@samcrac Hey Sam I had the same problem on my salvage i8 it took 3 flushes and the recommended bleeding procedure in the manual. For evry two minutes after the engine starts you have to rev to 3500 rpm for 5 seconds and rest for 10 then repeat that 4 times until you hit a total time of 16 minutes. Now repeat the entire thing exepect at 5500 rpm until ur total time is 18 min. Then at 18 min do it one last time to 5500 rpm then take a test drive in sport mode. After three times of doing this it solved my problem

However, unlike in the low-temperature cooling circuit, the bleeding procedure does not end automatically, but must be independently completed by a Service employee. 1 Evacuate and fill cooling system using vacuum filling device. Remove the vacuum filling device after the filling procedure is completed. 2 When the expansion tank is open, open the bleeder screw for 20 seconds. 3 Close the bleeder screw and expansion tank again. 4 Terminal 15 ON, set IHKA controls to 28 °C / 82 °F at blower speed 1 and "Air conditioning OFF". 5 Press the accelerator pedal for about 20 seconds at full load (engine OFF). 6 Start combustion engine in selector lever position "P" with Automatic Hold brake engaged. 7 Increase engine speed using accelerator pedal 4 times for about 5 to 10 seconds to roughly 3500 rpm, with a 10 second interval between the respective engine speed increases. Repeat procedure every 2 minutes for about 16 to 18 minutes. 8 Increase engine speed using accelerator pedal 4 times for about 5 to 10 seconds to roughly 5500 rpm, with a 10 second interval between the respective engine speed increases. 9 After 20 minutes carry out a test drive in selector lever position "S" and with heating turned on fully. 10 The ventilation is completed as soon as hot air flows continuously from the air outlets. 11 Adapt coolant in the cooled down state to MAX filling level" hope it helps!

Pretty sure these have a coolant switching valve. That, and a special bleed mode for it. I'd suggest checking this valve and seeing if it is stuck or broken. I think you're right on the money with the cold reservior - there was some pressure, but no flow. Also, some modern BMWs have an electric auxillary coolant pump, may be worth checking into that too.

Many years ago, I went through a similar problem with the Mitsubishi Starion. The thermostat kept showing that the car was running extremely hot. After exhausting all possibilities, including water pump, thermostat, and a fan clutch, to no avail, I finally realized that the only indication that the car was about to explode was the gauge, no other steam, or drainage anywhere. Several mechanics and dealerships later, I found one man that told me it could be a blown capacitor on the gauge. Indeed, it was, the car was never overheating, and a $25 replacement part finally took care of the problem.

With your comment on no coolant circulation and eliminating the thermostat as a possible root cause, one possible suspect is that there may be a sand casting core that has broken loose in the engine and blocked one of the coolant passage ways. (The casting core when the engine block/head was manufactured.) Pressurizing the inlet side and the alternate pressurizing the outlet side of the 2 hoses going to the radiator with air might help to confirm this possible diagnosis.

I had a 97 f250 7.3L diesel doing the same thing I never figured it out but from what my uncle told me at the time is a cylinder wall can form a small crack and cause the pressure build up in the cooling system and if you think about it cars don't build up pressure till the thermostat opens put I would definitely be checking out all the connections to make sure nothing is reversed plus check for any blockage by removing the thermostat & connecting a garden hose with pressure then start at the over fill return line and work your way back

You've probably found out how to fix the coolant problem, but I found this just in case....Great vids as usual, keep them coming.👍 Evacuate and fill cooling system using vacuum filling device. 11 Adapt coolant in the cooled down state to MAX filling level.

Most modern cars that type will have a coolant temp sensor on the engine itself and on the radiator to check cooling system efficiency. Make sure to check both sensors
@vicsquad69943 жыл бұрын
Have you tested the actual temp sensor. And have you taken a temp gun to check the temperature of the engine, hoses, and radiator? Also check the engine oil temperature as that will reflect over temperature of the cooling system as well, nice car and deal by the way!!

I’ve seen where the plastic impeller will spin on the shaft of the water pump, but only intermittently. Also, random defective thermostats can not fully open or close, or only work sometimes. Take the thermostat out and run it...

I had a similar problem. There is actually an airbleed screw in one of the coolant lines. Mine had an every so slight leak in it. Air would build up and coolant couldn’t flow past it and engine heat up. All BMW need the coolant system vacuum pulled but air was leaking back in through the bleed screw. This means you have to bleed it prior to vacuum pulling it. The air trapped in it will prevent it from circulating.

man I'm lucky to be in south australia, because we don't need coolant. Just anti corrosive resistant cooling fluid, because cars these days don't overheat, and it doesn't really get to freezing here
@jimsmith99123 жыл бұрын
Hey Sam, your problem could be your sensor in the engine, it could also be the plugs that relay that information at any point along the line from the engine to the computer. When they installed them originally, the people in the car plant may have bent the plugs when installing it as they are under time limits for each stage of constructing the car. You need to check all these lines. This has occurred to an Audi that I know and you know how good they are, so why couldn't it happen to BMW. If you sense that any part you checked along these lines, needs changing, the change it. You never know. Good luck mate. Regards, Jim.

Working on it in the field! A literal shade tree mechanic fixing the i8 when the $150 per hour dealership techs can't (or won't put out the effort to). On a side note, I think you are on the right track. I suspect voids in the cooling system, a stuck thermostat, or pieces of broken water pump blade restricting a coolant passage (happens occasionally on the early water cooled 911 engines with plastic water pump impellers).
@matte84413 жыл бұрын
Some dealership mechanics are lazy and don’t know what they’re doing anyways. I work at a dealership and train most of the newcomers. Literally just two people impressed me out of the dozens that had to shadow me. Then you have the lazy ones who can’t bother to diag properly or dislike certain big jobs which is probably the case for this i8. I worked at a Toyota store and we literally had techs file for vacation if they knew they had to deal with a hybrid powertrain issue or if they had to do the Tacoma frame replacement recall.
@dangerouskoin48743 жыл бұрын
Often if it requires removing the engine, they wont work on it. Since no one was under warranty for this, to hell with that they said. They wouldn't make any money selling it after repairs are done. That's why. Not because they couldn't fix it. They didn't WANT to.

Check the upper and lower radiator hoses if one is cool or barely warm vs the other being hot the tstat is bad. Also take the belt off the water pump and spin it fast. It should have some resistance. If it spins freely fast thr bearing is failing. The bearing doesn't have to make a noise to be bad.

I had a 2002 745 i some years ago.. I removed the thermostat because i had doubts about the correct working of it. Bought a OEM thermostat which is also map controlled ( elektrically pre- opened ) at the dealer. Don't know why, but both ones didn't open. Not by cooking ( i know they are 105 degree thermostats ) or by connecting it to a 12 volt external power supply. After some other additional problems occured, i solved the problem.. by trading it in. Honnest as i am, i did mention the problems btw.
