Yes! I have a yearly argument with my cousin about whether or not Moby Dick is a great novel. He thinks it is. I think it's just a manual to be a nineteenth-century whaler. My professor even brought brownies into class on our first day of class discussion to atone for us having to read Moby Dick.

1. What is the longest amount of time you can comfortably go without picking up a book? Before Corona I would have said probably 2-3 days but now that I'm always home I'd say that I'm basically chain reading and pick up a new book hours after finishing the last one. 2. How many books do you carry on your person (physical or device) at any one time? 1-2 (depends on the bag and the length of time I'm traveling) 3. Do you keep every book you buy/receive or are you happy to pass them on to make space for more? Like you, I used to want to keep everything but I've been trying to de-clutter and that means these books I either didn't like, don't want to reread, or have no interest in attempting to read need to GO. 4. How long would you spend in a bookshop on a standard visit? The only time I have visited bookstores in the last couple of years have been either when I'm on vacation or hanging out with a fellow book enthusiast which means I'm in there at a minimum an hour. (I should note I'm a librarian so that's why I'm not generally at the bookstores these days.) 5. How much time per day do you actually spend reading? Because I'm working from home and a large portion of my day has been devoted to doing Readers' Advisory for my patrons my reading time per day has REALLY increased. I'm reading anywhere from 2-4 hours a day now which is shocking even to me. Before Corona, I would really on read during my commutes (in the morning because I'm tired in the evening) and during my breaks so it was more like 1-2 hours a day. Keep in mind, reading is a huge part of my job though. :-) 6. Where does the task “picking up a book” appear on your daily to-do list? In between meetings, webinars, and creating content like book lists, presentations, etc. 7. How many books do you reckon you own in total (include ebooks)? I've thought about this before and I have no idea how to estimate this. I'd say probably around 400 although I have no way of knowing if I'm overstating this number or extremely understating. I have 3 bookshelves (2 have 4 shelves and 1 has 3) plus a shelf that runs along the top of one wall holding several piles. And then there's the random piles of books all over the place in my apartment so...quite a lot. 8. Approximately how often do you bring up books in conversation? All the time because I have absolutely nothing else to talk about since I've been at home for 5 months on my own with my cat. Oh and I bring up my cat all the time too. 9. What is the biggest book (page count) you have finished reading? I had to check Goodreads for this one to make sure but it's Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke at 1,006 pages. 10. Is there a book you had to get your hands on against all odds (searched bookstore, online digging, stalked author, etc.)? ElfQuest Archives - I had to order them through InterLibrary Loan and I still haven't found affordable copies that I can purchase...and it's been years now. 11. Is there a book you struggled to finish because you refused to DNF? Before I started being kind with myself about dropping books I wasn't enjoying this happened super frequently now...there's one I started weeks ago and haven't finished but have to for work reasons. It's coming out later this year so I don't want to yuck its yum by divulging its title but boy I'm hating it. 12. What are 3 (some) of your main book goals for 2019 or 2020 (if you’ve started planning)? I'm choosing to look at this as 2021 and my only goal is to read more diversely. 13. Have you ever had the privilege of converting someone into a reader (by inspiration or your incessant nagging)? I think I've been a good influence on my mom and my coworkers simply because of tenacity. Once I found out their interest in a certain area like horror or mystery I am relentless with my reading suggestions. And now these 3 women are actually reading! 14. Describe what books mean to you in FIVE words. Learning about stuff and escapism

You should voice audio books - your voice is gentle & soothing but also every word sounds important. Just a thought I've had for a while.lol.

Horay I'm so glad you did this tag! I think it's really interesting how a lack of commute has totally changed reading habits. I didn't realise a the time how instrumental the tube was to how much I read!

Where I grew up, we had stuffed bookshelves on every wall in the house. If I didn’t mostly read ebooks, I’d be in the same situation and then some. Also, this thumbnail is fabulous!

~Questions~ 1. What is the longest amount of time you can comfortably go without picking up a book? Less than a week. 2. How many books do you carry on your person (physical or device) at any one time? One. 3. Do you keep every book you buy/receive or are you happy to pass them on to make space for more? I don't pass many on, but I don't buy that many either. I'm a library user. If I'm too impatient for a book, or I know I want to reread then I'll buy it. 4. How long would you spend in a bookshop on a standard visit? An hour. If I'm killing time or studying there, longer. 5. How much time per day do you actually spend reading? One hour on weekdays. Longer on weekends. 6. Where does the task “picking up a book” appear on your daily to-do list? I try to read a bit every day. 7. How many books do you reckon you own in total (include ebooks)? ~50? Includes textbooks. 8. Approximately how often do you bring up books in conversation? I only bring it up with my SO or other bibliophiles. 9. What is the biggest book (page count) you have finished reading? Lord of the Rings trilogy. 10. Is there a book you had to get your hands on against all odds (searched bookstore, online digging, stalked author, etc.)? Not really. I've always been able to find books through the regular channels. 11. Is there a book you struggled to finish because you refused to DNF? Yes. I know a lot of people liked this, but Heads of the Colored People. In my opinion most of the characters weren't likable. You have to spend a lot of time with the characters in a book, and it's torturous if you don't like them. It was well written, though, and I'm glad that other's enjoyed it. 12. What are 3 (some) of your main book goals for 2019 or 2020 (if you’ve started planning)? Read works from different cultures and countries, read more about the history/politics of the U.S., read more non-fiction, and to dip my toes into romance. 13. Have you ever had the privilege of converting someone into a reader (by inspiration or your incessant nagging)? Hmm. I bought Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People about Race by Renni Eddo-Lodge about race in the UK and it inspired my SO to buy a bunch of other books related to the same topic but about the U.S. (He bought...I get to read. It's a win win. : ) ) 14. Describe what books mean to you in FIVE words. Self-education, empathy, curiosity, makes one more open minded, stimulating, entertaining. That was way more than five.

I also forced myself to finish Moby Dick, because it's never come across the concepts of DNF or reading 2 or more books at once and if I finish that pile of excrement, then I couldn't start the next book. Great video.

Lauren, I've found your channel recently and I'm totally in love with It! I feel terribly sad if I go a day without reading! I usually spend 40 minutes to 1 hour reading a day and I'm totally unable to read more than one book at once 🤪 I agree completely with you about leaving the books you are not enjoying. And maybe my 6 years old son is the one I got into reading, unless he always says he thinks I read too much.
@LaurenWade4 жыл бұрын
Aw thankyou, and welcome! ❤️ I normally can’t read more than one book at once either! The exception seems to be if I have an audiobook on the go. That’s so lovely about your son, readers are leaders! Xx

Gah Moby Dick what a struggle!! The very start was okay when he was trying to get the room in the inn and from then on I just couldn’t understand why I was reading this!!

I have definitely got my partner into reading, he never read before he met me....whereas I am a lifelong reader. He has recently read Animal Farm and now reading Ready Player One which he is loving, then he has 1984 and The Big Sleep to read - all of which I have bought for him. Tend to get him (and my eldest son) ‘modern classics’ - HMV do a great range in their 2 for 6.00 offer lots of classics and sci fi. Funny thou, I have not read any of the books that I have bought for them - not really got the same taste!

Does wanting to live in the British Library, The Bodleian and Blackwell's at Oxford count. At the moment my 1500 books are housed ok. I would rather sell my kidneys than dispose of books. I could then buy a nice illuminated 14th century psalter or Book of Hours from Dr. Jorn Gunther rare books. The Fauquier Hours is awesome.

Ooooooh I just have so many thoughts on it! Was very very into it for about 3/4 and then right at the end got so angry with it that I felt cheated for liking the rest of the book. Since then, I’ve just got more annoyed with it as time goes on 🤣 sorry I know that doesn’t explain much without giving all of the plot away but ultimately I felt like she’d manipulated me and wasted my time!
