@@23bobjr Sorry, but I disagree. Reason #1: Jaws (1975) opened with a record box office weekend, topped $100m in the first 60 days, and passed The Godfather as the highest grossing US film in 78 days; 3 Academy Awards. Jaws held the top spot until Star Wars in 1977. Reason #2: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), most successful film for Columbia Pictures as of that time; 2 Academy Awards. He was quite well known and well respected in 1980. More than enough so to make the appearance awesome and special.

so the story goes when they made this movie, the Chicago Chamber of Commerce had been trying for years to get more films and tv shows made in the city, but the only projects they were getting offers for were gangster movies, which understandably make the city's national image worse. So when The Blues Brothers came along and was *not* a gangster movie, the Chamber of Commerce let them do absolutely anything they wanted. Jump a car over a bridge? Sure. Stage a high-speed pursuit through a shopping mall? Go for it. HAVE THE NATIONAL GUARD SCALE THE SIDE OF THE JOHN HANCOCK BUILDING? Why not?
