The Book of Unsaid Things (Bookbinding part 3) - Making the cover and casing in

This is the last part of a bookmaking series. In this video, I demonstrate how I make the cover and finish the book.
Materials I use:
- Regular 70 gsm office paper to join the cover boards
- Calico cotton fabric
- Acrylic paint
- Fabric medium
- Slow drying medium for acrylic paint
- Embroidery and wool threads for the embroidery
- Tracing paper/baking paper to line the fabric
- Double-sided iron-on adhesive interfacing fabric to glue the fabric and the paper.

Alternatives that you can use is Heatnbond, or you can also use PVA glue or handmade starch glue
- Alphabet stamps and acrylic paint

Beautiful cover and workmanship! Everything so neat and precise. I just started making books and I can tell you each one has it's own set of problems lol! Can you explain how you got the measurements for the covers?

Thank you so much! The way I got the measurement s for the covers is I measured it according to the text block. So I added 2mm to 3mm more than the size of the text block on the upper, bottom and sides. I hope this is a good explanation, have fun with your projects!

Thank you so much! What I use here is regular rubber alphabet stamps, and I bought it online. Unfortunately, since I bought it a long time ago, I don't have any links. This is a beautiful thinks of a book binder,i like a lot, she explained simply. But if the side (blue)paper tear will complaint the board . You should glue the centre portion. Just my opinion 😊

Hi, thank you for your comment! I think what you mean by the centre portion is the spine? If it is, the reason why I don't glue the spine is it will make the book hard to open since we need the spine area to be flexible. I hope this helps :)

Thank you so much! Yes, it is thicker fabric. It's calico fabric, but if you need one that is slightly thicker you can go for canvas calico fabric :)

I love your videos! Can I ask what materials you used to build up the cover? How thick is the cardboard, and is that regular paper which connects the cardboard? Also, what kind of material glues the linen to the other layer (is the other layer like a photo paper?) Thanks!

Thank you so much! The cardboard is 2mm thick, and yes it's a regular printer paper that connects the cardboards! The glue is a fabric interfacing but it has double sided adhesive, so when you iron it, it sticks to both sides (be careful when ironing it!) It's similar to heat n' bond. And the other layer is baking paper (you can use any other material like parchment paper or japanese rice paper). I hope this helps! If the glue was applied to the spine, the book wouldn't be able to open properly and would lose some flexibility. Hope this answers your question :)
