I bought a brand new one, a black executive and used it to commute, it was absolutely magical. I got to work without any delays ever and never got wet. The bike did exactly what it was meant to do but the world was not ready for it. People saw it and laughed and when at work it was dubbed " the pope mobile " by my colleagues. I put up with the ridicule for a few years but in the end it took it's toll and I sold it. I carried on cycling to work through the traffic to similar effect and success but regretted getting rid of my C1 every time it was soaking wet weather.

If you try one, it's gonna be terrifying! My father rode bikes for 30 years, and yet, when he tried my C1, he looked like a toddler on a bike without training wheels! Imagine riding your bike but remove the ability of your torso to move around and lean. You have to countersteer lots and lots. Also place a basket of bricks on top of your head. I had never ridden a bike before, and I bought the C1 a couple years ago without even trying it. There aren't any other options available so it's either this thing I loved since I was a child, or nothing. I was scared pale of how uncontrollable and heavy it felt, and I fell over 5 minutes after purchasing it, and again the next time I rode... both times while parking it, lol, it's so heavy and I'm a weakling. It's so unintuitive to steer right to go left, I kept going straight at turns and invading the oncoming lane, man it was an adventure to bring it home. I quickly got used to it, though; my thigh muscles doubled in mass to keep it upright when still. I can't compare it to any kind of two wheeled vehicle as this is the first thing I rode after a bicycle, but I can tell you I love it and I can't wait to ride it around! Offroading and bouncing all over is especially fun!

I still have mine. Basically an excellent solution for getting around in the city. The topcase was huge, you could carry a water crate in it. Without the topcase mounted a codriver was allowed to sit there wearing a helmet. No need to point out how stupid that was looking. Because of the high center of gravity it could become tricky to maneuver it slowly. The big problem selling it was that BMW motorcycle dealers didn't want it because their arrogant customers immediately hated it and BMW car dealers didn't want it because they had no clue, only knew their 4-wheeled vehicles. Also having it serviced at BMW was as expensive as a VW Golf. And that rotex engine had timing chain problems just like todays VWs (lengthening).

A police motorcyclist told me that like all new BMWs, they'll let the customers find the teething problems and boy was he right. They were hot trash and I had nothing but problems. Bought a Honda afterwards for less money and way more reliability. However I did like the level of customisation - effing massive rear box, rear seat, rear rack, heated grips and seat, sun roof (yes, really).
@Colaholiker3 жыл бұрын
One thing that really impeded their sales in Germany was related to our drivers license regulations. Even though you didn't need a crash helmet, it was still considered a motorcycle, requiring a motorcycle license - unless you were old enough to get your car license before 1980. (I don't know the exact date, but licenses issued before around that time included light motorcycles up to 125cc, which would have included the C1.) After that the limit was toned down quite a bit, as when I got mine in 1998, the limit was 50cc and some maximum power that I never cared about since someone of my size on such a small scooter would have looked totally ridiculous. Those 50cc scooters are really popular with younger people here as they don't require a motorcycle license and are quite inexpensive. The C1 didn't fit in there, and usually those who get a motorcycle license want to ride a motorcycle, not a scooter with a roof. So it was really a product for a niche market, and as such I wasn't surprised about the low sales here in Gernany.

I got my first C1 in 2004 for commuting 22 miles each way for work. It was brilliant and the weather protection was better than a traditional motorcycle. Also, in hot weather no need to wear leathers etc. Always wore a crash helmet not simply because of the law but to protect my hearing - really noisy in the cabin. You mention BMW build quality. It was appalling! The black chrome on the front forks was known to be peeling while new in the dealership. I travelled Europe on mine but donated my last one (had three over the years) to the Sammy Miller museum last year as parts are now becoming scarce. I am also now retired so not commuting. It served its purpose well.

I like the brilliant concept of those little Honda 3 wheelers. The engine sits low between the rear wheels, the weight forces the wheels down which gives good traction. The heavy rear is a unit with drivetrain, rear axle and wheels, and doesn't lean at all. The forward parts leans with the driver in it. I saw them every day in Tokyo, they seem to be fun to ride. At a stop the whole thing stays upright and you don't need to put the foot down - genious! Unfortunately it came only with 50cc, wish they'd make them with a 250 or 300cc engine.

At the time, I was working as a motorcycle courier in London and we entered a really wet period. I longed for the weather protection the C1 offered, but couldn't envisage riding it. It was huge, top heavy, and ungainly, At length, I did play with one at BMW Park Lane. However, I almost lost my balance and - but for the athleticism of a watchful sales rep, would've gone over and hit a £50,000 limo which was parked too close. That was that. In the end, the dealer began giving them away free with new cars... Then I saw Benelli's Adiva, and it was love at first sight. Mac Motors of Tooting gave me one to test drive. that was a revelation. I'd never used a twist-n-go before, and it was fun, but it was also just light and easy to use! The Adiva was literally the perfect multidrop delivery bike - nearly. You only find that out by doing the do, 10 hours each day. Especially if it's wet. I dedicated it to rainy days, retaining my Suzuki/Honda 250's for the dry times. Being an Italian machine, I didn't think it would last, but it just kept going, on and on. In light to medium rain, I've ridden all day without overtrousers. It was that good. It was also offered with a stereo as an optional extra, but Mac's let me fit my own without compromising the warranty. Although it wasn't specifically designed with safety in mind, that super-large screen kept perfectly clear by the electric wiper was a huge boon to safety in the wet. I NEVER had need of a visor. The bike quite literally changed my life. After 14 years and 75,000 miles I retired it. Then, last year, whilst bored under lockdown, I hauled it form the back of the garage. I popped in a charged battery, sprayed a little Bradex Easy-Start into the air intake, and after 3 cranks on the starter it was running (on 5 year old petrol). So, 20 years on, after a good service, I'm waiting for a chance to get an MOT...Adiva - the best thing I ever bought.

As a motorcyclist I really liked the BMW C1, I would like to have owned one but felt that the price was quite unreasonable given what could be bought for the same amount from other manufacturers. The rider protection (collision & weather) was particularly impressive but the bike being heavy, underpowered and relatively top heavy weren't exactly strong selling points. I do agree that like the phenomenal Quasar, the C1 was ahead of its time, and a lighter version would be quite interesting.

I saw a few of these and some knockoffs in Paris. Back then I could barely comprehend what advantages these had over a traditional motorcycle like a GS.

I think the best " covered motorcycle" is the Renault Twizy. Its a small electric thing that keeps the weather out a bit, has a small form factor and can be driven with a car licence without a helmet. I always wondered if the Twizy was set to have a more enclosed expensive brother named the Smart ForOne? :)

8:21 - Someone could sneak up behind and steal that and the rider wouldn't know as he can't see it in the mirrors. The Benelli Adiva wasn't 'a bit' cheaper, it was considerably cheaper. But the screen was plastic not glass like the C1's, so if the screen wasn't perfectly clean the wiper would scratch it. I like the bloopers at the end!

Wow, that Lochead Quasar looks like something straight out of Mad Max. A friend of mine had a BMW C1 back in the day, he used it daily.

I had one. Great idea but very top heavy and the engines were too small. Should have been lighter at the top and have had a 250cc motor.

Most motorcycles I've had have been manufactured by Brembo or Nissin. It's a much smaller market than cars. 🙂

@@thomas316 Nissin , another great company! I even have Brembo on my 31 year old 125cc bike and even back then they were considered Top. I visited the factory , which is 50km from where i live and found it fascinating 👍

Imagine having a sail on a bike, crosswinds would be a nightmare. Unless you are low to the ground the wind might pick you up. I lost a golf cart roof with wind gusts. And there is the forgetting to put your feet down but that could be solved with rollers automatically dropping if speed drops below 3mph.

I wondered what became of that. I saw it in the UK in 2000. I moved to the USA in 2001 and never saw it again.

I think it is brilliant. But to be double seater and as that other cabrio version. Absolutely brilliant. Little wider roof and there is it. Perfect vehicle

Was one of the oddest things I've ever ridden...that first time you lean and the whole thing leans with you! :/
