These Sony non-Spidey Spider-Man movies feel like a throwback to the mid-2000s era where Hollywood still hadn't mastered the superhero formula. Makes you realize that, for all the MCU's production troubles, they don't lack confidence in their ability to tell stories. Or get weird. They could just afford to cut down on how many are released a year.

Exactly, not every cinematic universe needs to have some epic Avengers-esque team up with characters that are blatantly introduced just for that team up. Something like Star Trek did this shit way better decades ago because it was organic storytelling that just so happened to be in the same universe that had all these other characters. You never saw some cringe team up between Picard, Sisko and Janeway because that's not a story, it's a marketing gimmick. And the one time they did try doing something like that (Generations) it was fucking awful and they never tried it again.

It's interesting how, despite being part of the greater MCU, Homecoming is pretty grounded and keeps things local for a Spider-Man film. No Way Home is good, and I like good chunk of Far From Home, but as the MCU continues to expand, it's often taken Spider-Man outside of his friendly neighborhood and kept his stories from being small scale and personal.
@GuineaPigEveryday
@GuineaPigEveryday 6 ай бұрын
And what i find fascinating is that whereas the ending of Far From Home started building big, and Peter being way out of his comfort zone and being asked to deal with threats he couldn’t handle, and then Spiderman No Way Home went extremely big but even the MCU were smart enough to end that film by taking him right back to where everyone wanted him in the first place. Just him, in an apartment, by himself, no iron man, right back to his roots. For all the shit MCU gets they knew that they had to bring it back to the core of who spiderman is, and that ending got a lot of ppl excited for the possibilities of your ‘friendly neighbourhood spiderman’ now that no one knows who he is anymore. This is something Sony did not even have the patience to think about, or the brains, when they made a movie about three spiderwomen preventing a clairvoyant spider-dude trying to prevent Peter Parker from existing and making Parker some divine chosen-one spider-person whose existence is crucial to the universe.

Its the same problem Marvel had, which is that people mostly just want Iron Man. So they needed to stick him in everywhere. Otherwise their movies had a much tougher time, unless they fluked into a release with little competition or had a really excellent script. As mentioned, it makes more sense just to have one spiderman a year, and stick your other stuff on streaming services. Kraven the Hunter? Madame Web looked halfway interesting, but tying it into spiderman seemed pointless. But studio executives have little risk so usually are content to just throw shit at a wall and see what sticks. After No Way Home I think it makes more sense to simply go back to making movies with THREE different spidermen in diffferent universes.

Everybody has an opinion, the problem is that usually creators are reaching when they have to introduce space. He also lead the avengers and all kinds of other shit,but most poeple know the friendly neighbourhood spider man. I WAS going to disagree with that, becasue I thought Homecoming was boring as hell, and Far from Home was way too much 'high school shit'. But then I looked at the box office, and clearly it resonated with a LOT of people. Even Thor and Ant Man were doing under a billion. Homecoming is the most skippable and forgettable MCU film. You could literally go from Civil War to Infinity War and you miss nothing. The whole trilogy was wasted potential. Conflicts should've been way more personal to Peter/Spiderman, and they needed to actually build up his world within the MCU instead of trying to connect everything to the MCU.

Keep in mind that there are tons of comics outside of Marvel/DC that have absolutely nothing to do with superheroes. I'd absolutely recommend starting reading comics in general as you're bound to discover a lot of different stories from across different genres and art styles that could be to your liking. Another reminder in case you stumble upon the term: "graphic novels" are the same thing as "comics". It's just a marketing trick the legendary Will Eisner used to get people to take comics more seriously (as they deserve to).

@owenleal
@owenleal 5 ай бұрын
As someone who used to collect mostly Marvel and of those Marvel comics mostly spiderman, I would advise caution. Counterintuitively, as the superhero/comicbook genre of movies have become more lucrative, actual comics have gone on the decline hugely. If you look at Marvel's business model for example, it seems that they are focussed on creating marketable enough stories and characters to be used as fodder for the MCU. All this to say two things: 1) this is about to be a niche hobby and niche hobbies are expensive. Comic shops are few and far between and so your best bet is to go to somewhere like a Forbidden Planet or another big chain store to get started, and they will cost a pretty penny. 2) the quality of stories you find may not be worth the money you spend on the hobby. Remember many comics are sealed in a plastic envelope, so there is no 'try before you buy' element to picking one up like with manga or novels. Maybe if you stick to the older more prestige stories that you get in like, the big compilations like the Marvel Definitve series but when it comes to the newer stories, what with the cynical direction that Marvel has gone in, you might find yourself disappointed, especially if you are going to be seeking out Spiderman specifically. There are a few exceptions, like the last I checked they were doing some really fun and fresh stuff with the X-Men, but if its Spiderman you want then prepare for heartbreak. Another thing, its gonna be hard for you to just jump into Marvel like that. Marvel more than any other line, including DC follows this continuous soap opera approach to story telling. Basically most every plot point you read will tie back into some other plot point. If you ever try to just jump into an episode of Eastenders or Hollyoaks, you will find yourself in a similar position to reading a Marvel comic. Kudos to them that they do make an effort to clue you in on the story so far and what is going on, but those efforts have become decreasingly useful as time has gone on. If you get overly obsessed with finding out what the hell is going on, you will find yourself poring over issues from like 5 years ago, because yes they will reference material from that far back and from comics that arent even in the same run as the comic you are currently reading. This isnt like reading a manga where, no you cant really just start in the middle and know what is happening, but at the same time there is a chapter 1 so that you can start at the beginning and catch up, Marvel does not have a beginning, there is nowhere for you to jump on so that you can get your bearings and you'll have to make your peace with that. Maybe you open an issue and Iron Man is evil today. Maybe you open an issue and the X Men have established a colony on Mars with magic plants and are doing a Game of Thrones/Dune type thing off by themselves removed from any other characters. Maybe you open an issue and those two references are several months or years outdated. And you just have to be like "okay. Im fine with this. This is what we're doing."

This seems like possibly the most of a longshot of what have produced since doing their Spiderman adjacent films. Venom/Morbius/Kraven are pretty well known by the core audience, that at least theoretically can translate directly to an action film's lead. Madame Web seems most known for facilitating dumping exposition to Spiderman and setting him on a path. Sure that can be a role in a movie, but really only seems to warrant her own film if Soniverse already had the kind of success early phases of MCU was having. Made even weirder by seems like running with webslinger variant(s) that probably are not even top five, maybe not even top ten if include multiple versions of peter. Plus changing most attributes the character is known for is hardly appealing to anyone who knows the character, and it does not exactly seem like changes are exactly a huge draw that will bring in a ton that did not know the character.

They have learned nothing from that Morbius fiasco (who was a character that works best when he is not tied directly to Spider-Man). There is a lot of good stories that should get a cinematic treatment. Aside from the animated Miles and a serious Venom vs Carnage this decade for Sony’s Spider was obvious: Spidey vs Kraven, Spidergirls vs Morlun, Venom vs sym-soldiers, Spider-Woman, Spidey & FF vs Sinister Six, Venom vs Knull (with GotG guest starring if possible), Spidey + Venom vs Red Goblin, Spider Island with clones, Spidey meets Deadpool. By now they have made a comedy out of Venom, used the villains team-up concept, probably wasted Kraven and those female Web characters are not looking very enticing.

I don’t have an issue with less known or “important” characters getting these movies, but when they feel super transparent about building a franchise in place of just building out these characters and stories in their own right is where it loses me. In comics I like when I can read a comic and if there are events that do tie into other issues I have the option not to read them without feeling like I’m missing too much. The way the MCU is currently structured it feels like there’s an expectation you consume everything they put out and it ends up costing the characters and individual movies. If the kraven and madam web movie end up just being individual stories about these characters I could be on board but as it is right now I just don’t trust these studios.

Do Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Andrew Garfield and Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi. After No Way Home, I feel like audiences could handle multiple Spider-Man film franchises and understand that these are alternate universes. Sony could release an actual Spider-Man movie every year this way. The only potential problem I can see is if their deal with Marvel to let Spider-Man be in the MCU has some sort of clause that says they can't make their own Spider-Man films about Peter Parker (which is why they are focusing on Miles and the villains).

The problem with the Sony-Verse is that it has no centric point of reference. The Raimi films ended with 3 because of sony's insistence of cramming more villains for profit, resulting in the 4th film getting cancelled. The Amazing Spider-Man ended while hinting at expanding on the universe further, but then it got canned. Then Venom entered the picture, but he exists in a world currently without a Spider-Man. Morbius follows the same pattern, but became a glorified meme rather than a box office hit. Then, Marvel's Spider-Man introduces both Tobey and Andrew's Spider-Men back into the continuation suggesting they all co-exist with each other, and some of Marvel's versions of villains are now hoping dimensions for no apparent reason, like Vulture joining up with Morbius. Teaming up potentially with Sony's Kraven or some form of the Sinister Six who all seem to have their own seperate stories outside of involving Spider-Man. None of them have a reason to team up together at all. And now we have Madam Web coming out that introduces variants of different Spider-people with potentially a new Peter Parker being set up, which would now also co-exist with Sony's other 2 Spider-Men and Marvel's Spider-Man (who I'm sure want another Spider-Man team up movie at some point). So... Where does all of this fit in? If Sony is really trying to make their universe work, they're currently killing it before it even gets off the ground. Not only is it now being confused between dimensions (Marvel and Sony verse) with characters who have no vendetta against Spider-Man or have any real relation to him, nor have we had any build up of this version's Spider-Man before more obscure characters in the Mythos get their own personal movie. And the last thing the Marvel Spider-Man films need right now is more deadweight storytelling with their multiverse of sadness. I don't hate the concept, but I liked superhero movies back when it was about the superhero. Is it too much to ask to see Peter try to live his life from scratch while trying to be the hero everybody knows but doesn't remember the identity of? Can we finally get to see Black Cat and Spider-Man together in a live action film? Can it focus on Peter's struggle to accept the balance of life instead of being paired up with mentor hero figure again and again?

This whole situation is really sad, because a connected universe based on Spiderman's side of Marvel Comics is possible (hell, comics have been doing it for years, especially in the 90s when Spiderman was practically keeping Marvel comics afloat on its own). Imagine, an entire sub-section of the MCU dedicated to Spiderman and his rogue's gallery managed by Sony, while Disney takes care of bigger and larger stuff with other characters. Kind of like what Netflix did with the Defenders shows: a smaller section of the MCU that isn't required to understand the larger MCU as a whole, but still fits in and is enjoyable for hardcore fans... and yet almost ten years later, Sony and Disney don't seem to understand this kind of mutual beneficial opportunity and prefer to be at eachother's throats because MONEY...

I think you hit the nail on the head. (Or perhaps strummed the right string of the web). I feel like Keven Feige was always hoping to do what you suggest, but I don't think Amy Pascal did. I think Pascal is the problem as far as the relationship between the two studios, but at the same time, there were other executives who would have never cooperated at all. You would think that after the success of no way home they would simply build a Garfield multiverse up a bit more. "I want to fight an alien," - but this plan was in motion since before No Way Home and they have stubbornly stuck to it.

Imagine this as a Spider-Man post credits scene. We open up outside of the window of an apartment building, as camera moves forward we see Peter, his sitting at his desk with a sewing kit trying to patch his suit. The camera morphs through his window and slowly rotates around him as we watching him intensely concentrating on fixing his suit. As the shot rotation comes to the back of his head we start to see a color temp change, a yellow tint the slowly glows as the camera continues to rotate. Something is going on. The Peter tingle activates. Time slows, the sound of the city gets muffled, the camera moves closer to Peter’s head. He’s stopped sewing and begins to look up, we see how the yellow glow from behind him is now casting a shadow of Peter. As we get to his face the camera is close, his head taking up most the fame. He is staring almost as if looking at us, with intense focus. We stay here for a second as we see the yellow glow behind him finish growing. He suddenly whips around and shoots a web, it goes into the light and disappears. He stands, ready for a fight when we start to see someone come through. “Hello to you to Spider-Man” we hear as the Sylvie emerges through the time door brushing the remaining webbing off her. Cut to black.

If these movies are not sucessful, they will pull Spidey from the MCU and try to do their own movies again. Which would be better for spiderman but suck for the MCU

@@writingrefmove that Loki provides Spider-Man a window into the spider verse, which would allow them to connect all the Sony stuff togeather while having some continuity. And since they use tech to travel and not magic, it isn’t going to be character dependent. Not to mention, Spider-Man is a tech guy, not a magic guy so this fits better.

Madam Web is a character that did not need a solo movie, just like Morbius, and to some extent even Venom initially. They're all intrisically tied to Spider-Man, so I see no reason why they would stand up without Spider-Man nearby. I *wish* Venom was introduced in a proper Spider-Man movie because Eddie's vendeta against Peter is such a major point of the character, but oh well, legal reasons prohibited it. Still, Madam Web only appears when the "destiny" of Spider-Man is at play, which I also don't quite like. The expansion of the Spider-Man mythos kinda robbed that feeling of just a random guy who got the powers. Idk man, I can't have any good expectations for movies these days, when a good one comes out it's a big surprise and an exception

The most exciting part of No Way Home was that it finally left Peter in a very grounded, classic Spider-Man set up so I really hope cooler heads prevail (maybe Feige can convince them that the rumored plan is an awful idea). And if they are dead set on making movies with side characters & villains then they need to ditch the idea of connecting them and just focus on telling unique & interesting stand-alone stories with the characters they choose. Just because people love Spider-Verse doesn't mean EVERY Spidey project needs to be that big in scope. I was actually a little annoyed when it was shoehorned into a sidequest in Spider-Man 2 on PS5.

Here's the part that boggles my mind about these films and it's insane because it would be a very clever fan demanded thing that would actually make all of these ideas work, but the trade-off is that Sony would have to give a shit love and or care about the comics. In the comics recently, there's been an arc where Norman Osborne of the Green goblin has cured himself. Thanks to Peter, He now works for the adult Peters company and he has reformed himself as the gold goblin which is essentially a good guy version of the Green goblin that he used to be. 100% cured. He is not only struggling with this new change of heart but is also incredibly guilt-ridden as his entire terrible pass is come back to haunt him. At the end of no way home all the villains are cured of whatever issue that made them into a villain and were sent back to their timelines. The audience I believe would totally eat up a gold goblin movie starring William Dafoe the meme guy. Great actor that everyone loves playing a reformed Green goblin that is being now reverse mentorship by a retired Spider-Man in Tobey Maguire. Have all the other villains spur up in Toby's universe or crossover into it including venom and then have gold goblin with a potential because everything so desperate returning Toby Spider-Man as an older man Spider-Man against the sinister 6. Holy fucking shit. I would go see that. I know a ton of people that would go fucking see that. That's what they should have built this villain cinematic universe around. If they want a sequel like phase 2 have it were Toby unfortunately runs into the comics Superior Spider-Man ark either with doc Ock from a different universe or a different villain. Even though it sounds dumb on paper, a Spider-Man villain universe could work but it would only work if not only do the gold goblins storyline, but have it be a giant well acted nostalgia trip from the Spider-Man movies that started all of this. Is literally on a silver platter by Sony but Sony is too fucking arrogant and incompetent to ever try to do this because again they would have to actually like and engage in comic books which they never have done.

I kind of assume a lot of this is to build up that universe that Amy Pascal wanted to have circa 2014 or 2015, I forget, that would've had the whole Sinister Six movie. And would have this female superhero team made up of Spider-Man characters. I forget the roster. I think it was: Black Cat, Jackpot, Silver Sable, Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) I forget who else. I have no idea how accurate this is. I think I recall first hearing about this around 2017 or so via one of those videos from Midnight's Edge. I think their source might've been the Sony hacks from 2014.

Heres an idea for a 4th movie: The Raid meets Spiderman. Basically it’s similar to the movie “The Raid” or “Dread”. In this movie. Spiderman is investigating a vigilante in Hells Kitchen. Tracks him down in an abandoned building. Peter tangles with vigilante Daredevil. However, they both realize they are both being hunted themselves. They soon find out that Kraven and his militia have been hired to take out both Spiderman and Daredevil. The building is rigged to trap both heroes inside. We can have a good dynamic between Peter and Matt. Also by the resolution you find out Kraven was hired by Kingpin.

Boy do I hope Spider-Man 4 leans classic Spider-Man. Also tying up the previous movies' loose threads. Fighting Michael Keaton's Vulture and Michael Mando's Scorpion, maybe fighting Donald Glover's Prowler too and meeting the MCU's Miles Morales, getting a job at the Daily Bugle. Heck, throw in Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin, Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio and Bokeem Woodbine's Shocker for a fun Sinister Six-type villain team. Good ol' fashioned Spider-Man. Back to basics.

But I thought i saw something about maybe a younger person taking up that mantle in the last decade or something. Thought maybe it was Julia Carpenter wearing a red leather jacket and red sunglasses that took up the mantle or something. Unsure. I haven't really read that section of Spider-Man, I think I might've skimmed some of the spiderverse stuff and thought I saw that. Or maybe I'm just mixing stuff up. 🤷‍♂

The thing that baffles me about these films is that they're based on characters who for the most part are too obscure to general audiences, so the only real audience is hardcore fans, but then Sony completely reshapes the characters to mostly being unrecognisable and lacking almost all of the appeal of the original characters, so there's no real audience for them. Like you said they shouldn't try to be like the MCU and instead should turn to being different kinds of films. They've got a bunch of villainous and morally questionable characters, some being straight forward criminals and other being the results of horrifying experiments or accidents. There's so much room there for unique types of films with varying genres, horror, sci-fi, thriller, drama, full-on character studies, heist movies, you name it. Plus plenty of Spider-Man's villains have origins which don't require Spider-Man to be present, so technically there is room for them to have a one-off story (aside from Venom's origin which I think is a big factor for the disconnect lots of people have with that version).

I have not seen one of thee Spider-Man-less Spider-Man spinoffs from Sony, and I don't intend to now. I don't want to encourage that behavior. I don't even know if they're set in the same universe as Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2, or if they're in their own thing. What I want from a 4th MCU Spider-Man movie (I have no idea what they'll do, this is just my fan wish) is to keep teaming him up with more established MCU heroes, and for this one, Daredevil. To build up from that cameo with Matt Murdock in No Way Home, and to team up against The Kingpin. For a 5th one, I'd team-up Spidey with The Hulk. Don't know which villain of villains yet.

its sort of a case of 1 These bad guys are known from the comics , the work with Spiderman because that is how they are introduced 2 people don't know who these are because they don't read comics and don't watch cartoons so they need the character set up 3 You don't need Spiderman to set them up. You can bounce them off of Blade or Fantastic Four or X-men or Avengers or Dare Devil or Punisher or Ghost Rider but a lot of them don't work on there own. 4. Some characters have one certain image, gender, race, age that comic fans see them as and while non-comic readers won't get it, comic fans will be heavily distracted if a character has just all the wrong parts. We ID characters quickly and if you change that it takes us out. 5. Some times its better to just have people exist and not need a reason. We don't want the main character of a story to be evil and we don't want a bad guy to be sympathetic we just need them to be a threat. giving each character there own movie is a thing we do for the Audience who is mostly wealthy good looking people who follow sports and news papers and consider cartoons and comics beneath them and only read novels and see illustrations as for kids and cartoons as nonsense. These moves are not for the comic fan who grew up on cartoons and never gave up cartoons and knows these characters and dresses as them and memorized there trivial facts. If they were the audience we could skip introductions and get right to the fight. the world is run by people who don't own TVs and consider fun beneath them, out grown. They need exposition. and its ruled by a world that believes every one is human and relatable and not evil and needs a hug and forgiveness and they don't want to accept that some people are just unforgivably evil for no reason and need to die. and we live in a world where Death is a happy ending. Not jail time followed by getting out of jail. Thats why we have Cruella, Maleficent, Darth Vader, Boba Fet, Magneto, Deadpool, Storm Shadow, Nick Furry, Solo, Black Widow, Mufasa, Wolverine, Gambit, Steel, Cat Woman, Constantine, Black Addam, Vixen, Joker, All these side characters getting there own story. Some times people just need to look cool and exist. they don't need an origin. They don't need to be explained. They just need to show up. its also important to remember if a character has an iconic part that they start with it rather then earn it at the end

The fact that every single superhero franchise rn is doing a multiverse is one of the most painfully transparent things Ive ever seen and it kinda makes me sick. Spiderverse was cool because it was unique. Now suddenly we have all these copycats following suit, utterly devoid of creativity just trying to muscle in on the hype of that plot element. It reminds me of when botw came out and it had that cel shaded artstyle that really popped and then every other videogame wanted to have a cel shaded art style too.
