I think it was an IBM engineer who once famously stated “garbage in, garbage out” in relation to the accuracy of computers. The BlackWing is a small 2 seat aircraft from Sweden that complies with the European Ultralight classification but not current USA Ultralight regulations. It has a very small and efficient 1.2 litre 4 cylinder gasoline engine with a power output of 140 HP. The base price of the BlackWing does not start at $500,000 to $600,000. It is about half that price brand new. The BlackWing does not hold 120 gallons of fuel, it holds 120 litres of fuel, which is about 30 gallons. The BlackWing does not burn between 15 to 20 gallons of fuel per hour. It burns between 15 and 30 litres, which is between 4 and 8 gallons, of fuel per hour. The cost of fuel is quite modest. It can fly 1,000 nautical miles with just 30 gallons of fuel, at a cost of $150, better than 30 mpg which is less fuel than many automobiles and/or trucks would use to travel the same distance. The BlackWing will travel 1,000 nautical miles in about a quarter of the time an automobile will take. It certainly does not have a top speed of 330 Knots, a speed that World War II fighter aircraft were just nudging, with the Roll Royce Merlin 28 litre engine producing up to 2,000 HP. There are very few non-commercial aircraft that can fly at 330 Knots and they all have gas turbine engines of 700 HP or more and cost about $4 million plus new. The BlackWing can normally cruise at about 160 Knots and touch 200 Knots above 10,000 feet altitude, however, it is not pressurised and, therefore, you would need to bring an oxygen cylinder and mask and there will not be much space for luggage if you carry oxygen.
