From libraries introducing/invented modern form of universities in the 11th century that had the first International body of Scholars in history and certificates that were honored globally. Papal infallibility was not declared until 1871. Throughout most of history, popes and bishops were seen as princes with both spiritual and temporal power and authority. In other words, they were very craven creatures indeed. It is ironic but true that this is how the leaders of the Church were seen when belief was both absolute and mandatory. It was only in the modern age, when Nietzsche declared that God had died (from a lack of belief), that we retroactively imposed upon the popes this picture of saintliness and propriety.

So, I live in the Bible belt. I was told at one church that Catholics are not Christian. That was at a Bible Baptist Church. I was raised Baptist but I was never told that Catholics weren't Christian. You refer to the Catholics as Christians and it made me think of this.
