The ghost are able to communicate with Finney because he has a bit of the "gift" like his sister and mother did. That's why one of the ghost says it rang for them all but they couldn't hear it because they didn't have that sixth sense.

“This kid’s more of an adult than his own dad, and that’s really sad. The fact that some kids are more mature than their parents just says a lot.” My dad has driven under the influence several times and one time I called him out on it and he was not happy with me. My mom heard this conversation and told me that someone has to be the adult around here, and it clearly wasn’t me. It’s upsetting how true that statement is.

Gwen and Finn inherited their mother’s psychic abilities, they could basically feel spiritual energies. The basement is very haunted due to the murders that occurred there. Having psychic abilities allowed Finn to communicate with the spirits of the dead boys.

Love your reaction and insights! The actress for Gwen is sooo good! 36:23 My assumption is the grabber had a bad childhood with his own father who locked him down in that same basement, and he's doing the same thing with these kids to feel powerful in order to unhealthily deal with his own trauma. The mask looks demonic to represent his father. So when the mask was ripped off from him, it made him acknowledge that he's the one doing all these shitty things. I assumed this because remember when he called Finny "Johnny" early on? That's probably the grabber's actual name, and he's just repeating what his father had said.

@@lyssygirl7998 AYO THANKS but at the same time, it's kinda worrisome bc there's an implication that he probably sexually assaulted* these boys before he killed them, which begs the question if his own father did that to him as well :'( And if that's the case, then what did his brother do? Was his brother aware this was happening?? Aaaa so many sad questions ;-; * Example of why I thought it was implied so is his overall demeanor to Finny such as that scene where he said "I just want to look at you", stared at him sleeping, and the way he gently pushed Finny's bangs from his forehead once.. brrr lord save these kids

Finney can hear the phone and talk to the ghost is most likely he is psychic just like his sister Gwen. Which they both inherited the ability from their mother. If he didn't have these abilities he wouldn't have been warned about staying down stairs and the first night the door was left unlocked he would have gone up and would have been beat to death like the others.

I was actually SHOCKED at how amazing the kids' acting was. Like, everyone is talking about Gwen but also the expressions of Finney- he barely speaks but his expressions! He was a good foil to his sister. Also both siblings are psychic, tho Finn's aren't as obvious as Gwen's as she has dreams but Finn can actually communicate with the ghosts & the basement is haunted- Bruce tells Finn in the earlier half that Grabber can hear the phone ring but only Finn can speak to them. I think the only reason the Grabber could hear them at the end is either cause He was so close to death or because Finn was channeling them.

Something I really appreciated about this movie was that it doesn't really care to tell you why The Grabber does what he does or who he even is. Cause the story isn't about him. It's about Finn, Gwen, and the kids that were hurt, and how they used what was happening to them. They're the heroes of the story, not The Grabber. Screw him. It's like the opposite of true crime stuff that pays more attention the criminal and/or glorifies the crime(s)~^.^

Gwen's yellow raincoat could be a homage to "It." Or Gwen's raincoat could be yellow because that's the most common color for children's raincoats in the past. Me personally, I love this movie so much. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't that scary but in the end that didn't even matter to me. The acting was phenomenal, the way everything was captured and the few jump scares really sold it, on-top of that, despite the movie not being scary it was super unsettling, there were times when I had to pause and look away. Honestly my favorite movie of 2022.

Finney and Gwen CARRIED!! Their chemistry as siblings was too adorable! It's scary if you have children. It should have been advertised as a psychological thriller or a mystery with supernatural elements, more so than a horror film. But it was better than I expected it to be. I liked some aspects of his mask. When it had a smile it was creepy as heck! Also, the face constantly changed based on what personality was being represented. It get slight Split vibes if you've seen that. I highly recommend it if you have not seen it yet. It's a part of a trilogy for reference. Unbreakable, Split, then Glass. I accidentally saw Split 1st not knowing it was a part of a trilogy. But it was phenomenal!!

Great reaction video. This film was the best horror, suspense film I have seen in quite some time. I like how they didn't give Ethan Hawke's character The Grabber any backstory so you wonder why he did what he did. I imagine he was abused by his father in the same basement and his name was Johnny because he called Finny "Johnny" when he first put Finny in the basement. The young actors in this brilliant film were the standouts. Mason Thames who plays Finney reminds of of a combination of a young Tom Holland, a young Heath Ledger and a young River Phoenix. Thames has the good looks, stoic charm and acting skills that will take him places in the future. Madeleine Mcgraw who plays Gwen reminds me of a young Angelina Jolie with her combination of grace, strength and dramatic acting skills that will take her places in the future. I wish them both much happiness and success.

A great reaction to a fantastic horror film. My favourite thus far. In reference to your question about the supernatural elements. The phone itself acts a vessel of those in the afterlife can communicate with the living. What makes this dynamic interesting is that (as mentioned by the Father previously) is that Finny and Gwen's Mother could see and also hear those in the afterlife/spirit world. However her children only possess one of these abilities that is shared uniquely to them. Gwen possesses her Mother's ability to see those that others cannot (as seen through her visions during her "dreams") but cannot hear, while Finny can only hear those that others cannot (through the black phone) but not physically or spiritually see them. This also explains why Finny couldn't see the other kids in the basement despite them being spiritually present. However there is a minor inconsistency with this, as Finny was able to see the child with the slit throat floating and pointing. I hope this answers your question in regards to the supernatural elements to the movie. I look forward to your Halloween Ends reaction when it inevitably releases.

When she was a girl scout back in the late 1950's early 1960's, she was riding home from a troop meeting and some men pulled up in a truck or van I can't remember and pulled her best friend in.. she ran off leaving her bike and by the time they called the police 30 minutes had passed and her best friend was never found. Oh and kidnappings/abductions weremore prominent back then. It's a mix of the culture and lack of technology that made it easier to get away with. Serial killers were popping up left and right

Etan patz was abducted and murdered in 1979 he was the kid that started the missing children on the milk carton he was taken outside a corner store in NY while on the way to school Google etan ( not ethan coincidentally) etan patz also in 1981 Adam Walsh 6 years old was abducted and murdered . his father is the creator and host of America's most wanted they found the boys decapitated head off a highway in florida there was also the atlanta child murders about 30 boys from 1969 to 1981 were kidnapped and murdered although the man arrested was never charged ....yet.... the murders stopped once he was arrested. They're doing DNA testing now since the technology wasn't available then. It was a scary time then I was about 16 years old and remember I wasn't allowed to go anywhere alone

i know i already commented on this video, but i’m here to do it again!! ethan hawke is such a talented actor, and he works so well with scott derrickson (the director)! that being said, if you haven’t already seen it, i *ABSOLUTELY* recommend reacting to (or just watching) ‘sinister’, which was made in 2011. ethan hawke also stars in ‘sinister’, and he does an amazing job all throughout the movie. it is hands down the best horror movie i have ever seen (so far), and it’s really unlike any other horror movie i’ve ever seen. from the music and sound design to the chemistry between the actors, ‘sinister’ is 100% worth checking out, if not for ethan hawke’s acting, then for scott derrickson’s ability to make a terrifying movie. (fun little factoid: the guy who plays max in this movie also plays an officer in ‘sinister’.)

Year to late but still wanna put in my opinion. Basically I'd like to say that the masks sort of represented a side to the Grabber. The smiling one was the charismatic and charming guy. This refers to real serial killers. They are often perceived as charismatic and charming, most serial killers like John Wayne Gacy or Ted Bundy weren't seen as monsters. The other side of the mask with the frown was the murderous and dark side to the Grabber. Like real serial killers they all had another side to them, that dark and murderous type. When the mask was torn off of the Grabber you can see he becomes physically distraught. It's his true form. He no longer is hiding behind the mask and that moment he is truly himself. The mask and his actions aren't separate now. I'd also like to say in the original short story the mask was actually a clown mask, all the more disturbing in my opinion. Great movie overall, I will say it does fledge out the meaning of the original piece. The original story though had bits that sank in more. Like then the Grabber calls Finney Johnny, it kind of just sits weird in the movie like a nickname but in the story his name was Johnny Finney. He knew his name long before he told him. You also got to get inside Finn's head and know what he was thinking. Great movie and story. 10/10.
