONU - The Search For Personal Freedom by Rayo

Some insight: Freedom doesn't exist. It's an illusion. Total illusion. All the way down to freedom of the wills, and all the way up to political and more advanced notions of freedom. There is access, that's true. But never will you find anything in life without conditions, nor consequences. I.e. since no alleged free thing is without both, nothing is free. In fact it's specifically because there is only conflict that we adapt. That we have eyes, ears, countries, etc. Conflict is everything. The crimes of the world revolve around people who pretend like consequences aren't real, or who overlook conditions. The American pretty much said it in another way, and did use the verb to access. That is the real magic in life. Access. Doing. But not freedom. Freedom is one of the biggest myths of all time. "Without constraints" makes no sense. Nothing is without constraints, regardless of how negligible those constraints may at first seem.
