Sometimes I don’t even care and just grab the dvd if it’s 2 bucks at the thrift store, I just love movies the quality isn’t bothering me as much as it used to , I used to really care but now I’m just like whatever lol

When you actually watch DVDs, you release the he difference isn’t that noticeable I lea you are looking for it hahaha I’m the same I don’t care too much, I still watch vhs, I mostly upgrade cause so much stuff goes out of print faster now it seems

Lately I’ve been adding a few DVD, admittedly they’re mostly cartoons/anime, but my intention is to make used of some of my CRTs including an iMac G3 (slot loading DVD drive). 😃 Some of that stuff is not ever going to get a true HD/4K scan, or the source was digital SD… and sometimes the up-rezed blu-ray version looks worse than the original DVD. Ideally, I look for stuff that was originally SD up-rezed for blu-ray BUT includes the DVD, so I can compare watching the blu-ray on an HD TV, or a DVD on a little CRT… sometimes that magical glowing CRT wind… and a halfway good one still looks pretty sharp with animation. (Or anything really.)

I honestly think 4k is the last stop for home video at least for a very long time. I see the restoration and scanning technology will get better so we may see rereleases of earlier 4ks like we did with Blu-ray and dvd.

There's also this glass ceiling that nobody really talks about when it comes to picture quality and that's the human eye itself. We have a limit of what our eyes can process and the 4K level is almost right there. If we go to 8K movies it might be pointless cause if the human eye can't process to appreciate what it is then we shouldn't keep going. I believe 4K could be the end of the road for media quality.

@nicholaslozano8602 8K can make a difference on a gigantic TV that you’re sitting too close to, heh. That and huge theater screens. Honestly we don’t need 8K. For theaters, just focus on getting a brighter, more vivid image. Idk, I’d like to see an 8K theater screen, maybe it does make a difference. But certainly for home use… please stop at 4K! We just need all the films that still exist to be lovingly preserved in 4K, and I think that should be good.

@@nicholaslozano8602 This is what I've been saying for a while. A picture can be only so clear. So unless your projecting on a screen that's 12 feet or something, 4K better be the last stop for a really long time. Or last stop ever. I would prefer last stop ever.

You're right. The curse is real. I learned after 2023 that waiting out the FOMO is the best thing when trying to collect. I've saved so much money and not really missed out on anything. Also, comedies are coming to 4k finally because they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for upgrades in most other genres. Sadly, they never want to show the comedy genre any love, but I'm happy they're getting love right now.

I upgraded faculty as well, and it came with a 4K digital copy through Apple… I’m not upgrading to the 4K physical because it doesn’t make sense until it’s cheap, great video as always 🙌🏼

Standard blu ray quality can be excellent. If I have a film on standard blu ray, I'll only upgrade it if I really love the film and reviews indicate that the 4K is a significant step up (e.g., I love the first Guardians of the Galaxy, own it on blu ray, but feel no need to upgrade it to the 4K disc, because reviews indicate a minimal uptick in picture quality). I feel the same about boutique releases--I'm not opposed to nice packaging (and I'll pick up a nice release of a film I like *if I don't already own it*), but I won't pick up a release for the packaging. Same with slipcovers. I'm fine with them if I get them, but I'm not driven to seek out a ring of cardboard.

Yea I have zero desire to upgrade all my MCU Blu-ray’s haha I’m fine with Blu-ray, I also have to really love the film to upgrade from Blu-ray to 4k. But I love a lot of movies hahaha

The market is becoming somewhat predictable. If a new movie gets a blu ray only release, there’s a good chance it will get a foreign 4K release or a US 4K six months to a year later. Movies getting new sequels are also likely to get a 4K release, like we saw with Twister and I predict we’ll get Tron/Tron Legacy 4K next year with the new release. Demolition Man was a pleasant surprise though, didn’t see that one coming!

Releases are announced on 4K that I have on Blu-ray. I use that as a thinking time. If I really enjoy the movie, I’m gonna get the 4K especially if it has all the bonus features carried over. If I decide I’m not interested in the 4K release and I just lost interest in the movie. I don’t pick it up. Regardless either way, I always try to get rid of the Blu-ray anymore because it’s not needed anymore, unless there’s some great extras on there they’re not carried over

A year or two ago I decided to buy second copies of one or two dozen movies I already owned on blu-ray and 4K. Some of the second copies I bought on blu-ray have since been released on 4K (Blood Simple) or are scheduled to be released on 4K (Rush). One movie that's on my watchlist is Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving." I wanna watch it shortly before the holiday, which I didn't get a chance to last year. I'm glad I haven't seen it yet (much less bought it yet) because if I liked it I would've gotten the blu-ray that was released this past January. It's now getting a 4K release on October 15.

Yea I just got Riddick on blu ray as I got the other two on 4k. Thought it would be awhile before Arrow did the third movie and then DAYS later, Shout announces it out of left field😂

This is why I stay away from buying Blu-rays now (unless I’m pretty sure a movie isn’t popular enough to get an upgrade) because there’s a high chance there will be an upgrade. I want Abigail but I’m sure it’ll be upgraded, I want Wednesday and Chucky series but I’m 70% sure they’ll have a 4K version at some point. I will upgrade my old Blu-rays if I had them for years. I also look at it as fun, if a person can afford it and if a person likes the movie then I say go for it.

Demolition Man is one of my all time favorite movies, but $60 is too much. It dropped to $45 and even that is a hard sell for me for a single movie. I didn't hear about Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore though, those might be day 1 buys for me. I've probably watched Billy Madison 50 times at least.

I got hit with the 4K curse earlier in the year with UHF. The DAY I received the blu-ray from Amazon, Shout announced the 4K. I was like, "Really?!?" I'm actually planning on getting Demolition Man from Arrow as a belated birthday present to myself as my birthday is in late November and it's coming out on Dec. 10th. Billy Madison & Happy Gilmore are also going to be purchases for me when Kino releases them. Also read from a comment from Kino themselves on Facebook in reply to someone, there are also plans for Uncle Buck and Sneakers to both get 4K's. Sneakers is one of that's a definite purchase.

😂 Lmao, so Chase at AVA keeps telling me how he's waiting to get In The Mouth of Madness on 4K. I picked up the regular Blu-ray for like 10 bucks and I'm more than happy with it. I look at what sales at a good price that's why I now have copies of every kind of physical copy of same of my favorite anime films like Akira and Ghost In the Shell. I don't need everything in 4K from DVD that I have been collecting for over 25 years.

To be fair, Kino announced originally crybaby in late 2021 and it was announced for a 4K so we knew it was coming. Also, it looks like a lot of of these ones coming to 4k the original Blu-ray release you had was a studio release. It was probably cheap so that’s good news.

IMHO 4K is a waste of money. Next they'll release a 16K TV and they'll re-release everything again in that format, so you'll have to buy it all again. There is only so much detail the human eye can process. The upscaling and upgrading to 4K has been it hit or miss on quality. For me Blu-Ray is as far as I will go.

I don’t think every movie should be in 4K, sure the picture is better most of the time but I think they should’ve made 4k’s for certain titles like animated movies, action movies, horror movies any movies that has good visuals and sound effects

No way, 4k is amazing with movies that put any real effort into their visuals, which should be all of them. The Equalizer has nothing magical or fantastical in it, but is one of the most pleasing 4k experiences I have ever had.

I have been holding off on Demolition Man but I got my pre-order in for it. Dante's Peak is another I have been meaning to add but glad I haven't yet. I will get the 4K. Cry Baby is another I don't have but need to get the 4K. American Hustle I had the Blu-ray for quite a long time. I was able to get the 4K steelbook new for $20 and happy with the upgrade. I had the Conan movies for years and glad I upgraded to the 4K. Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison I have had for years as well but will get the 4K. Because so much is coming to 4K I have really slowed down in purchasing Blu-rays anymore.

Somewhere in the 16-minute mark, you said that you liked that they had different art and the original inside. I have gotten a few movies in 4k where the new steel book or slipcover package isn't the original art. Still, I will often come with the original art on the actual 4k casing (excluding steel books), and other people comment on review videos with massive negativity. Makes no sense. Sure, some of the new art isn't great, but for the most part, it's pretty good, and if you don't like it! Still comes with original art. Crazy IK. Change bad.... Why do you think there is such hate towards new art in 4k releases of older movies? Is it deserved? If so, why? Are there enough cases of bad releases regarding new art, or is it simply because it's strictly exclusive to the original artwork?
