After filming the Harrier video at Paul D. Rushing Park, I was a little exhausted from having to do such extraneous camera work. I wanted to go for something a little easier so I remembered how black vultures were almost domesticated at another park. With that footage, I was able to make this video all about the black vulture. This year i have had 2 black vultures come to me for food. It was the strangest thing. They see me feed the crows and other birds and one night one flew to a tree near me and i went and got some meat for it and dropped it and stepped back a few feet. Little fellow flew right over to where i was and started chowing down. He was really hungry, Then a second one showed up. 4 times they have come to me asking for food now. I was completely blown away by this, I got on the ground with them the last time and they were no more than 2 feet from me, One of them followed me when i walked off. The turkey vultures are scared and fly off but boy not these black vultures. They havent come back now for quite awhile, but that was a beautiful experience !

@@KatiTheButcher Wow Frankie I’m really surprised because they are considered a social bird that gets along with humans. Please don’t let it give you a bad taste about the bird that’s not something that happens often. Perhaps there were young nearby! And just so you know Frankie it’s illegal to shoot these birds if caught you’ll get fined and potential jail sentence, they are a protected species. And you just put in writing that you killed one

@@sct3339 I haven't found anything that says they are a protected species? They are very abundant here, I know Turkey vultures are federally protected. Like I said I wish I would have known more about them before I decided to shoot it, it just scared me really bad. I knew when I looked into its eyes something was not right, maybe it had the bird flu? As far as I could tell it was by itself. I hope it never happens again. Btw, I had literally went outside for 5 minutes to get a cucumber out of my garden, when I turned around to get back into my house there it was blocking my path. I even tried to go around it and it followed me and attacked me twice. I even threw my cucumber at it and kicked it and it still came after me trying to peck at my legs.

If I had decided to shoot a bird any time I've been startled by one swooping down & attacking me &/or my dog,then I prob.wouldn't have any blue jays,cardinals,& a few less robins(usually happens most during the spring-summer when they have nests in the trees all around my house). They are also the main ones in this area w/the prettiest plumage & that still stick around when it's cold & others leave.I would rather have them around to look at so I just shrug it off wherever they are being a little aggressive...I'm a bit worried about larger birds over here tho. I just had the biggest red tailed hawk I've ever seen, swoop down like a ft.above my head & land on the 6or7ft.tall shrubs (a few yd./maybe about 20ft).in front & slightly over to the side of me & my dog yesterday. I happened to have my little Chiweenie dog on his leash just a couple ft.in front of me,so I'm afraid it did that cuz it was targeting him & maybe my dog was too close to me or it saw the leash & decided not to try to pounce on him at the last sec..Its prob.Illegal to shoot/kill them as well(& I know that it's just in their nature to hunt little furry critters they see moving around below them from the sky,& killing something that can't help it's instincts to do that,doesn't seem right to some ppl.),but if it had hurt or killed my lil baby Cooper,I doubt that I would've been able to stop myself from trying to retaliate..

Oh yeah,& 2day I saw what I'm pretty sure was 1 of these big guys sitting in 1 of the trees growing in a line to the side of my driveway which is above & along the bank on 1side of a big creek that runs btwn.my property & our neighbors..A few more of them were circling in the sky way above the trees,so I wouldn't be surprised if the hawk(s) or coyotes(2 main preds.over here)killed something at the creek & any leftover scraps/carcass could be what had attracted them..They're huge,but I think the turkey vultures I see more commonly along the nearby highway,might be a bit bigger!?

We have a flock (3-4) who’ve made our back yard their home and I’ve learned so much about them from observing them. -They like tearing rubber off of my daughter’s new black truck, so we had to cover it to protect it. -They frequently make a snorting noise that sounds more like a pig. -They’re intimately amused by annoying my 80lb pitbull and know EXACTLY where the boundary of her wireless fence collar is and will sit on the ground just on the boarder and hop around to antagonize her. When she rushes towards them, they only move to outside the boundary, but doesn’t fly away. They also swoop more over the deck just out of her reach to further antagonize her. They’re actually much smarter that I first realized. -They’re diet is basically anything they can find and they’ve figured out there’s always a bowl of food under the awning of my back deck against the house. At night, I put leftovers or cheap dog food out for wildlife and in the early morning, I’ve seen them eat plain cooked pasta, cooked asparagus and dry dog food (whatever is there at the time). -In the heat, they’ll perch on the railing of the deck and sit with their wings spread. I think it’s to help cool themselves, but I’m not certain.

Last month three black vultures followed a turkey vulture to a likely roadkill victim near our property. We were able to get some video of the black vultures, though they chased off the turkey vulture. Anyway, this video of yours is so much more educational than so much I got from my teachers in school -- and your intro provides some amusing framing. Black Vultures will often cover the tall power line towers behind our property and atop our houses and fence lines here in south of Houston, TX. I can see the power line towers out of the back of my house and once counted 99 vultures in view from my fence to multiple towers in the distance. They like to play with items left out our back yard like beachballs and other toys. There were 2 of them hanging out on our back patio when we brought our baby daughter home from the hospital. It was like they were greeting her. At first I hated these birds and thought they were a nuisance but I've since learned to enjoy watching them be social and quirky. They are definitely dapper looking and completely harmless.

Thank you for making this video. With my new job I work close to black vultures everyday. Here in Eastern NC they have it pretty easy . The hog industry ( which I work for ) and the poultry industry leave plenty of carrion in open boxes . I typically see 6 to 12 in a flock around the boxes . But I go to one that can have over 50 roosting in the trees around the mortality boxes.

I always feed the crows and today this massive black vulture was chilling in my backyard. After I fed them some spoiled meat. I live in Oregon so it was really strange I had never seen a vulture before that didn’t have a red head. It was definitely gray looking and had silver feathers on the tips of its wings. I hope I get to see it again… it was really cool

Interesting,we have these vultures where I'm from along with Turkey vultures and rarely but occasionally get visits from the King vulture. But the black vultures are mostly common. They can be found near landfills, sometimes on beaches especially the ones that have fishing boats and facilities and sometimes near slaughterhouses or meat processing plants but they can be seen everyday high in the sky circling in thermos .

The ones I filmed in this video was just at a local park where people walk around frequently! And they are definitely majestic when flying in the thermals. Locally we call them Corbeau (Corbeaux pural) whether it's the black vulture, Turkey vulture or the king well it's no secret the King is called king Corbeau. Corbeau is a sort of misconception because in French it means Raven I'm from Trinidad and Tobago.

Thank you for posting this. I love these birds. God made them so awesome! We have a few different "wakes" of them around where I live. I know there's male and females in the mix but I always refer to them as "my boys " they will hang out and sleep in the really tall trees across from my house. I appreciate what they do for our environment. If God didn't have them in mind, our world would smell so bad in the summer😄. They are so misunderstood, they do not like to be around humans, here it is illegal to kill any raptors because they are so important to keep the balance in nature. 😊

Loved your video - so informative and well done. I hope your teacher sees it! I do have a question/comment. I live in farm country in Maryland and many local people are reporting seeing black vultures band together and go after and kill livestock here both young and old. Also damage roofs by pecking and tearing off large pieces and take over farmyard and inside barns. Obviously they are becoming a big problem here. Especially since they are protected by law. Help?

Haha thank you, I hope she gests to see it too. That is a really interesting occurrence you just described to me... usually, vultures are strictly scavengers but I heard recently too that certain groups are more aggressive and attacking livestock. I don't know too many tricks on keeping them away peacefully, but the best I can do is say to get some owl and hawk decoys if you can. I'm sorry they are becoming a big problem and I hope it can be fixed soon!

I have had a pair of black vultures just hanging out at my property. One even was playing with my dogs red ball! I have grown attached to them lol! I have a detached abandoned garage with a hole in the roof. I can see where they have been in there due to feathers and excrement. Have you ever heard of a pair just hanging out!? I let my Dad name them Buddy and Honey. Obviously I can't tell which is male or female, but they have been so much fun to watch the past few weeks! ❤️

How do you tell the difference between the male and female? I was told by size? I have had a pair of vultures for five years. Each year they bring the babies to me too. I go through 8 family size packages of chicken a week. I was able to hand feed them but I haven’t bothered in a long time because usually I’m very busy when they come. I love these birds. I have an apartment in my garage and was going to have a contractor make a room for them. Do you think they’d utilize it? I know I could get them in with the chicken but not sure. If they would know to stay. People think I’m nuts but I love them. I ended up with 22 vultures this year. All the turkey vultures came along and I fed them too.

These birds have actually been moving more up north! We see them now sometimes in New York City during the spring and summer. They’ve been known to even snatch small pets, like hawks. So basically, your teacher can suck it. 😂

I was on my way home from work and there is an open field about a quarter of a mile from my house. I saw what I first thought were turkeys in this field. When I got closer I saw it wasn't turkeys, it was buzzards, about 40 of them just sitting there on the ground. Why would they do that? There was nothing dead in the field for them to be feeding on.

I have a varitey of black and turkey vultures That hang out behind my house in a dead tree. I live in southwestern Ohio they come in March and they stay until late October sometimes of mo first arrive it’s usually turkey vultures and later they are invite the black vultures to hang out. Coincidentally I live right next to a cemetery lol. I feel a little sorry for the mourners at a graveside service watching the vultures ride the thermals overhead. Sadly they’re all gone by Halloween

How to get rid of them? These have started hanging around my mothers house near N.C. border. We have small dogs and we are afraid. Seems whatever food source they typically have is now gone bc they only recently appeared.

I don't know much about getting rid of them but I heard you can hang CDs or anything shiny on the ceilings of your patio areas to shine bright lights that can scare them away. I wouldn't worry about your small dogs being in any harm. If anything they are probably scared of them. Their diet only consists of dead animals and they are usually not aggressive. They're feet are also too weak to carry large amount of weights like other raptors. Best wishes and I hope they go away soon

How to get rid of the black vultures in my yard? I've got two but I don't want any more. They are not afraid of me and didn't fly away when I started nagging them about the vulture poop and trying to get the chimney. I thought they were gone and I kinda missed talking to them. They looked at me and didn't fly off. But I don't want more than these two and possibly one or two of their vulture babies. I have a isolated sad life when talking to a vulture is fulfilling. 😂 LoL 😂.

Hey Kim! This is a very interesting situation you are in and I'm sorry those two vultures are becoming a nuisance. Personally, I don't know any tactics to scare away birds except for taking away all food options and scaring them with every opportunity. My dad always has a grackle infestation during this time of the year so he can't put bird feed out and always has to go outside and clap his hands when he sees them. I just looked up some ways to get rid of them humanely and I think your best bet will be to get some owl decoys or kite decoys. You could also hang some CDs somewhere in your backyard so the reflection can scare them off. I hope this was able to help you! @@J_Birds Thank you for your advice and if I keep seeing my black vultures I will try an owl decoy. They have a good personality and maybe I should get out more. LoL 🤣😆 They tried to scare my indoor cats but he got into his pounce mode and the bird was walking quickly sideways to get away from the cat with one eye on my cat. The black vulture pecked on the glass door waking up my cat. He wasn't afraid and went to the door and the bird spread out his wings to try to scare him too. But he wasn't afraid but I read that they do that to get the animal to let it's defenses down and they'll use their sharp bill to hit it in the eyeball and kill and eat it. I thought how horrible. How frequently does that happen? Thank you and I hope they enjoyed my company but I told them more and better road kill by flying up North Carolina.
