I agree with that sometime dealers and even repair shops try to overcharge for things like air filter changes but then once in a while it is the other way around. I have 2017 Jeep Trailhawk and got lucky when at the shop I brought it to for an oil change offered a special to install either the cabin or engine air filter for just the cost of the filter (~$15.00). Knowing how easy the engine air filter is to install I opted to have them do the cabin filter. I watched the mechanic struggle with having to dismantle half of the dashboard to get at the cabin filter taking almost 1 hour to complete the whole job. I ordered the engine air filter (~$ 10.00) while waiting for this job to be done, received next day and it took about 10 minutes to install… think I made the right choice.

Unfortunately this kind of thing has been way more common since the pandemic. They have to find ways to counter balance the profit loss so they are gonna try and get it out of us. I've been watching Rainman Ray's Repairs for a while and something that I've found interesting is the time estimates for repairs. When he's diagnosed a problem he looks it up in a database and there is a description of the job and a time estimate. From what I understand this is used by insurance companies when deciding if a repair is to be approved or not. It also sets the price that the garage can bill the insurance company for the job. Most of the time this time estimate is way high, sometimes more than four times the time it takes Ray to perform the actual repair. It's quite a difference in cost when the database says a job will take four hours and it can be completed in one or even less. It would be interesting to see what that database says about these service points for that particular car.

They all are scam artists where I live. Outright liars and cons. I had a test of my radiator done here in Las Vegas at the local Ford dealership and then tested the system when I got home - zero traces of work or UV dye. Not even the dust disturbed. They simply charged me a diagnosis fee and did zero work/a visual inspection of it for leaks when running (despite it losing coolant somewhere over time). It's not getting into the exhaust or oil, so it's a pinhole leak somewhere but I can't find it. The other dealer across town later wanted to charge me for 4 O2 sensors - and when I asked them to test the electrical system since it's impossible for 4 fairly new sensors to fail at the exact same millisecond (obvious secondary system fault) they charged me to read the exact same code Auto Zone's scanner told me and didn't actually do any work. Absolute scum. I even handed them the readout from Auto Zone first and asked them to figure out what this actually meant and 7 hours later all they did was scan, charge, and print out the exact same codes. I later found out it was my fuel pump overheating once the temps got above 115F - which caused a fuel starvation problem. The "fix" was to never let it get below 3/4 of a tank in summer and drive at a light throttle in the insane heat.

What I discovered was the BMW tech installed the last cabin filters in the wrong direction. Instead of airflow facing the cabin they were installed facing the firewall. There is an arrow mark embossed at the cabin filter location showing facing inside the cabin away from the firewall. So owners should once in a while do their own simple service because you will find out the quality work BMW tech does to your car and charge you a lot.

I recently paid a bit over 500 € at the BMW dealership in France for a big service on my F46, which included oil change, brake fluid change, oil filter, air filter and cabin air filter change, a light bulb change, a broken headliner light fixture change and a rear wiper change. Yes, I could have done some things myself but I wanted the car to be inspected by the dealership for it's first service under my ownership. And I didn't find it that much expensive. They lended me an I3 for free for the day and the mechanic did a video report on what he did. I got a 30 % discount because my car was over 6 years old. I'll soon have to replace the rear brake pads and it wont be that expensive neither. But my panoramic sunroof is failing (broken cables and fasteners) and they quoted me 3159 € to replace all the pano sunroof frame, including the motor. I also asked how much it would cost to retrofit a tow hitch : 2100 € ! And it's even not the electric folding one from the factory (which only cost 800 € as an option) but a standard tow hitch with a quick removable end. They justify it by saying that the need to change the Body Domain Controller module so that the ESP won't activate inappropriately while towing and to change the shift points of the auto transmission. Whereas at Volvo, they retrofit the same tow hitch for only 800 € and they reprogram the computer modules for free instead of replacing them.

Stupidly, on a Lexus IS250 it's possible to damage the fresh air vent system by replacing the filter. The owner's manual lets you know you have to put it in the correct mode using the A/C controls beforehand. But it's very easy to damage. I never force anything, but I heard something break, then checked the manual. Too late. I thought maybe it was something like this.

Not sure when it started but frivolous recalls are used to get customers into the dealership (maybe see the new models) and generate revenue for the repair center. Marketing scheme. Yep, up until a few years ago, I'd never even heard of them. Mainly because, no car I'd EVER had, had a "cabin" air filter ! But then again, I'm old enough that the old cars I grew up with, and could later afford as 20 to 30-year-old used cars as a young adult, many never even had the OPTION of a heater/demister. And cars that did have, a heater was an optional extra. I remember one car I had fortunately had the option of the heater, but unfortunately it was entirely knackered. On frosty mornings I would run an electric extension lead out the house's door and put a 2kw electric fan heater in the car as soon as I got up, before driving to work. That warmed it up, including the gearstick, steering wheel and heated seats, and even the window glass was thoroughly warmed up defrosted and wouldn't cool down enough to mist up again, before I arrived at work.

BMW Tech here, With all G chassis cars the recirculation needs to be turned on before changing the micro filter. If it’s set to fresh air then the inlet door gets pulled/ pushed out of sync with the mode actuator, causing a large loss of air volume out of the vents.

I work for BMW, in Canada granted, cabin filter change is 0.5hr labour plus parts. Should be well under the 440 you were quoted.. worthy of note, when you change the filter the hvac system has to be running in recirculating mode otherwise you risk jamming the fresh air door on the heater box, potentially necessitating a much more expensive repair.

I worked at a bmw dealer. Not sure of parts cost but labor on that would be like 0.4 hrs. My guess it’s a misquote. We used an electronic repair order system and when we added a recommendation we would select from a menu. Sometimes the labor time associated with that operation was way under or way over. If you didn’t manually correct the time it would apply that pre-assigned time. We would document when a time was wrong and then have the administrator correct it. Just my guess. I wasn’t there. Unless the parts cost went way up I think it’s a mistake that should obviously have been caught.

Well i can't really fully blame dealerships for charging that much over a filter + labor. After all, it's due to people that do not want to figure out how to work on their own cars. Dealerships love to advantage over that and start charging crazy prices.

This is why older BMW sell so well. They are easy to work on and the parts are available. I was quoted $1000 for a transmission flush on my 2006 BMW E65. I ordered the service kit from FCP Euro for $212 and it took me a hour and a half to do the job. When I question the service manager he said " I quoted book" As long as you buy a BMW that older than 2016 you can get a pretty good car. After 2016 BMW's are trash. On the same exact car they quoted me $6000 to replace the ABS computer. I pulled the computer and sent it to California. They repaired it for $175 I put it back in the car and everything worked.

I work at a BMW dealership as a technician. The majority of the cost for the job is the price of the OEM filters, which are charcoal activated filters. Labor for the filters is usually half an hour and, because technicians are paid flat rate, the labor includes the time it takes the technician to find the car and pull it into the shop. Cost varies by dealership and $450 is a high price.

I have worked in the parts departments in a few dealerships in my past, and I can testify to the fact that most of the profit at a dealer comes from service and parts! The money from car sales provides the daily operating capital, but it is particularly tough for some dealerships (especially Toyota!) to make decent profits since their products tend to be more reliable and better built than other vehicles. One of the Toyota/Lexus dealers that I worked at made significantly more money from selling used cars than from selling new cars! Employees could make a much better deal on a new car with dealer incentives, but the dealer did not make deals on used cars!

Went to roadshow bmw in memphis for the airbag recall on my e39 wagon a couple of years ago. While it was there they did a once over and came up with a list of things that needed to be replaced. It did have a small valve cover gasket leak but nothing major. They wanted $700 to replace the valve cover gasket. When I asked them why it was so much technician said it was because my car has a v6 so there's two gaskets. I looked at him and said man, I didn't know my car that that special. He asked what I meant. I said apparently I own the only bmw in history that has a v6. The look on his face was priceless.Needless to say I left there without taking them up on any of their recommended services.

I predict that as we move further into EVs, resulting in dealerships losing a ton of money from petrol/diesel engine servicing and stuff, all of these ancillary charges will massively increase. Already here in Australia the local distributor for BYD EVs are apparently going to force buyers to bring their cars in every 12 months (a warranty condition) and charge around AU$500-600 for a "service". In addition they are putting different warranty periods on all different parts of the car. As a comparison if you buy a Tesla there is no requirement to return the car to a dealer for anything.

You are correct. I've been a contractor for luxury car manufacturers and work on the dealer level on subjects like profitability. 70% of franchise dealer profits (not revenue) come from "backend gross." That is basically F&I (finance and warranty/insurance) and service. Next in order is used cars, then new cars. I've always thought dealer maintenance was a waste because I service my own cars, but the advantage of dealer repairs are the fact that you're guaranteed to drive off with a working or fixed vehicle. Often times the rate may be higher but they only charge book time, which is often much less billed time than an independent shop. Finally, there's a little extra value in resale when the car has been exclusively serviced at the dealer.

Tell that to my local Ford dealer. I had work done on my car and came back 2 months later with the exact same problem and they "recommended" literally the exact same service that was supposed to fix it. They did 4 hours of work on my car and replaced several things and didn't even bother putting ANY of it into their computers. Then when I came back, it was literally the exact same boilerplate recommendation which I fell for.

Im a bmw tech in scotland and my dealership does not charge anywhere near those prices! For example the pollen filters themselves are fairly expensive at about £60 and we charge 10 mins labour for fitting which works out at about £26 as we are a dealer so labour rates are £160 per hour. But that still only makes the whole job £86 or aprox $95 ! Dealers chaging $400+ for the same job are clearly scamming and not following bmw pricing guide for parts or labour !

Oh boy, I never have to worry about anything other than a normal oil change. And when the Lexus dealership told me the oil change was a little expensive like $150... I just looked at them and smiles. In my country some dealerships of some makes, steal parts from customer's cars randomly or charge them for operations they did not perform, or charge them for parts they take of from other customer's cars. Thus they bill 2 customers for a replacement they never performed and made them pay for a new part which was never installed. Profit margin on nothing done but damage is 500% - 700% maybe.
