It's hard to sort out "who started it" and "did it ever stop" People can show how someone else told them to And people can show how they all were just going with what's popular and they all only meant to make a living. There's a reason that the world that produced this, leads up to WW2. And Hitler didn't have his ideas on his own. He heard them from Henry Ford who heard them from someone else. Conspiracy theories just spreading. And getting out of hand. I pity that people got hurt real bad by it. But honestly it's hard to figure out how to fix the world. They thought they were being either good, or funny. They thought the horrors were over so it was time to relieve stress and make parodies. Thought they'd freed the slaves and deserved a break from war. That just movies isn't so bad. And they were ignorant of some things and just accepting of other things. But really, its the same today. The bottom is poorer than the middle realizes. It's not over. Parodies can hurt feelings and come across as cringe and callous and tone deaf. Other people do worse. It's all messed up. And sometimes they want to represent things but they're too dumb to do it accurately and it reveals not even as much their hate but their ignorance. Like.....the way William Shatner overacts his lines. When you see it on Family Guy you see how absurd it really is. There was a time that a lot of people thought this was real. There was a time a lot of people thought this was progress. Which makes one wonder: what if right now, what we have today isn't good enough, and will one day look just as embarrassingly cringe? It feels unnecessary to assume hate if ignorance would seem to explain it completely. Oh real people still get hurt by the cringe even if it comes out of ignorance more than hate.

For those of you who are saying “she still had a choice to do this performance” there are a few things you should know: Back then when an actor signed a contract(especially a child actor), the studios had control over everything on them including their bodies(many actresses were even forced to get abortions; Judy garland is thought to be one of them). In addition to this, Judy had an abusive stage mom(and her father had been dead for a year at this point). If she refused to perform this she could’ve 1. Been beaten by her abusive mother 2. Fired from MGM leaving her entire family without money, and her mother would’ve definitely abused her 3. Be beaten by her mother AND drugged into submission. For all we know she could’ve been heavily drugged here. She was forced to take drugs and alcohol throughout her entire career to get her to perform the way the producers wanted her to. Edit: I'm disgusted by the amount of people responding to this comment who are saying this blackface doesn't matter anymore because there are no more slaves. Educate yourself on how these mindsets become systematically ingrained into our society and laws; leaving the after-effects to generations to come. I am also discouraged by the people who assume only the worst,, especially without doing their research. Whether you would like to believe it or not, I 100% understand where you are coming from, and where your mindset is. But if you have no experience being indoctrinated by any ideology or bigotry, I highly suggest you educate yourself. You cannot hold people accountable for things they did when they were children, yet alone things they did before they had un-indoctrinated themselves.

I admire the way you expressed this. "Grotesque" is an excellent word choice. This clip broke my heart--such heaven in her voice and such an ugly hell behind it as a performance I noticed that her performance here lacked the over-the-top enthusiasm so typical of blackface actors during "happy"/upbeat songs. I don't know enough about Garland to know if she typically brought that underlying distance/melancholy to her roles, but here it adds an extra layer of unease. Everything about this clip feels like a metaphor and a juxtaposition--on one end social horror, on the other personal tragedy. Heartbreak in 2 minutes.

For people who are saying Judy is racist, enjoyed this, or was fine with this since it was normal in this time period need to stop. Judy was *forced* into doing these things under the rigid contract of the studio and her own mother, which is incredibly difficult to resist especially for child actors and in a time period where children had very little autonomy. And just because blackface was common and normalized didn't mean people were okay with it everywhere. Slavery was common and there were people who opposed it even when it was happening, normalization ≠ agreement. And Judy was a notorious Civil Rights activist, she was forced into a racist role. And you can see in her expression she didn't like it, people may think she did but she was an actress, she had to act like she did for the studio but you can tell she didn't if you bother to actually look, such as the lifelessness in her eyes

Many people may not realize that, in America's past, African-Americans were not allowed in films (or on radio stations). There were no black actors or actresses (or black professional athletes). Our country had segregation which included having restrooms for "Whites Only". So, the only way to have a film with a black character was for a white performer to do the role in blackface. Judy Garland may not have even seen this as distatsteful as we do today. She was doing her job as an actress. I am not saying this was right, just reminding people to take it easy on Judy Garland.

And are not things supposed to be better under a government I would say it very scary at the times we live in. When you listion to people who have been traumatized by governments who declared war,stripped people of their culture threw them into towns and cities and make us function this ridiculous way of life ,who is to blame?,people are realising and moving back into nature away from governments who in my opinion have caused all the damage. No one is happy well those under a government ,and they force their unjust way of life on us. When I heard that once governments brought over Africans into America they had a water fountain that said blacks and whotes WHATON EARTH,blacks was not allowed to drink from the white man's fountain, how disgraceful and quite shocking to me ,we are all God's creatures . I feel for everyone over the centuries for how badly they have been treated as they are all God's creatures equal whether a human,a fly a forest a stream even a speck of dust as this was all created all has a use and all must be respected. Alot of people are forced to do what they don't want to do and we give them backlash ,that is making a mockery of Judy and insulting her as a human being. No one would want to be part of that and I bet even she had nightmares I feel sick watching it ,it is the first and last time for me. There is so much we do against our will,or we are repressed ,not even being able to speak our minds without being made to believe even our thoughts are wrong. I'm fed up with the world and it has got to the stage rich or poor this is now a very depressing planet to live on ,God created a happy human,a beautiful planet,enough for every man's need not his greed. I know all this for fact I'm a shaman and see how we functioned before a rule ,and I will not be repressed I will say it how it is I will not be silenced like everyone else ,I would be willing to be thrown in jail for speaking up ,about time everyone said enough is enough, many can see we just spiraling downwards no way out ,you all need to make your lives better ,you don't need to be ruled and keep putting up with the madness around you ,do you not see where it is leading,those gone back into nature ate so happy ,spiritually fulfilled ,stress free ,different people who are no longer lost.

Judy Garland was a vapid bimbo, and that's ok. People need to stop trying to bend her into their own ideas of reality and social conscience.
@magicconches.10 күн бұрын
Judy didn’t wanted to do this. She was abused by MGM and her mother who put her in multiple substances and forced her to starve herself during the filming of “The Wizard of Oz” (which is another event itself everyone including the Toto dog were injured). Judy was used and abused by the industry until she died by an overdose from the drugs she got addicted to while she was forced to take during/even before the filming of “The Wizard of Oz”.
@LL-bl8hd Жыл бұрын
Remember that Judy had no choice in what roles she took. She was a child when this was filmed and in those days actors were under contract with a single studio. She did whatever they told her or she would have never worked in Hollywood again.

Thank god there are so many recordings available to us of Judy Garland's talent, so that we don't have to depend on this nastiness to enjoy it. This clip can be our way into learning about and improving upon what America was like at that time. So much other Garland media is here for us so that we can just swoon over a person (a child!) having her level of talent.

this reminds me of when i was 7 and jimmy carter was president. we lived in a duplex that shared a porch with the unit next door. they had a little girl not yet 18 months old. they taught her that her diaper was a pocketbook and they would sneak up behind her and put wet leaves down the front of her diaper and tell her jimmy carter did it. she would scream STOP JIMMY CARTER and rip her diaper off then they would laugh hysterically. they did it until she was exhausted from screaming. then they taught her to cuss. they told her that as long as she danced jimmy carter would not come and get her. she danced on that front porch all the time. they told her if she would cuss jimmy carter from the porch he would not come and get her. she spent so much time holding onto the bars of the porch railing like she was in jail and cussing jimmy carter as loudly as she could. the neighbors all hated her. the year they told her jimmy carter not santa was bringing the presents she went to bed crying and saying she did not want anything. it got to where if you just said his name she would start screaming and run hide in the bushes. it was a long 4 years for her.
