My mother (and stepdad by proxy) huge house, horses, new car each year, twice+ yearly big trips etc. Only to sit in front of the TV having her children maintain it all whilst they grew to 500lbs of misery. Kids move out, can't maintain the house, horses, etc. To save face they moved abroad (cheaper, smaller but 'exotic'. And still big tbh but maintainable and labour there is cheap.) Still growing more miserable by the day. How she got the money? Married a rich guy and he passed away, left all money to his children, that she neglected which in my case turned into over a decade of surgeries and rehabilitation / being bed-bound. We could fight, now we're adults, to get full rights over the money that's technically already ours by how my father's will works. But I couldn't... how miserable would she be without the money, what can she still do to live without it? Luckily my brother agrees. The money and the ease of it have numbed her to everything, her body aches too much from overeating and doing nothing to enjoy activities. They buy everything they even think they want as soon as they think of it. What can you even do to make people like that happy? It kills me seeing them so unhappy. :(

The point about spending money to impress peers is so true. I have been working from home since March 2020 and I have spent way less money on clothes than I usually would. It's as much to do with no feeling that I have to 'dress up' for work and wear something different every day as it is to do with not being influenced by what my colleagues are wearing. Just seeing heads on screen certainly helps with shoe envy!

The idea of money is bought with time was really well illustrated by the film "In Time", where people get paid (and pay for things) with time credits. (hit zero and you're dead) It really does change how you think of what you buy. I'd like to add, that your equation for determining hours worked for an iPad, doesn't account that the money is post tax. If the tax rate is 40%, you need to calculate the time based on 60% of your salary. I appreciate that you may have trying to keep the math simple. I find it helps if I think of an item at twice the listed price and ask myself if I still want it.

I think age is a factor in that “enough” point. Assuming I don’t live beyond 100, I’m in the latter half of my life and you get to a place (at least I have) where you realize life was better before all the stuff and complexity it brings. It’s really past the point of enough - you actually re-define what is enough and want to reverse course.

I walked away from a job that was draining me to fulfill living. The downside is now I'm homeless and trying to find ways to make money for basic needs. So how does one change a mindset when they are on survival mode most of the time. Sure one could say get a "real job" but wouldn't I be back to where I started or have I never left? I want financial freedom but honestly what I want is not to stress about the things I need. Comfort has always been by end goal. Shiny has never been my thing but exhaling has. I work gig jobs more than my passion because basic necessity is there.

I've not read the book, but what I'm missing here the fact that many people do not reach the 'enough' stage. Median household income in USA is around $61,937 not mentioning less developed countries like mine. Also, nothing about kinds, and the fact that usually, people work hard to put together enough money to secure their education. When I think about it, the fact that we work over 40 hours a week to earn a living, perepare, commute to work, and then decompress shows that we still mostly work to survive, don't we? Of course that we can think about the stuff we buy, it's good not only for our wallet, but also for the environment, but many people work long hours just to provide their family with bare essentials and hopefully set aside some for college and a rainy day fund.

Your money or your life- vicki robin 1.Before it was earning a living Nowit is earning a dying. 2.what is enough? At a certain point more money doesnt lead to more happiness and that enough is around 75 USD/year. 3.money=life energy Life energy= time plus energy When your buying something see the cost in terms of life energy. One thing that is worth life energy is investing in ourselves. 4.three key wuestions about life energy 1)did i receive fulfillment and satisfaction and value in proportion to the life energy spent. 2)is this expenditure of life energy in alignment with my values and life purpose. 3.) How might this expenditure change if i didnt have to work for money.

Work, life and money are gifts from the one and only God! Work is a task of co creation, just as it always has been from Adam being given the take of naming the animals God created. The only pleasure you will ever derive from work and the money it brings, is having faith in God that you are fulfilling your purpose set by Him. Anything else will lead you to disappointment, more work=more money (not true), and a life striving for meaningless and impossible expectations. Make all work a commitment to faith!

I once worked as a supply teacher. The pay was average but it was done by day, and sometimes it was fun but most of the time it felt like a direct swap of time for money. I saved SO much money in that time because I was just so aware of what the price of something really meant - e.g. a takeaway on average was the equivalent of an hour of dealing with kids. Would I deal with kids for another hour in order to have a takeaway? Nope.

A key thing about the relationship with money is our relationship to brands. Far too many people throw away their money on expensive products that have essentially become commodities, where the equivalent can be had for a fraction of the cost. Take Ali's example of the $800 iPad: you can watch your Netflix and Ali's videos on a $180 tablet that still has HD and most of the latest tech. That $180 tablet represents barely more than 2 days of work at $10/hr. Same goes for the $200 phone as opposed to the latest $1000 iPhone or Galaxy that you see in TV spots. No, you're not buying second-rate: Consumer Reports puts out reams of data on high-quality phones, laptops, fridges, etc that can be had for many hundreds less than the name brands. Sure, you're still working for these things, but you do need stuff. And getting what you need for vastly less money means that your money goes much further. So it starts to work for you more than the other way around.

Money is not everything but it enables a lot of things and the more you have the more you can do. However, that doesn't mean that you need to do everything you can just because you can. As a 22 year old student, I'd say I have a decent amount of money, ebough that I don't have to worry about how I spend it. Still, I think before I buy stuff and only when I see a purpose and I think it is worht it I spend my money on things. The rest of my money goes into savings and investments regarding retirement some day. Don't spend money just because you have it. Think if you see a purpose in a potential purchase. I'm not against eating in a restaurant or going to a party or things like that. Just be conscious about how and what you are spending money on.

something I have always found wrong is counting the dollars you earn as is and comparing it against a possession like in 4:00 . Here he takes 10 dollars per hr and counts 10 dollars*80 to make 800 dollars. then equates the 800 dollars item to 80 hrs of work or 2 weeks of life. This is so very wrong because you cant exist for 2 weeks at zero cost. this cant be accepted even as an approximation because it is a huge error, not a minor one. what should be counted is not what you earn, but what you have left after the bare necessities are met (like food, minimum socializing, normal clothes, basic accomodation, tax etc). so after earning 800, if he spends or need to spend 50% of it to "exist inorder to be able to do that 2 weeks of work", then the real cost is 4 weeks of work instead of 2. Only after 4 weeks, he would have 800 left to blow. Thats a huge difference. Especially so when we are talking about more expensive stuff like a holiday. if a eruro holiday costs 10000 dollars and you manage to save 2000 dollars every month after "existing", that means you are blowing (invalidating) 5 months of your life in exchange for it!

Thank you Ali I always get at least one key takeaway from your videos (I also liked the term neccessaties and NICEessaties) I want you or other views to give some deeper examples of purchases written off as 'work expenses" you gave the examples of a watch/suit however I could see these as 'self investments' to help you manifest who you see your future identity as. I'd love to hear more insights on this the example I have in my mind is a new car - it enables you to commute farther for work and more reliably but also ties into your life values if trravel/road trips are important to you
