More songs for 'By Your Side' were introduced in January 1998, including "Red Wine Stains", which eventually became "Go Faster", and an early version of "Virtue and Vice". Recording went smoothly as Rich Robinson was the only guitarist involved in the demos as well as the final versions for the album release. Some unused sections from this batch were borrowed for Rich's debut 2004 solo album 'Paper', as well, including the main riffs of what became "Tomorrow Is Here" and "Thrown It All Away".

That song is actually called Sad Brown Eyes, not Red Wine Stains, or at least it morphed into an actual finished song called Sad Brown Eyes with that chorus. And, the original was better than Go Faster, not that it matters. The label had full control of this crappy album from directing song title names to song structures, etc. They struggled here and forced it all. There was actually a finished copy of this album in the fall of 1998, and it was redone to include Go Tell the Congregation and Diamond RIng. Those two songs were not on the original intended finished record. Apparently, someone at Sony felt a weak album with no real chance and a weaker band could have been saved with those two crappy songs, so they pulled it late and added those 2 songs because some bozo at Sony actually thought it would make a difference.

Interesting! "Virtue & Vice" actually became the bulk (musically) of "Then She Said My Name".
